How To Reset Mac OS X Launchpad Layout To Default Settings

If you’ve ever found yourself in a situation where the OS X Launchpad needs a quick refresh to default settings, then here’s how to do it.

The Mac OS X Launchpad is seen by many as the iOS-ification of the Mac, and while it is very easy to look at the rows of icons and think of an iPhone and iPad, the Launchpad feature is just the logical extension of the Mac’s Applications folder. Unfortunately though, it can have a few strange little moments here and there.

We’ve heard plenty of reports over time that have the Launchpad interface doing odd things such as losing icons, or using the wrong icon to represent particular apps. These kinds of things may not be show stoppers, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t supremely irritating at times. Thankfully forcing Launchpad to refresh by resetting, rebuilding its icons as it goes, isn’t a difficult task at all.

Before you follow these steps though it’s worth noting that any configuration you have done to Launchpad will be gone afterwards. Any icons that you have moved around will be back where they started etc, but that’s no doubt preferable to having no icons, for example.

So assuming you’re in agreement there, here’s what you need to do in order to force Launchpad to refresh.

Step 1: Open a Terminal window by typing ‘Terminal’ into Spotlight and hitting ‘Return’ key.

Step 2: Now run the following command:

defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool true; killall Dock

You’ll notice the Dock refresh and when you check Launchpad it should be obvious that it has returned to its virgin state, hopefully sans any weird graphical problems. You can also do this if you just want to return things to how there were before you made any changes, too.

Your only job at this point is to rearrange your apps all over again, but we always find there’s something somewhat cleansing about doing things like this, so take the opportunity to get rid of unused apps completely. Your Mac will thank you!

How to Reset Launchpad Layout in Mac OS Catalina, Mojave, Sierra, OS X El Capitan & Yosemite

Launchpad serves as a quick way to open applications on the Mac from a familiar iOS-like icon grid interface.

If you’ve customized the way these app icons and arranged in Launchpad, you may decide you’d like to start from scratch and reset their order to how things appear when you first get a Mac.

Resetting Launchpad layout can also be helpful if you want to rearrange the way Launchpad icons show up, but it can also be helpful to resolve some display bugs with Launchpad, particularly if an icon doesn’t show up or is displaying incorrectly.

In prior versions of MacOS X, users were able to refresh Launchpad contents by dumping a handful of database files, but in Mac OS and MacOS X 10.10.x onward, you’ll need to use a defaults command string to reset Launchpad contents and layout instead.

How to Reset Launchpad Layout in MacOS Catalina, Mojave, Sierra, El Capitan, etc

Open the Terminal application and enter the following defaults write command string:

defaults write com.apple.dock ResetLaunchPad -bool true; killall Dock

Hit return and wait for the Dock to relaunch and Launchpad to reset

When you open Launchpad again, the layout will have returned to the default, placing all bundled apps onto the first screen of Launchpad, and third party apps onto the secondary (and third, if applicable) screens.

You can now rearrange the icons and layout of Launchpad as you see fit, or just keep the default layout of Apple apps on the first screen, with third party apps and additions on the later screens.

This defaults command string was found on stackexchange, though the user who mentioned it still listed the old database dumping trick as a necessary step – in testing, that latter Launchpad database removal command is not necessary to simply reset the Launchpad layout in modern versions of Mac OS from OS X Yosemite 10.10.x +.

Question: Q: LaunchPad automatically reset

After I upgraded to macOS Catalina, every time I restart my MacBook, the Apps used to be in Others folder all come out to the main page. I’ve tried to use the following command and it worked temporarily, after a restart, the problem comes up again. Any suggestions for that?

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I may not state clearly about the issue. I’m not referring about apps and documents reopening when you restart your Mac. Instead, I’m referring to the layout of LaunchPad. I’ve moved apps, like Automator, Disk Utility, etc, to the folder named Others in order to keep the LaunchPad clean. However, whenever I restart my MacBook, all those apps go back out of the folder. Not sure what causes that issue.

The Launchpad pulls those apps from the built-in Applications folder that comes with macOS.

Lots of people having this issue including me with Catalina. The Launchpad applications REARRANGE every time I restart. They don’t stay in the same place I have moved them in Launchpad.

I’ve been having this same issue. I want to say it started with the Catalina update as well. No Terminal commands have helped me.

I have the same problem and I suspect it’s a bug in OS. Resetting the launchpad (either via Onyx, Terminal commands, etc) only works temporarily and after rebooting a few times it show all apps again in a random (?) order, both on my Macbook Pro and my Mac mini. This issue only began when I upgrade my OS to Catalina, I believe.

My analysis was that it’s only a limited number of built-in apps which belonged in the «other» folder which show this behavior in Launchpad in Catalina.

1) take note of the apps which appear after the «other» folder in launchpad (also on the second page), and which shouldn’t appear there but rather in the «other» folder itself

2) within the Applications folder in Finder, drag the apps you took note of to the «other» folder (you’ll have to type your local password)

3) I tried this several times and it seemed like one or two apps weren’t coming back in Launchpad after automatic «resets» of Launchpad, so I carried on the dragging and dropping from the Applications folder to the «Other» folder in Finder until Launchpad was «back to normal»

For me, the apps seem to remain in the Applications folder in Finder after I move them, but at least they don’t come back in Launchpad, and it seems to be fixed for me, for a week or two now. In past months, the «reset» of Launchpad occurred everyday or so. I am still curious as to what prompts this bug.

Hopefully some of you will be able to build on this and perhaps simplify this process. Best of luck!
