Mac os launchpad icons

Question: Q: How to remove icons from Launchpad that do not have «X»

Pretty straight forward question,

If there is no «X», how do I remove the Icon without removing the application?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 4.3.3

Ok, aside from removing the Program from the Applications Folder. Is there any other way to remove the icon’s from the Launchpad?

Those first five icon’s are inside a folder that also is inside the APplications Folder. They are the one’s I want to remove from the Launchpad.

Finder > Applications. Drag the application OUT of the Applications folder, and it should not appear in Launchpad.

(By the way, I though the X would uninstall the app. )

The «X» is only for Apps bought from the MAS. Using it will delete the App from LaunchPad and the Applications folder.

The Lauchpad has icons for all the Apps, including any alias’s for same, in your Applications folder and its subfolders.

This is a tip for people who use Steam, the game manager and online store..

Steam stores application shortcuts in the Users/ /Applications folder.

If you delete a game from within Steam, it will NOT remove the shortcut from the Users/ /Applications folder.

You will have to manually remove it (until Steam/Valve can get Steam working properly with Lion, that is).

Always keep in mind that Macintosh HD/Applications is NOT the only Applications folder that is displayed in LaunchPad. Your User folder’s Applications folder is also represented.

This was perfect! Worked great, and I’ve been looking how to fix this for a while. Installed XCode leaves a «Developer» folder in Launchpad that I don’t want, I just wanted the XCode icon. This app worked perfectly, thanks! (Why this option isn’t built in to Lion I will never understand.)

Here’s an easy solution I found that worked for me. Found it posted on MacRumors:

Here’s how to do it:

1. Put both (duplicate) icons side by side. You don’t have to do this, but it makes it easier to see.
2. Press and hold the Option key. The icons will wiggle.
3. Click on one of the two icons.

One of two things will happen
A. The app will open (if this happens, close the app and try the other icon)
B. You will see a transparent Question Mark (?) on the icon

4. If you see the Question Mark, release the Option key.
5. Press and hold Option again. You’ll see a small X at the top left corner of the icon.
6. Click that X and the icon is gone!!

You can clean your LaunchPad by doing these steps:

1. go to user/library/application support/dock

2. trash the .db file

3. restart (a new .db file will be created automatically)

It removes all icon of the apps that are already uninstalled including all of your duplicated/alias icons (appstore and non-appstore apps).

No. That is what LaunchPad was designed to do, show all of your applications.

You can put them in a LaunchPad folder and drag them to the last page.

Or, if the applications work properly from outside the Applications folder, just move them out.

Jul 26, 2011 9:05 AM

There doesn’t seem to be a way that still works to remove them. However, you can take all the junk and collect it into folders and then ignore the folders full of the junk.

Jul 26, 2011 9:07 AM

It was designed to be like the iOS interface. When you delete an application from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, it’s icon disappears from the iOS screen. LaunchPad follows that model.

Jul 26, 2011 9:10 AM

If follows that model ONLY for apps purchased from the Mac App Store. Apps installed the traditional way are not deleted, nor can their icons be deleted except by actually deleting the app by hand.

Jul 26, 2011 9:15 AM

You’re missing the point of the model. The «X» thing doesn’t really matter. They’re trying a model that anything in the applications folder will be replicated in LaunchPad, whether it was bought on the MAS or not.

If you delete the application from your Mac, it’s not in Launchpad, just the same as if the App is deleted from your iPhone.

Imagine how much howling there would have been if Apple had applied the «X» option to all of your installed apps, and people started deleting the icons from LaunchPad only to discover later that they were actually gone.

Jul 26, 2011 9:26 AM

I think you are getting a little carried away with this. I can see the point of having the icon’s there for the Applications in your folder, However. just like my iPhone and iTouch, I can REMOVE The application from them and still have it available on my MAC if I chose to use it again.

It’s a pretty simple request that I have, and please keep in mind that I’m asking for the «Icon» to be removed not the application.

I don’t want this thread to turn into a debate of any kind, nor rambling’s. If it can’t be done, fine. I’ll just put in a ticket for an update or something.

Jul 26, 2011 9:51 AM

TUAW has a «nuclear» option, that deletes all of the icons out of Launchpad. You can then «start over» and drag the application icons that you want to show on to the Launchpad icon on the doc.

Jul 26, 2011 10:47 AM

You can clean your LaunchPad by doing these steps:

I looked up that Launchpad Cleaner program at the link above, and it seems pretty cool. I also came across and ultimately decided to go with the other one talked about in this discussion a FREE shareware program called Launchpad Controller. It’s a pretty cool tiny app that adds itself to the «System Preferences» panel, and it basically adds a «Preferences page for Launchpad» to your system. Simply, it lets you turn on/off icons in «Launchpad» as you like, and does not affect any of the other functions of Launchpad.

It’s actually a BETTER fix than if Launchpad was working correctly for me anyhow. As it turns out, when one checks the «x» on the icons (when they are jiggling) they are also deleting the program from their

applications folder (dumb huh) [Like what if someone had checked the «x» on an uninstall app? LAME].

So, here is the link to the website (it’s in Danish I think, you can google translate it) to learn more about it, but it was a great solution to my problem.

How to Change Launchpad Icon Grid Layout in Mac OS X

Launchpad is the quick application launcher available from the Mac OS X Dock and a keystroke that looks quite a bit like the Homescreen of iOS. By default, the Launchpad app grid usually displays icons in 7 rows and 5 columns of apps, but with a little adjustment from the command line of OS X you can switch and customize the Launchpad icon grid to any number of apps you’d like to see on the Mac.

This uses the command line and defaults strings to customize the Launchpad grid layout, if you’re not comfortable with Terminal you’re probably better off leaving this alone and enjoying the default Launchpad app icon grid. We’ll combine the commands into a single syntax string for ease of use first, but you can break them apart as we show you a bit further below.

How to Adjust the Icon Grid Count of Launchpad in Mac OS X

  1. Open the Terminal found in /Applications/Utilities/ and enter the following command syntax, replacing the X numbers for the appropriate columns and grid icon counts

defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-columns -int X;defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-rows -int X;defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool TRUE;killall Dock

For example, to set the Launchpad grid to 3×5 you’d use the following syntax:
defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-columns -int 5;defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-rows -int 3;defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool TRUE;killall Dock

  • Hit Return and wait for the Dock and Launchpad to refresh
  • Open Launchpad as usual to see the layout change
  • The settings change is immediate after the Dock refreshes:

You can also cram many icons onto screen with this if desired:

If you want to return to the default setting, just change the column and row counts back to what yours was originally. The default on my MacBook Pro Retina display is a 5 x 7 grid, but yours may be different depending on screen size and screen resolution.

    defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-columns -int 7;defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-rows -int 5;defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool TRUE;killall Dock

The commands for customizing the Launchpad layout can also be split apart if desired like so:

Set the Launchpad Column Icon Count

    defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-columns -int 3

Set the Launchpad Row App Icon Count

    defaults write com.apple.dock springboard-rows -int 4

    Reset Launchpad

    defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool TRUE;

    Relaunch the Dock with killall

You can also choose to just set a custom row or just a custom column count, but you must reset and refresh the Launchpad, and finally killall Dock to relaunch the Dock in Mac OS X and have the changes to take effect regardless of how you customize it.

    Question: Q: Launchpad Icon Size

Is there any way to reduce the size of icons in Launchpad? They’re ridiculously large on my iMac.

    iMac 24-inch, MacBook Air 13″, Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.6.5), 2x iPhone 4, 2x iPod nano

No, they are automatically sized to fit an 8 by 5 grid. The size of your monitor determines their size.

No, they are automatically sized to fit an 8 by 5 grid. The size of your monitor determines their size.

    Jul 29, 2011 1:16 PM

Crazy. They’re so big on the 24″ iMac it is actually unusable.

    Jul 29, 2011 11:34 PM

They are more than 2″ in size on my 27″ iMac — and no, their size cannot be changed. So, I’ve chosen to ignore Launchpad — I prefer the one click launch of my apps via the dock anyway.

    Jul 29, 2011 11:45 PM

Agree. I like the idea of Launchpad but the icins are too big and spaced too far apart for me even on a humble 21.5″ iMac (yes I am envious of you guys with 27″ 😁).

I want a slider setting to set the amount of screen space (from the center outwards) that LaunchPad uses. I’d be happy if the icon size then scaled to fit but I guess others would like to specify grid sizes other than 8 x 5 too.

To be able to drop the use of the dock altogether, I’d want:

    — the option to show an ‘is running’ indicator

    — the right (two fingered) click context menu in Launchpad

    — different way of notifying user that application needs attention

    Sep 20, 2011 3:54 AM

I’d not want to give up my dock and have to go back to OS 9 (?) days when there was no quick way to open anything — everything involved having to open folders — first the hard drive folder, then Applications, and finally the app itself.

I will never use Launchpad (I also never use icon view in a finder window because I like things filed alphabetically and being able to scroll down or up to find them) — aside from the other issues, I don’t want my iMac looking like an oversized 27″ iPhone.

    Sep 20, 2011 8:14 AM

I like the dock but I am intrigued by the possibilities of a more full-screen-style of user experience. The number of apps I use every day is small enough to fit on the first page of the LaunchPad and that is a single gesture away on my trackpad. But, yes, it needs to be a little more sophisticated than a straight port of the iphone/ipad ui.

    Sep 21, 2011 2:33 AM

I have 67 icons in my dock (which includes only my frequently used apps and folders) — all neatly arranged by «internet», «word processing», «graphics», «video editing», and several very important folders, etc. and I can pretty much find the app I want on the first try. I would not want to look at 2″ icons of all of those — it’s garish looking and would waste too much time first going from launch to page 4 and then find the app I want (page 4 + launch app = 5 clicks vs. 1 click from a minimized dock). And, as far as I know, you can’t just add folders to Launchpad and I have 8 which I need daily.

As long as the dock is not taken away, Launchpad is a non-issue for me. If the dock is discontinued, I will return to opening folders — one at a time — and Launchpad will still be a non-issue for me.

    Sep 21, 2011 8:36 AM

It’s crazy with the new icon size with the latest OSX Lion update so I can use iCloud, I did use Lauchpad and was finding it great but — I hate the new icon size, please can they let a slider bar so that I can make a basic change to the icon size.
