Audio not working on VirtualBox Windows 10 guest (macOS host)

I am running Windows 10 Home guest OS in a VirtualBox VM, on macOS host running 10.13.6 High Sierra with VirtualBox 5.2.23.

Audio worked a few times, then it stopped working. (A virtualbox version update or me tweaking settings might have caused this, I am not sure.) =

  • I tried doing a clean install from ISO with all default Windows 10 settings on VirtualBox, no audio there, either.
  • I tried another Mac I own (that one has macOS 10.14 Mojave installed), when I install the same image, with the same config, and with the same VirtualBox, it works there. (weird)

The guest OSes think there’s audio available. But it just isn’t playing on the host. Here’s a screenshot from Volume Mixer:

Here’s what I tried so far:

Different versions of VirtualBox

I suspect this might have happened (not sure) after upgrading VirtualBox, so I tried latest version 5.2.23, as well as some old versions like 5.2.14 and 5.2.18. No luck.

Another OS

I tried Ubuntu Desktop (live CD), it also thinks audio is available. Differently than windows, when I try to play some video/audio on Firefox, the player actually never starts the video or audio. (weird)

Windows enhancements/debugging

  • Windows Guest Additions are fully installed.
  • Windows updates are all complete.
  • I disabled driver signature verification
  • I tried Sound troubleshooting, nothing came back.
  • dxdiag shows Sound is fine (says «No problems found» and device name is «Speakers (High Definition Audio Device):

Virtual Machine settings

Here’s the settings I’m using:

I tried other paravirtualization settings like «None» or «Default» instead of Hyper-V but no luck.

Try another audio driver

Instead of Intel HD audio controller setting on VirtualBox, I tried using the ICH AC97 setting. So I installed the archaic Realtek AC’97 audio drivers for Vista/7 on Windows 10.

It successfully recognized the change, but still doesn’t work:

VM logs

Symptom: VM shutdown crashes VirtualBox

If I force-poweroff a VM from VirtualBox, the entire VirtualBox process crashes on macOS.

1 Answer 1

OK I did A LOT of debugging on this one, and there’s no definite solution to this, it’s a glitch.

I upgraded both of my Macs to the same version. I used same version of VBox. Heck, I even copied the Virtual Machine along with the disk and settings from one machine to another. It lead to one result: The VM audio worked on one Mac, but not the other.

To fix this: Go to devicemgr in the Windows guest VM, right-click to the sound device, disable it. Then enable it. It should be working.

So far this is the only solution that worked for me, and it works reliably again when I lose audio and I restore it with this technique. Weird enough, once the audio is broken, it’s broken for all VMs (windows, linux, doesn’t matter) –but once you fix it like this, it’s fixed everywhere (the wtf moment).

I think this glitch happens when you plug your Mac to an external display with audio (like Apple Cinema Display), and VirtualBox confuses where to send the audio, and choosing it from the Sound settings on macOS won’t help.

No sound in OSX guests after 5.1

Reported by: socratis Owned by:
Component: audio Version: VirtualBox 5.1.0
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: OSX Server Host type: Mac OS X

Description

All OSX clients show that there is no sound output with 5.1.0_RC1 and later (maybe even earlier in the 5.1b series, didn’t notice). In the Sound panel of the System Preferences, the following can be seen:

  • 5.1.0 —> Output: Digital Out, Input: Line in, Internal microphone.
  • 5.0.24 —> Output: Internal Speakers, Input: Line in, Internal microphone.

The audio settings for the VM are: CoreAudio, Intel HDA.

Host: MacBookPro 17″, early 2011. OSX 10.9.5.

Same problem with HD audio here, but under Linux + OSS HD audio drivers. I just updated to v5.1, and on the systems running Linux + OSSv4 (the true OSS, not the few leftovers in the Linux kernel),VirtualBox reports a failure to initialize the host sound.

I get a dialog on the VM startup, saying:

Some HDA audio streams (PCM Input) could not be opened. Guest applications generating audio output or depending on audio input may hang. Make sure your host audio device is working properly. Check the logfile for error messages of the audio subsystem.

ID de l’erreur : HostAudioNotResponding

I also attached a file corresponding to the log for the above VM error, the relevant lines in that log being, apparently:

00:00:00.851952 OSS: Failed to retrieve buffer length: Opération non supportée (95)

00:00:00.851963 OSS: Closing stream failed: Mauvais descripteur de fichier

Which Translate to «unsupported operation» and «bad file descriptor».

Hi there,
I’ve got (almost) the same issue: Running XP within VBox v5.1.2 on an OSX 10.11.6 host.
When starting the VM I receive exactly the same error.
Audio settings are: Core Audio + ICH AC97
Output: Internal Speakers, Input: Line in, Internal microphone.
Audio used to work on v5.1.0 which was a fresh install on an iMac (Early 2009).
All the best, taidoka

Actually you are both describing of a different bug introduced in 5.1.2. See ticket #15659.

I have had the same problem with different linux distros (Opensuse, ubuntu 16.04) and Windows 10. Sound doesn’t work at all.

I have had the same problem with different linux distros (Opensuse, ubuntu 16.04) and Windows 10. Sound doesn’t work at all.

I’m sorry, but this is a bug about OSX guests on OSX hosts. Not about not having sound, but about the guest showing different output options. My Linux guests are working just fine. Maybe there is a more fitting bug for your problem?

I have the same problem using VBox v5.1.3, r109189 on an 15″ MBP OS-X 10.11.6 (El Capitan) host with Windows 10Pro. Sound doesn’t work at all. No way to solve this issue after doing many changes in more than a week. What to do?.

@pedelar
No, you do NOT have the same problem. You didn’t even read the problem. The only thing in common that you have is no sound. Read comment:3, right above yours. What you most probably have is a case of bug #15659. Maybe you don’t get a warning because you elected to not show it again.

comment:8 Changed 5 years ago by frank

The latest 5.1 test builds should re-enable the sound for Mac OS X guests.

comment:9 Changed 5 years ago by socratis

In theory it works, for a couple of builds now. I see «Internal Speakers» as the Output. However due to #15659 I can’t actually test it. But all the signs are correct, like the volume control being enabled for example.

Ubuntu 16.04 host ANY guest PulseAudio device

I can confirm the problem is not present in VirtualBox-5.1.0-108711-Linux_amd64 but it is present in virtualbox-5.1_5.1.2-108956-Ubuntu-xenial_amd64

(haven’t tested the test build mentioned above. I’m not in a position to use the test build unfortunately)

comment:11 Changed 5 years ago by socratis

@dark_sylinc I’m sorry, but I don’t think that this is the bug you’re looking for. This is for OSX Guests on OSX Hosts (obviously) mis-identifying the Audio Output options, and it seems to be fixed. Maybe you should look more carefully about a bug that applies to your case?

@Mr. T
This is not the problem described in this thread. You’re looking for another bug, #15659. Please post your comment there.

This should be closed per the 5.1.4 release notes.

No sound on Virtualbox with Mac OS Mojave as guest

Hi I installed MacOS Mojave in virtualbox, everything is working fine except sound, there are no input and output devices showing in MACOS guest.

I am on Ubuntu 19.04 and using latest virtualbox 6.0.1

I would also like to mention that its working super fine in wmware, But I don’t wanna use that as there are some graphics issues.

I’m still tracking down audio but the above answer on screen resolution is just not correct. Run this from your Virtual Box install location. I’ve ran this on Windows 10 and have full screen.

VBoxManage setextradata » » VBoxInternal2/EfiGraphicsResolution 1920×1080

Note: Be sure to change to the name of your VM instance.

Since, I did not need the audio input for my virtual box instance so I unchecked the «Enable Audio Input» option from sound settings of Virtual box and got my host’s sound back.

Try switching the guest audio driver to Intel HD Audio. ICH AC’97 Is a very old codec from 1997 and will most likely NOT work on newer hardware.

EDIT: Despite having the option, VBOX does not support MacOS at ALL, and will not recognize anything other than the mouse and keyboard. Sure, you might get a display, but it’s outputting in a resolution of 1024×768, but this is fixed and you can’t change the resolution. Sorry, it’s just the way it is.
