Mac OS X

    on idle
    tell application «System Events»
tell current location of network preferences
set myVPN to the service «VPN NAME»
if myVPN is not null then
if current configuration of myVPN is not connected then
    connect myVPN
    end if
    end if
    end tell
    return 60
    end tell
    end idle

    Doesn’t save login information

It’s nice because it asks you to log in immediately when your VPN connection drops, but it doesn’t save the password.

    Just works. Very simple.

Nice little app that does what it says seamlessly. Doesn’t require re-authenticated each time as an earlier review claimed.

After installing I tinkered around with various network connections turning them on and off again while this was running. It performed flawlessly. It gives you a warning when there is no network connection, which is nice. The only nit of a recommendation is that after three or five warnings it would either turn off automatically or ask you if you want to turn it off. But for the price, I’m happy with what it does. Oh, and sleep mode is nice – it reconnects after waking from sleep.

Simple, elegant, and almost completely transparent.

    Works good….but…..

This application works as advertised. If you have a VPN profile already set up, simply tell the app to connect to it whenever Wi-Fi is detected. Waa laa, it connects every time I open my laptop. Here is the only problem. I am connecting to a VPN server at my house. As such, as soon as I get home and open my laptop, it tries to connect to the VPN….and fails because it can’t loop back to the same IP I’m originating from. If the developer could update this app to allow for exceptions, then I could avoid having it try to connect on certain SSID’s, while connecting everywhere else. That would make the app AMAZING and definitely worth 5 stars! Please consider this enhancement.

Auto Connect to VPN on Boot & Login in Mac OS X

If you use a VPN with a Mac for either work or personal reasons, you may wish to have the Mac automatically connect to the VPN service when the Mac is booted or upon login. Or maybe you just want the VPN to automatically reconnect if the connection drops and disconnects. This is easily accomplished with the help of a simple AppleScript, which will both automatically connect to the VPN upon system startup and login, and also check to see if the VPN is active, and reconnect if necessary.

Obviously you’ll need an active VPN service and VPN location setup in Mac OS for this script to work, otherwise the script will have nothing to connect to upon login and system boot. If you do not have or use a VPN (Virtual Private Network), then this trick will be of little use to a particular Mac.

How to Connect to VPN on Boot or Login in Mac OS X, Automatically

This auto-connect VPN script should work on any version of macOS or Mac OS X system software. Essentially what we’re doing is placing a connection script into Login Items so that it loads automatically on system start and user login events:

    1. Open “Script Editor” on the Mac, it is found within the /Applications/Utilities/ folder
    2. Go to the File menu and choose “New”
    3. Copy and paste the following AppleScript syntax into the new blank script editor:

    on idle
    tell application «System Events»
tell current location of network preferences
set myVPN to the service «VPN NAME»
if myVPN is not null then
if current configuration of myVPN is not connected then
    connect myVPN
    end if
    end if
    end tell
    return 60
    end tell
    end idle

Replace “VPN NAME” with the name of the accompanying VPN network location as found in System Preferences Network control panel (you can also change the return number to check the network more or less often, in seconds)

  • Go to the “File” menu again and choose “Save”
  • Under the ‘File Format’ pulldown menu, choose “Application”
  • Check the box next to “Stay open”

  • Now choose “Save” and give the VPN script and obvious name (like ‘AutoVPN’) and put it somewhere easy to locate, like the Desktop or users home directory
  • Next go to the  Apple menu and select “System Preferences” and go to the “Users & Groups” control panel
  • Choose the active user name, then select “Login Items”
  • Drag and drop the ‘AutoVPN’ AppleScript application you created into the Login Items section so that it loads automatically on login and system start

Now anytime you reboot the Mac or login after being logged out, the VPN service will connect automatically. Likewise, if the service is disconnected for some reason or another, it will attempt to reconnect to the VPN automatically.

Variations of this handy AppleScript have been around for ages and for a variety of purposes, and while here it demonstrates how to automatically connect to a VPN on login and reconnect to a VPN if it loses connection, it can be adjusted to perform other actions or automatically connect and reconnect to other services, including wi-fi or ethernet networks.

Know of another useful trick to automatically connect to a VPN network on a Mac? Or have a better solution or script? Let us know in the comments.

    Impractical to use with WIFI

I’ve emailed the support and received absolutely no response on this issue. Currently when using wifi, when you boot up and your computer is first connecting to the network, VPN Autoconnect will continually popup telling you it can’t connect to the VPN but on top of that it prevents you from selecting a WIFI network.

So in order to use it at the moment, you have to turn it off every time you boot up your computer or lose WIFI connection.

What it needs to do is check if a network device is connected before beginning it’s internet blocking polling for a VPN connection, without it it’s pretty useless and annoying.

    Still issue with the icon

Your icon dose not work with Yosemite dark theme (status bar). You could also add to the dropdown a dot next to the active VPN indicating red/yellow/green disconnected/connecting/connected.
An active IP, connection time address will be nice too. Thanks

    Does not work with Sierra

Paid for and installed the app. It does not work on OS X Sierra.

    Fake. YALAN

This is a fake. YALAN, SAKIN İNDİRMEYİN. PARA TUZAĞI.!

Very good. It just needs a little more improvements.

I have been looking for a solution to keep my VPN connection alive. This app provides this feature. I have added it to my “Login Items” thus it runs automatically when my computer starts.

    1. Please add an option to run the program upon login, and prevent the popup message when wifi has not connected yet. Current situation: When computer starts Wifi connection cannot be established right away, it requires a few seconds, however meanwhile a popup warning message of this app appears. That message disappears in a few seconds but it is annoying.

    2. Please add logging option to record connection, disconnection times.

    3. Please add some basic info and documentation to this app. There is no info about developer, about version, about anything.

    App Privacy

The developer, Nova-box , has not provided details about its privacy practices and handling of data to Apple.

    No Details Provided

The developer will be required to provide privacy details when they submit their next app update.
