Question: Q: Printing error Stopped — ‘Filter’ failed
Message to Apple support communities and to Epson Support
I am getting the notorious ‘Filter’ failed error message. I have had this before and managed to find a way to print something simple (B+W text) first (I think). This time I have not found a way around this despite following many suggested solutions from your website and others. At one point, printing from any application would cause it to simply quit. I can’t print anything.
Is there a definitive solution for this problem? This seems to be a common problem many users are having with many other printers for other manufacturers.
I may have other issues happening and I am sure they are separate from this problem which I have had in the past. My computer has been freezing and restarting often would not result in the computer successfully coming back up. I seem to be OK for now, but I had to leave the computer all night after a Restart to find it working this morning.
MacOS High Sierra 10.13.3
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Epson Stylus NX510
Printing both wireless and USB
Run Disk Utility
Run virus checker
Run maintenance programs
Run optimization program
Run program to clean all caches
Reset Printing System (Control-Click on printer list) in Printers & Scanners
Set up both wireless and USB printers in Printers & Scanners
Restarted computer several times
Remove Epson folder from Libraries/Printers
Check for updates
Tried installing software from Epson website (I can’t find the ‘combo’ package mentioned the first time I tried submitting this problem and lost everything had to rewrite about my issue.
Tried making PDFs and then printing from Adobe Acrobat and from Apple Preview

I managed to work out the problem with the Epson tech support people. The ‘Filter’ Failed error seems to me to be the result of something corrupt, or otherwise not right, in the driver software. I do think an uninstaller script made by Epson, or better Apple, would be a good idea. In the old days of the Mac, we could uninstall components and reinstall components of the OS. Now everything is hidden, or so complex that, once something is installed and then develops an issue, it is not possible to easily figure out how to uninstall it. There is a way to Reset the Printing System (Control-Click on the printer list of Printers & Scanners in System Preferences, but a further reinstall step needs to be added. What about other components in the system? How does one do a reinstall of something that may go wrong?
In the instructions from Epson below, you can use Command-Shift G in the Finder, then, a.) Replace ‘space’>’space with /; b.) Make sure the items are moved to trash and not just copied; c.) This should work for other printers, so step 10 would be to go to the support page for your printer; d.) If the support page does not offer a downloadable file, follow the steps for Adding A Printer as you normally would in Printers & Scanners of the Systems Preferences.
If you still have a problem persists try the following:
- Power off your product.
- Open System Preferences and select Print & Fax.
- Highlight the Epson printer and click on the «-» sign to delete the printer.
- Click Delete Printer to confirm and close Print & Fax.
- On your hard drive, select Library > Printers. Delete the Epson folder.
- On your hard drive, select Library > Printers> PPD > Contents > Resources. Delete Epson Printer Name.gz
- On your hard drive, select Library > Cache and delete the Epson folder.
- Close the hard drive.
- Restart your computer and power on the printer.
- Go to http://www.epson.ca/support .
- Search for your product or select it from the list.
- Select Downloads.
- Choose the printer or scanner driver for your system and click Download Now.
- Once the download has completed, click on the file from your desktop to launch the installer.
- Follow the directions to complete the installation.
- Try Printing again. A
From the Epson support page for my printer (note – I found that the driver install was an option available when I did step 5):
The latest printer driver for this product is available from Apple’s Software Update. Here’s how to get it:
1. Do one of the following:
USB: Connect your product to your Mac using a USB cable and make sure the product is turned on.
Wireless: Make sure your product is turned on. Connect your product to your wireless network.
Ethernet: Connect your product to your Mac using an Ethernet cable and make sure the product is turned on.
2. Go to the menu on your Mac, then select System Preferences.
3. Select Printers and Scanners, Print & Scan, or Print & Fax.
4. Do one of the following:
If your printer is not on the list, go to step 5.
If your printer is on the list, select your printer model and click the «-» (minus) button. Then go to step 5.
5. Click the «+» button. (If you see the Add Printer or Scanner. option, select it.)
In the screen that appears, select your printer model as below:
USB connection: Select the EPSON Series (USB) product.
Wireless or Ethernet connection: Select the EPSON Series (Bonjour) product.
Select your EPSON Series product in the Use or Print Using drop-down list, then click the Add button.
6. Go to the menu on your Mac, select Software Update or App Store, then click the Updates tab.
7. Do one of the following:
If you see an update from Epson, select UPDATE to install it. Note: Apple Software Update may find multiple updates for your system. You may choose to install all or some of the updates.
If an update is not available, you already have the latest Epson driver for your product.

Question: Q: catalina printer error «filter failed»
I’ve had install catalina but now i can’t print from using my Oki color multifunctions Mc861+ — I get the error «Filter failed » when I try to print. I removed and reinstalled the driver but dont’ work !
When i try to reinstall the printer, by bonjour i can istall it but by ip adress i can’t.
Oki for the moment stopped providing a dedicated driver at 10.14.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same issue with the
same printer or another, and a workaround if possible?
Hope someone can help! Thanks in advance.

I too had this issue on an C831, could not for the life of me get anything to work, removed and reinstalled drivers, reset my printer settings as per a few articles I saw, restarted my mac a few times etc.
Just now, I was able to restore function, I can not explain the why, but I can tell you exactly what I did:
Turn the printer off with via the power button, not unplugging. Remove/delete the printer from your list of devices. Shut down your Mac, wait at least 30 seconds (I was working so it stayed off for a few minutes) then restart. Let it do it’s usual startup routine. Then I added the printer again, the same as I had done previously, no new tricks, my Mac detected my Oki and I clicked through the steps to reinstall. I can’t be certain but I did select «generic postscript printer» as opposed to using software for the drivers, (I don’t remember doing this step previously and cant be sure what the default setting is, but that was my selection). As of now this seems to be working, I have read that this may need to be repeated eventually due to some corruption but that is beyond my technical expertise.
Hope this works for you and in any case I hope Oki provides some updated drivers for us all! I don’t usually update right away but I was so happy with the update on my phone I went ahead and updated my Mac as well. I won’t make that mistake again!

Question: Q: Printer ‘filter failed’ in Mojave
Upgraded to Mojave and my HP LaserJet CP1025nw printer never works.
Reset printer system several times and reinstall HP printer driver v5.1 pack, but no luck.
It’s always got ‘filter failed’ when printing doc/photo files with Preview app.
Finally I found it’s APPLE’s problems and not HP’s driver issues.
‘Preview’ app can’t print PDF files and ‘Foxit Reader’ app can print PDF successfully.
Hope Apple can check this issue and fix it as soon as possible. Thanks.

Hi, I have the same problem. I also tried to reset the drivers and updated the printer firmware but no success. We have two different macs, both kept up to date, and the error came on both macs at the same time. Both are completely up to date (latest Mojave OS) so probably this came with an upgrade. I tried printing directly from Safari as well as a PDF.

I have the same issue with Mojave and my Brother HlL-3070CW. Worked fine until upgrade to Mojave. I can print thru Word, but any Mac Program (Preview, Safari) that I try to print from ends with «filter failed». Talked to Apple Support and they suggested updating Mojave to 10.14.2, which I did and issue persisted. Seems like every time I call them now they tell me to format my computer (which I have done twice in the past two months in an attempt to fix ongoing Bose bluetooth headphone dropouts. So much for technical support. Printer does work if I make no adjustments to the printer features in the print dialog box, but if I attempt to upgrade printing to Vivid, or enhance black printing, etc, it’s over. Love Dark Mode in Mojave, but printer disability is a major bummer. 🙁

something as basic as communicating with printers Apple can’t get right. This is why I try never to upgrade anything until I have to. Microsoft word doesn’t work right either after installing Mojave. Been with a Mac since I replaced «Lisa» with the first mac. Is it really time to switch to the dreaded other platform?

I have the same problem with my HP laserjet CP1025 color, it is getting time too look around to other computers, Apple is losing and getting much to expensive and the quality is getting less. Using for over 13 years Apple products but really thinking to stop with the brand.
My Iphone 7plus, 2 years old and getting problems with the touch screen, my Iphone X getting problems with the screen after 3 months. It is too crazy for words, Apple really disappointing me.

Spoke with Applecare, and they said it is the fault of the printer companies, as they need to update their drivers better. Applecare said that all third party companies get Beta versions of any new OS software prior to the software release to the public, and it is up to them to update their own drivers so that they work with the new OS after it gets released to the public. On the flip side, Brother Tech Support said that if the printer works with Microsoft Word, and prints test pages correctly, and works with Google Chrome, that it is the fault of Apple, so both sides blame the other, and the consumer gets screwed in the middle. I will note that Messages program has errors in it as well after upgrade (can’t block contacts from texting) and that an Apple program with defects running on Apple OS. Hard to blame 3rd party for that. Plus, the fact that the the filter failed error is only coming up on Apple programs (Safari, Preview, Mail) after updating Apple OS Mojave (and not on Chrome or Word or Photoshop), leads me to ultimately deduce that Apple is most likely the primary culprit. No one I know likes to update software given all the errors that occur as a result, and most wouldn’t if they could get by without it. However, Apple forces you to update OS, by both software and hardware requirements. I agree with the comments below that while Apple Design has improved over the years, the actual reliability of the product is declining. My MacBook 12 (2015) looks and feels nice, but has been nothing but problems. I was denied AppleCare warranty purchase on a technicality, need a keyboard replacement, and have had to reformat the hard drive twice already at the instruction of Apple. My 3 year old iPhone 6s plus has already had a battery replacement. In the last two years, I have had to call Apple at least 20 times (and I am a skilled computer user compared to the average person, and look up everything I can before calling Tech Support). At least their phone support is free. There is that. Sadly, it is still the best computer on the market, and has a price tag to match. Perhaps Elon Musk should start building computers too!

Mac OS 10.10 не печатает принтер, ошибка Filter Failed
Filter Failed
sudo sh -c ‘echo «Sandboxing Off» >> /etc/cups/cups-files.conf’
sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd
