MacPostFactor (formerly known as MLPostFactor) is a simple macOS app designed to help you bypass macOS’ hardware limitations and install Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite on devices that are NOT officially supported.

If you need to install macOS Sierra or macOS High Sierra on an unsupported computer, you need to use the macOS High Sierra Patcher tool.

MacPostFactor will prove to be useful if you are using an older Mac model, but you still want to take advantage of the capabilities provided by Apple’s latest operating system releases.

However, keep in mind that the MacPostFactor application still has its own requirements, such as the presence of a copy of OS X Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite in the Applications folder (must be available as an .app file), and 2GB of RAM. In addition, the installation procedure requires your attention and you will perform it at your own risk.

Carefully follow the installation instructions to deploy macOS on older Macs

To start the installation process you first have make sure that you have MacPostFactor and the macOS installer app in the Application folder. Next, you have to launch MacPostFactor, accept the EULA and then choose where you want to install OS X and what flavor of it you want to install on your older Mac.

It is important to understand that with the help of MacPostFactor you can install OS X Mountain Lion on MacBook2,x, MacBook3,x, MacBook4,x, MacBookPro2,x, MacBookAir1,1, MacMini1,x (C2D upgraded), MacMini2,x, iMac4,x (C2D upgraded), or iMac5,x Macs.

Furthermore, MacPostFactor also helps you install OS X Yosemite and Mavericks only on Macs with upgraded graphics such as the Mac Pro and Xserve.

After you click the Install button, you have to wait until the process ends and then reboot the Mac to complete the installation.

Bringing OS X 10.8+ to older Macs

MacPostFactor has been dev since 2014 when I was in year 9.

Thus the code is a mixture of great and bad.

I’m currently refining it so it’ll fit nicely on github.

How things are going?

The new MacPostFactor v3.0 is almost complete. It can install OS X Mountain Lion on a MacBook with proper patches.

However, there are still stuff to do:

• Custom Recovery (currently, the recovery boot, but is stock)
• USB Key support (currently, MCPF can generate a bootable USB Key, but it cannot install patched OS X)
• Testing all patches and versions

These aren’t so long to do, but given the very low ammount of time I have to focus on it, it ends up taking some time to do.

As such, I won’t give any ETA except that I’d like to release this new version in 2020.

Why do I continue?

The reasons I continue working on it are:

• I collect those old Macs
• I like fiddling around them
• I see emails of people who are still using the software and having issues with the current version.

On that last topic, one reason I don’t answer (or at least quickly) is that I cannot fix your problem :

Some of the bugs MacPostFactor v2.0.1 or earlier have are inherent to their design. Furthermore, the ammount of info it gives me is slim. For example, I don’t get stderr of the install script, which makes it complicated to fix some issues that could be.

I read somewhere that it is possible to install the latest version of OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion on my Mac, even though the official installer refuses to install.

Can you give me any directions ?

Updated answer :

MLPostFactor has been succeeded/replaced by MacPostFactor, and is now being updated by a new crew of programmers. MacPostFactor also supports installing OSX versions up to OSX 10.10 Yosemite on older Macs. And a new version that supports installing OSX 10.11 El_Capitan is in the works.

Yes, thanks to the guys from MLPostFactor, it’s now possible to install OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion (even 10.8.4) on these older Intel-Macs :

Early 2006 (and newer) versions of the iMac and Mac mini

Late 2006 (and newer) versions of the Macbook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro and Xserve

Early 2008 (and newer) versions or the Macbook Air

…and I must say : “(in my case) it runs smoother than MacOSX 10.7”, but there are a few downsides, especially these ones :

– regular OSX updates are disabled, you can only use a special OSX-update routine

– some (but very little) software is not compatible due to various reasons ; e.g. PhotoBooth, Little Snitch

– the SMB client is not working properly (the SMB server is), so file transfer is crippled

– it’s provided “as-is”, so no support from anyone (neither the developer nor me), and no guarantee it will fully or even partially work in your case (especially not if you do not strictly follow all of the directions !!)

. THIS IS FOR (RATHER) EXPERIENCED MAC-USERS ONLY, AND SHOULD NOT BE DONE ON YOUR ‘ONE AND ONLY’ MAC .

– one of the Intel-Macs mentioned above (running MacOSX 10.7 Lion and at least 2GB of RAM)

– an official version of the OSX 10.8 installer, (re)downloaded from the Mac App Store inside your Applications Folder (sorry, pirated versions don’t work…)

– the 32-bit MLPostFactor v3.0 installer-patcher (should be put inside your Applications folder also) you can download from here :

– a full backup of your current harddrive running OSX 10.7 Lion and all your personal files (simply put : “a Time Machine backup of your Mac”)

– a partition of 8GB to create the patched OSX 10.8 installer on ; according to the official directions this should be a partition on your main harddisk called “Install”, but it turns out that ‘if you dare’ you can also use an 8GB USB-stick or an 8GB partition on an external USB- or FireWire-harddisk for this [simply put, MLPostFactor does what Lion DiskMaker does AND includes a patch that’s needed for older Intel-Macs]

– a partition of at least 10GB called “ML” to install the new (patched) OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion onto ; this is will to be your final, ‘new’ harddrive for your ‘old’ Mac… it turns out that ‘if you dare’ you can assign this to your current MacOSX 10.7 Lion harddrive [provided you have a good (TimeMachine) backup]

You should follow the step-by-step instructions above, but just to give a quick impression of the routine :

– make a Time Machine backup and make sure both the OSX 10.8 installer and MLPostFactor are in you Applications folder

– run MLPostFactor to create the patched installer (8GB) for OSX 10.8.4 (or an other version if you prefer that one for some reason…)

– reboot from the patched installer and install the patched OSX 10.8 onto (the desired partition of) the internal harddrive

– this will either end in an error or a white screen (seemingly ‘hung’)

– reboot from the patched installer and run MLPostFactor from there onto the partition you have just installed OSX 10.8 on (= your internal harddrive)

– then reboot from the fresh OSX 10.8 partition (= your internal harddrive)

– if you get a “WiFi: No Hardware Installed”-error, get the KextUtility for OSX 10.8 and install the Edited Atheros Kext for Lion*3

this tool ist not working with imac 2006 and ATI X1600 Garfiks. I install 2 Partitions on my HDD. 1 / 8GB Install and 20 GB HDD.

After i run the MLPOSTFACTOR v.3 App. I select the Install Partition and do it. After reboot i start with efi boot, run ML POstfactor, Select the Partition 20GB. After installing my Mac does not restart, i take this manuell and i becom No Entry Sign on my Screen. Whats that OPlease help me !

Regarding your ‘No Entry’-error :
this could be the “- this will either end in an error or a white screen (seemingly ‘hung’)” as mentioned in the tutorial outline.

Furthermore : please keep in mind “…(this) SHOULD NOT BE DONE ON YOUR ‘ONE AND ONLY’ MAC . ” (as you might run into serious problems once in a while, and there’s no guarantee whatsoever…)

And be aware that :
1- the processor in your 2006 iMac is a 32-bit “Core Duo”, and not a 64-bit “Core 2 Duo”, though OSX 10.8 can run either in 32-bit and 64-bit mode, OSX 10.9 “Mavericks” will only run on 64-bit processors
2- the GPUs (‘graphics cards’) of the GMA-series (which run using ‘shared memory’) do not have official Apple-drivers in 64-bit mode, and using the “Sixty Four On Thirty Two”-conversion will make it possible to run ‘light’ programs very well, but graphics intensive programs like Photoshop, iPhoto and nearly all games will run so slow that using them is not a productive option…
(the makers of PostFactor have alpha-versions of 64-bit drivers for the GMA-cards, but there’s no sign of the final version ever to be released…)
I am not sure if there are 64-bit drivers available for your ATI X6100

I’ve recently done this with MLPostFactor and my graphics are Laggy!. Launchpad doesnt even open. My Specs are
Late 2006 Macbook White.
2 GHz intel Core 2 Duo
2.5 GB Ram

One of the main reasons why Apple doesn’t support any OS beyond MacOSX 10.7.5 on the MacBook “Late 2006” is the lack of an up-to-date graphics card…
So even if you manage to install a newer version of MacOSX (or OSX) on your Mac, you have to keep in mind that you shouldn’t use it for any graphics intensive software (so iPhoto and Photoshop are a no-go…)

how can I do a “special OSX-update routine” from 10.8 to 10.8.5?

Even though I’ve read about a “Special OSX-update routine” it seems like there’s no need to use that, as long as you stay within the same version of OSX.
In your case, that would mean that (as long as you’ve used MLPostFactor to install OSX 10.8 Mountian Lion), you can just update to any new version of OSX 10.8.x using the Mac App Store.
To my knowledge, all OSX 10.8.x updates have been tested to be compatible and run without problems.
Just don’t try to upgrade to OSX 10.9 using the Mac App Store…

can i install this on macbook core duo 2ghz 2gb ram intel ?

As mentioned this is only compatible with the MacBook ‘Late 2006’ and newer…
for the MacBook (so not talking about MacBook Pro or MacBook Air) this means that MacBooks with initial Core Duo processors are not supported, only the MacBooks that have the Core 2 Duo processors are supported…

If I read your info correctly, that means that you can’t install MLPostFactor it on your MacBook…

I had a successful install of MLPF on white MacBook of 10.8.5 and just attempted to add a security update.

Now it doesn’t boot (cycles white boot screen) and booting while holding option shows EFI Boot partition.

Is there a way to remedy this without a reinstall?

Sorry to hear the security update seems to have crippled your MLPF.

If you have a TimeMachine backup, I would suggest reinstalling your latest working backup.
And if you dare, you can see what happens when you try another attempt of installing the security update.

However, it seems a little odd that the security update would corrupt MLPF.
Could it be your harddisk is getting old and unreliable maybe ?

If you have a MacBook Pro “Late 2013” you can install any version of OSX 10.9 “Mavericks” or 10.10 “Yosemite”.
If you want to connect your Mac to the Internet, I would recommend installing the newest version of OSX available.

Since your MacBook Pro “Late 2013” came with OSX 10.9 “Mavericks” pre-installed, Apple will try to prevent you from installing any older version of OSX (or MacOSX), since those older OSX-version will lack the drivers needed to work with the newer hardware components in your Mac.

However… if you install a Virtualization application like Parallels, VM Ware Fusion of the FREE VirtualBox, you might be able to install older versions of OSX (like OSX 10.8 “Mountain Lion”) as a secondary OS…
…I am not familiar with the ins & out on that however.

i’m loving MLPF on my iMac late 2006
it’s all working so smooth and great except of 2 issues i discovered directly after install it

as first: the connection to any SMB-Clients in my Network failed so i can’t connect to them

and as the bigger issue my System Preferences are crashing everytime directly after i click on bluetooth…

i’ve searched for hours & hours how i can resolve this but till no all steps which i found and tried were useless…

can you provide any tips, Tricks or suggestions what i can try to may make it work again?

MountainLionPostFactor (MLPF) is no longer maintained… so I’m afraid bugs won’t get fixed no longer…
however : it’s now called MacPostFactor and it’s being updated by a new team, that even got it to work for installing OSX 10.10 Yosemite and ar now working on getting it compatible with OSX 10.11 El_Capitan

Is it possible to install OS X 10.8.5 directly on a MacBook 2,1 (OS X is 10.6.8)? When I try to use MLPF 0.2.2 it seems not to support that version. Install App not found in application folder although it is definitely there. MLPF 0.3 needs 10.7 at least…

Only OSX-versions supported by Apple can be installed directly onto any Mac. The easiest way of finding out which versions of OSX can be installed on which Mac, is the http://www.EveryMac.com website or their MacTracker-app (for iOS or OSX).
For your MacBook “Late 2006” ( model-ID MacBook2,1 ) the latest version of MacOSX supported by Apple is MacOSX 10.7.5 “Lion”.
So you should install MacOSX 10.7 “Lion” first, then you’ll be able to install MLPF 0.3 (if your MacBook is supported).

If you don’t have a MacOSX 10.7 “Lion” installer, you can get it from Apple :
http://www.apple.com/shop/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion

…but if you ask your local Apple dealer, you might even be able to get it cheaper (or even for free)

anyway : be sure to check on the MacPostFactor/MCPF info pages (the successor to MountainLionPostFactor/MLPF) which version is suited for your MacBook :

Macbook 2.1, 4gb ram, 128gb ssd, after installing vga kext file works “fine” but without smb and afp network support, and after updating to 10.8.5 thru command line i can’t connect to my home wifi, but i can connect to neighbor wifi or my test wifi, reconfiguration of router doesn’t help.. mystery?! 😀 internet thru LAN no problem, but still no networking… almost the same with 24 inch iMac 6.1, 3gb Ram, 128gb SSd, Nvidia GT7300 128MB, but you don’t need install vga kext file..run “out of the box”… for me is the big fail the networking, but i’m trying for solution… the second fail is from apple side, that they disappear support for relatively efficiently computers, because i can always run any other modern OS without any problem,for almost “anything” …

Still, if hardware components of older unsupported Macs have never been used in newer officially supported Macs also, chances are that Apple never made drivers to support those components in newer versions of OSX, and compatibility will therefore never be possible, since Apple is the only one making those drivers…

That’s one of the main reasons you shouldn’t use MLPostfactor/MacPostfactor on your one-and-only or primary Mac.

Sorry to hear you ran into a problematic situation.

If you have followed the instructions, and did not try to install MLPF (or MCPF) on you primary (or even one-and-only) Mac, you will not have lost any valuable data.

What you’re describing seems not to be extremely problematic, just annoying : your problem will probably be fixed by starting up from a MacOSX-installer CD/DVD-rom, and then reinstalling your previous version of MacOSX.

After having done so, I would advise you not to try reinstalling MountainLionPostFactor (MLPF) again, but either stick with the newest version of MacOSX officially compatible with your Mac, or if you’re feeling lucking and have some time to waist, try installing MacPostFacor (MCPF). Hi,
I have macbook pro3.1 – A1226 mid 2007 (895) with 10.5.8 – I checked in terminal it has EFI64
120gb, RAM 4GB, NVDA GForse8600, 124mb video

Using my new iMac and MLPS v1.0.1 I make usb 8gb with Mountain lion 10.8.5
and install that on a macbook pro, installation done well.
After restarting I see logo on white screen and rolling wheel under,
just before entering mac restarting, again and again, this process is looping.
What can be wrong?
I had already repacked it.- nothing
I reinstall version 10.8.4 – nothing

Even though the service status of the Mid2007-MacBook Pro is “obsolete”, it is still “supported” in terms of the latest version of OSX, so OSX 10.11 El_Capitan without any special installs or upgrading.
The only thing is you will have to update the EFI-firmware with “MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1”.
Have a look in MacTracker for more details on this.

my EFI64 will be compatible with OSX10.11 after “MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1”. ?

I requirements listed – I should have already installed OSX 10.7 but I haven’t – is it ok?

I’m not sure if I exactly understand your question…
but this is the preferred route :
– reinstall MacOSX 10.6 (or 10.5)
– then upgrade to 10.6.8 like you used to in the old days
– then install the Mac AppStore application
– then let the Mac AppStore guide you through the upgrade(s) to OSX 10.11 El_Capitan
– tip : make sure you install any (trial)version of Keynote, Pages & Numbers in MacOSX 10.6.8 and you will get the latest versions for FREE on OSX 10.11

if you have Retail-version of MacOSX 10.7 you can use that instead (of 10.6.8)

Hello. I have a mid 2007 macbook santa rosa edition( 4 gb ram, core 2 duo with 800 mhz system bus and intel x3100). Right now i have os x mountain lion running on him(quite smooth actually). I use this laptop for browsing, torrents, movies and youtube. If i install maverick on him will i be able to watch movies on him? Or because of the video card it will run badly?

to be honest : your MacBook2,1 (a.k.a. Mid2007) is 8 years old
for any computer, that’s outdated in any way you look at it
normal ‘life expectancy’ for a Mac is up to 3 years for commercial use and up to 5 years for private use,
what you get extra is just that : what you get extra.

I would suggest not to spend any time and/or money trying to get OSX 10.9 “Mavericks” to run on your MacBook2,1
as you mentioned, the Intel GMA Graphics Card is enormously underpowered by today’s standards

keep it as it is, with MacOSX 10.7.5 “Lion”, and stick to using it for any software that runs on it now
“if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”

if you want to use any newer software that doesn’t run on it, try to get hold of a Mac that can run the latest OSX 10.11 “El_Capitan”… (or buy a brand new Mac)

this may not be the answer you were hoping for, but it’s the best advice I can give…

Yes, i know he is a “bit” oudated 🙂 but i have chosen the macbook in favor of a newer model because of the stability. I’ve installed mountain lion 10.8.5 and i am pretty satisfied with him( i can watch online movies, mkv movie files, etc, etc, etc)
I would install maverick just to see how it’s working(i don’t pay anyone to install it, i do it myself. A new (or newer one) is scheduled at the end of the year, for the mean time for what i am doing what i have is enough :). 10x for the reply(in the mean time i’ve learned how to uninstall and reinstall just safari :D)

just curious : why would you want spend (waist) time to get your MacBook running a newer version of OSX ?
if you’re planning on moving to Windows, and you have time to play, your time might be better spend by installing Windows on your MacBook…
if you install BootCamp you can run Windows 7 (the option to install Windows XP is no longer supported by Apple)
and if you install VirtualBox (free) or an other Virtual Machine, you can even install Windows 10

if you don’t care about loosing time, you can always try installing Mavericks
but beware that you may loose all your data, so make sure you have a good & complete backup !
and YES, I’m afraid there will be little to no gain in installing Mavericks for your MacBook…

by the way : how did you install Mountain Lion ? did you already use MacPostfactor ?
officially your MacBook doesn’t support MacOSX beyond 10.7.5 Lion

@macmanus.nl officialy yes, 10.7.5 it’s the last supported version, but santa rosa(my model at least) has 4gb ram, 2 fizic procesors(core 2 duo) so the hardware allows me to go further. First i used mlpostfactor but i had to edit the system plist to show me 10.8.5 as mlpostfactor knows only as far as 10.8.4. With the macpostfactor everything worked a lot smother and my macbook is on 10.8.5 from august 2015 i think. The battery stil last betwen 2 and 3 hours and i had no issue with the system so far(it’s working pretty good with vlc on playing a movie, 10-12 tabs of safari opened and one of them youtube and playing a movie, email app opend, calendar, some finder windows and utorrent app started with 50+ torrents started)
I can say that the macpostfactor even detected when i messed up and before i could restart the macbook applyed the patch again so i can boot up 🙂
And the maverick install would be just to see if you can install it and if my model runs ok for what i’m doing with him

if you are sure your data are safe, you like to play around and don’t mind spending and maybe even waisting time…
go ahead… do the experiment… if you succeed it will make you happy… for a while 😉

on your MacBook Mavericks will probably run slower than Mountain Lion but than may still be acceptable by your standards…

but keep in mind that Apple never updated the drives for the Intel GMA Graphics Card for OSX 10.8 and up…
and no-one else will do that either…
so even MacPostfactor will have to use the old 10.7-drivers in OSX 10.9
that is a ‘sub-optimal’ situation to put it mildly…

how i’ve managed to broke safari ?
i wanted to install a newer version(and installed a newer version but it wouldn’t open because my system did not meet the minimum req.)
So i’ve deleted the safari app from application folder(after altered the permission), opened terminal and use it to download safari(with curl) and reinstall the right version for me(curl -o safari.pkg ‘http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/45/36/031-28342/piu9tsargpvuaxdnlhf1s0dulnxiuxc8ee/Safari6.2.8MountainLion.pkg’)
i also deleted a folder from system, can’t remember now but i’m looking and post the name of the folder

A = here’s a step-by-step guide :
1. get info for Safari.app (broken version) and alter permissions
2. delete Safari.app
3. delete this folder :
osx/library/staged frameworks
4. download the Safari installer-PKG :
