To delete a file in /usr/bin/, you need to disable SIP (System Integrity Protection) by following below steps:

  1. Turn off your Mac (Apple > Shut Down).
  2. Hold down Command-R and press the Power button. Keep holding Command-R until the Apple logo appears. Wait for OS X to boot into the OS X Utilities window.
  3. Choose Utilities > Terminal. Enter csrutil disable . Enter reboot .

To enable SIP again, repeating the above steps (2 first steps), enter csrutil enable and reboot your Mac OS.

Had the same issue, try this if the php version you need is already installed.

It’s system php file. You shouldn’t delete it. Better install another php version with homebrew

something like sudo brew unlink phpxx , where xx is your version number. Never delete file inside other directories then your home directory manually, unless you know what you’re doing.

How to uninstall php 7.1

I’m trying to install the php driver and for that I first need to unlink the php 7.1 and install the 5.6 but when I try:

brew unlink php71

I get this error message:

Error: No such keg: /usr/local/Cellar/php@7.1

As of macOS 10.14 («Mojave»), PHP 7.1 is installed as a component of the operating system at /usr/bin/php . This installation cannot be removed, but you can install other additional versions of PHP through Homebrew.

PHP 5.6 reached end-of-life in December 2018, and should no longer be used. It is not installable through Homebrew.

This will work, if you have installed php through brew. But, I agree with @duskwuff -inactive- that php 5.6 should no longer be used, as suggested by homebrew itself.

$ brew upgrade php : ( get the latest homebrew php packages )

$ brew install php@7.4 : ( Install php 7.4 )

$ brew link php@7.4 : ( create an alias to this keg-only version; see comments output during installation )

$ echo ‘export PATH=»/usr/local/opt/php@7.4/bin:$PATH»‘ >>

/.bash_profile : ( Add the alias to your path; see comments output during installation )

/.bash_profile : ( Reload .bash_profile to use the new settings immediately )

then install the latest php version (PHP 8.0.8 in the time of writing):

link new version to /usr/local/Cellar/php/8.0.8:

then open the shell’s resource file, located in

/ (in my case Z-shell or ZSH):

press i to insert and somewhere in your resource file append a new path to your $PATH variable, like this:

or in the case of ZSH, you should also be able to do it like this:

then press esc to escape from insert mode, and press :wq to save/write and quit the editor. The final step is to source the file to apply new changes permanently.
