Question: Q: how to scroll lock on a mac

Looking to upgrade my mac and was wondering if the new mac book pros have the capability to scroll lock. I need this feature for programs I use at home for work. Thanks I know it’s a silly question but it is not easy possible to do on my older macbook.

The new MBPs have the same keyboard layout as previous models. Apple computers don’t use a «scroll lock» key so the scroll lock function would depend on the app(s) you’re using. If your profile info is up-to-date and you are using a Macbook, how are you doing scroll lock now? If you are able to «scroll lock» now on your current Mac, then it would be the same procedure or key combination on the new MBPs.

I can’t scroll lock on my current MacBook now that is the problem. I don’t have a F14 key which seems to be the key people suggest to try or the F12 +alt+function. I even purchased an external full keyboard hoping this would work but to no avail. I’d hate to purchase a PC to do work from home but I may have to.

I’m not using «apps» I am logging in remotely from home to my work PC using GoToMyPC from there I can access any program that is on my work PC.

I can’t scroll lock on my current MacBook now that is the problem. I don’t have a F14 key which seems to be the key people suggest to try or the F12 +alt+function. I even purchased an external full keyboard hoping this would work but to no avail.

The catch is that OSX will intercept the function keys and use them for itself. Make sure you don’t have anything using F14. Either in System Preferences, or any other third party add-ons that give mouse or keyboard shortcuts or extras.

Since Macs don’t use Scroll Lock, this is why I mention it’s up to the app to give you a scroll lock.

I’m not using «apps» I am logging in remotely from home to my work PC using GoToMyPC from there I can access any program that is on my work PC.

In your case the «app» is GoToMyPC. See if GoToMyPC has a option to «send key». I use LogMeIn, which has a send ctrl-alt-del, but not send Scroll Lock. Hopefully GoToMyPC does, which would be best in your situation.

Otherwise there are only two ways I know of to do what you want from within OSX:

1. Use Windows’ onscreen keyboard on the office computer. (Start, All Programs, Accessories, Accessibility. Different versions of Windows may have it in slightly different locations.) With a large screen on a desktop, this may be acceptable. (On LogMeIn, I can have the host screen «fit» or zoomed in to my remote screen’s size, which makes the onscreen keyboard usable for me.)
2. Microsoft Remote Desktop. The Mac app for Remote Desktop Connection (sometimes known as Remote Desktop Protocol or Terminal Services) has an option that you can map keys. I verified that Scroll Lock is possible. Due to the limited number of keys on the Macbooks, you’ll have to find something that’s not in use by either OSX or Windows. (For example, in the test, I used Shift-F12 for Scroll Lock.)

The catch with 2) is that you’ll need to be able to configure port forwarding on your company’s firewall, or preferably have a VPN. While a VPN is more complex to setup, IMHO a VPN is necessary because of some vulnerabilities discovered with the older version of the protocol, which the Mac client still uses.

The only other option would be not running OSX when connecting to the office. Note, this does not necessarily mean getting a PC. You could install Windows in Boot Camp. You’d still have the problem of no actual Scroll Lock key on the Mac, but since OSX is not running, any full sized keyboard plugged into the Mac would then send the F14/Scroll Lock key correctly to the office computer. (Or running Windows in a virtual machine, but there are limitations with that as well, although the VM is more convenient in that you don’t have to boot «out of» OSX like you would with Boot Camp.)

I am the king of random shortcuts and always seem to hit keys when typing that have unexpected consequences, such as this morning when I was doing something in Excel and managed to trigger scroll lock. But there’s no scroll lock on a Mac keyboard…

Excel and Scroll Lock

When scroll lock is on and you use the arrow keys to navigate around a spreadsheet in Excel, it scrolls the sheet instead of moves the active selection to another cell.

This can be annoying when you were in the middle of navigating around the spreadsheet with arrow keys and then suddenly the sheet starts moving instead. The problem is scroll lock is on, and you need to switch it off again.

Scroll Lock on a Mac Extended Keyboard

A PC keyboard has a scroll lock key, but a Mac one doesn’t appear to. If you are using an Apple Extended Keyboard it does, and the super secret scroll lock key is… F14

I personally have the “Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys” enabled in the system preferences, but found whether this was switched on or off that F14 on its own or FN+F14 would switch scroll lock on and off (on OSX Mavericks).

I don’t have an answer for this one, because the keyboard only has function keys from 1 to 12. I’ve done a fair amount of Googling for a solution but none of the shortcuts people have suggested work.

Given there doesn’t seem to be a scroll lock equivalent on these smaller keyboards, you’re unlikely to be able to trigger scroll lock anyway, so hopefully don’t have my random shortcut issue!

Question: Q: How to turn off scroll lock for macbook pro

I am having trouble in MS Excel to move from cell to cell with my arrow keys. I think the scroll lock is on but can’t turn it off.

I tried Fn F6 but now I can’t change the dimmer on my display. What am I doing wrong?

Just solved this problem on my side.

My solution is to press «fn+cmd+down arrow».

It works on my MBP with Excel 2015.

Try going to sytem prefs> track pad and check your settings thee, maybe you have something clicked that you don’t want clicked, in regard to scrolling

This is Microsoft’s official answer for Mac user’s with a notebook:

1. Quit Excel
2. Go to UserName:Library:Preferences*
3. Delete the file: com.microsoft.Excel.plist

* Username:Library means look for the Library folder in your user account. To see the Library in 10.7 and 10.8 you must open the Finder and then hold the Option key while looking under the Go menu in the Finder.

If you seriously miss the extended FN keys of the standard wired keyboard you might find Keyboard Maestro (a macro creation program) useful. Among other things, I have keyboard shortcuts to emulate the FN keys so I don’t have to hit FN which I find annoying. And it lets me create FN equivalents for the keys I’m missing on my MBP.

I have a printer switch to use my printer with both my PC and Mac.

The darn Mac BT keyboard has not scroll lock key which is necessary to initiate the darn printer switch!

Anybody know the equivalent key on the Mac?

I can’t find it under the keyboard System Preferences!

I have the exact same keyboard and issue. SHIFT+F14 did not work. I also saw another suggetion for CTRL+F14. That didn’t work either. I’ve tried a bunch of keys and sequences to try and find it by chance, but no luck so far. Did anyone ever find a fix or workaround? Is there a key mapping software or app that would let me make a key sequence to match that of a scroll lock under Windows? I’m brand new to the mac world so any info on how to go about finding a fix would be helpful too. Thanks!

Oh, one other thing, somewhere I saw mention of an «extended keyboard» for the mac that includes a scroll lock key. Anyone know what that is all about? I would assume that the mac keyboards can send the Windows scroll lock command if the exteneded keyboard can do it.

Any USB keyboard with a scroll lock button should work perfectly, Apple’s keyboards don’t have a scroll lock button because, for most people, it’s useless. You’ve already got page up/down and the scroll wheel on most mice, why have an extra button that no-body understands?

It seems very strange to me that a printer driver would take over the scroll lock button, does this mean you can no-longer use the button for it’s original purpose?

Anyway, the answer is you’ll need to plug in a keyboard with a scroll lock button, unless there’s some software that will let you bind another key to scroll lock.

On real terminals Scroll Lock sends Control-S to pause text and Control-Q to resume. Try typing Control-S, then Control-Q.

when I plug in a usb windows keyboard, scroll lock is mapped to «adjust screen brightness down» not the actual scroll lock key. And yes the scroll lock key still works as it should. The switch only recognizes a double tap of the scroll lock key, much like a double click on a mouse. Any other suggestions?

Either that didn’t work or I was doing it incorrectly. I’ve decided my time is better spent doing other stuff and paid $14 for a manual switch on eBay. Seems to be working just fine now. Thanks for all your suggestions. If anyone figures out a proven method, please post it. I’d like to know if it can be done.
