6 Tools to Turn any Webpage into Desktop Mac App

I love having lots of open browser tabs!
I may have a few hundred open tabs between 5–6 browser windows.

Keeping track of all these tabs is hard, and finding any given tab is even harder. To work around this issue and put my most used web apps to a more distinctive place, I decided it would be nice to have some web pages as regular Mac desktop apps.

I spend virtually the whole day with Gmail, JIRA, Github and Metatask open in a browser since I work on a few development projects but also manage some operations. After converting all these websites to Mac apps my life got a little bit better, at least I can quickly pick these apps from the Dock when I need to.

Below is a list of tools you can use to quickly convert any web page to a real desktop app on Mac.

1. Unite 2 ⭐⭐⭐️⭐⭐

• Website: https://www.bzgapps.com/unite
• Price: Starting at $10 for a single-user license. Has options for family and office. Also available on SetApp
• Highlights: Unite is using a WebKit engine, while most other tools rely on Chrome. Supports notifications (in selected apps), status bar apps.

2. Fluid ⭐⭐

Fluid is free. You can download Fluid for free and create as many Fluid Apps as you like. However, for $5, you can purchase a Fluid License which unlocks a few extra features:

— Pin Fluid Apps to the Mac OS X Status Bar.
— Use Userscripts or Userstyles in your Fluid Apps.
— Use Full Screen mode in your Fluid Apps.

• Highlights: Based on Twitter activity and website this maybe not actively developed anymore.

3. Coherence 6 and Coherence Pro 2.0 ⭐⭐⭐

• Website: https://www.bzgapps.com/coherence6
• Price: $5 and $15 for normal and Pro version.
• Highlights: Coherence is using Google Chrome internally. Pro version has some pretty advanced features like bulk operations, enterprise licenses, tabbed apps, support of Chrome extensions (like 1Password) and profiles.
  Coherence doesn’t support notifications.

4. Web2Desk ⭐⭐

• Website: https://appmaker.xyz/web2desk/
• Price: Free with their branding. $19 without.
• Highlights: It’s an online service, not an app. You can give your page URL, add some parameters and download the newly created app. Supports not only Mac but also Linux and Windows. It uses Nativefier internally to create apps.

5. Nativefier ⭐⭐⭐⭐

• Website: https://github.com/jiahaog/nativefier
• Price: Free
• Highlights: It’s a free, open-source command-line utility.

Nativefier is a command-line tool to easily create a desktop application for any web site with succinct and minimal configuration. Apps are wrapped by Electron in an OS executable (.app, .exe, etc.) for use on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

6. Macify ⭐

• Website: https://www.macify.co/
• Price: “call us”
• Highlights: Macify is not an app but a service, from the same company which sells Unite. They offer to create a Mac app from the website. Created app can be distributed on the Apple App Store or directly as a download.

Зачем делать из сайта приложение

Разработчики большинства сервисов в первую очередь ориентируется на мобильные платформы и не выпускают официальные клиенты для настольных операционных систем.

Пользователи вынуждены использовать веб-версию в отдельной вкладке браузера или искать сторонние клиенты. Последние могут работать нестабильно или вовсе воровать конфиденциальную информацию. Лучше уж превратить нужный сайт в приложение самостоятельно.

Во-первых, используемый сервис не будет занимать отдельную вкладку в браузере.

Во-вторых, его будет быстрее отыскать в доке или строке меню.

В-третьих, при работе с отдельным приложением его легко учитывать в сервисе Экранное время или любом другом трекере активности на компьютере.

Так можно следить за своими посиделками в Instagram, TikTok либо VK. Получится удобно слушать плеер стримингового сервиса, пользоваться переводчиком или конвертером валют.

Как превратить любой сайт в приложение для Mac

Мы уже рассказывали, как сделать приложение в ручном режиме при помощи командной строки, сейчас воспользуемся специальной программой, которая значительно упрощает процесс.

Рекомендуем использовать Unite 3 или Coherence X. Рассмотрим алгоритм действий на примере последнего.

1. Установите и запустите приложение Coherence X.

2. Выберите режим Create single app.

3. Введите название приложения и его адрес в сети.

4. Подберите иконку (есть автоматический поиск или подбор из локальных файлов).

5. При необходимости разрешите авторизацию через учетную запись Google в программе.

6. На следующем шаге укажите браузер, на движке которого будет запускаться приложение.

7. При необходимости можно добавить установленные в браузере расширения, чтобы они были встроены в приложение, например VPN-сервис.

8. На последнем шаге нажмите Create standard app и подождите несколько секунд.

В папке Программы на Mac увидите новое приложение. Можете запускать его и пользоваться как отдельной программой.

Странное приложение

По-моему, постоянная привязка к телефону это абсурд какой-то. Телефон лежит рядом, вай фай периодически просит авторизацию на телефоне и в этот момент невозможно пользоваться приложением. Действительно, телеграм в этом случае в выигрыше.

Разработчиков уволили?

Главные претензии:
1) привязка к телефону. Например, если айфон сел, а надо зайти на макбуке в вотсап, то вы в пролете
2) темная тема отсутствует, а интерфейс сам не в стиле мак ос
3) нет пункта в системном меню «поделиться», жутко выбешивает
4) встроенных звонков тоже нет
Короче, вотсапп отстает от конкурентов на пару лет

Позор.

Огромный минус в том, что приложение не может работать без подключенного к интернету телефона! Это очень-очень не удобно! Приложение не может быть автономным… Telegram в этом плане просто незаменим и очень удобен. Мне не понятно, как у такой компании нет д.с. для того, чтобы написать нормальное десктопное приложение.

Ratings and Reviews

NOT A SERVER!

100% not worth paying for or using/upgrading after Apple removed all the server functionality of this “server” product. It only exists now to see how many suckers they can get to pay for it (in case you didn’t know, all the server functionality came included in the OS to begin with).

Version 5.6 still has the ability to configure the mail and web server, but only if they were previously configured (at least that’s how I interpreted the release notes). So if you happen across this application and want to torture yourself trying to get it to do something useful, you’ll have to downgrade your OS to get a version old enough to include the “real server” applications.

This used to be a great way to incorporate the OS backup capability (one of the main reasons for using a mac) for your servers. It saved me a couple times over the past decade when hardware failed and I could run out and get a new machine and have it up and running in no time with all the old accounts, port settings, etc, etc., but I think Apple got tired of expending energy keeping their UIs up to date as the underlying open source projects changed. Funny, because they keep pumping money into the old (horrid) Web Objects for their own purposes, but totally ignore the needs of their customers. What a sad state of affairs for a company that used to care more about users than hardware profits.

My Dream turned into a nightmare.

In the beginning, April 2017, I bought my MacBook Pro to standardize around the Apple platform. This was my dream. It became the center of the management of my iOS devices . I bought MacOS Server and began my plan structure to manage my email, VPN System and local website access to my personal media on my network using the Apple ecosystem for my family.

Earlier this year, Apple announced MacOS Server’s End Of Life (in all the ways of value that I need). This turned my dream into a nightmare. There is no real value in this product now and Apple has crushed Power Users and real Small Business structures for an easy social colobratives software platform solution. My Household has 23 Apple devices (20 in regular use) and I had planned for more but for what reason now?! I’m extremely disappointed.

Apple, are you going to provide a new solution to the people who have really had your back or are you just in it for profit and polished show? Don’t misunderstand my question, I want to know if the original MacOS Server features will be back and implemented somewhere else? I’d gladly pay for the features to be included or as options in the ecosystem. For all its worth, MacOS Server isn’t perfect but it was what we have or had. I hope your answer is not crickets.

Not Recommended For Live Business Use

On the surface this seems to be a great buy. It provides a GUI front-end to many of the open source underpinnings already found on your Mac OS.

However, the problems I have experienced over the last 4 years is that the updates sometimes break functionality, take away features, or make previous implementations unfeasible. This has led to catastrophies for our organization. Examples in the past, that have required Apple enterprise support have been: disruption of email for days, email logs no longer available (intentionally by Development), firewall troubleshooting because an update broke connectivity, anti-virus & junkmail filters failing to update, etc.

If you base your services offered by this product, beware, because it seems as if Apple may not do much vetting in business environments — or they have a hard time ensuring all the open source components are compatible with their OS. Because the features change so much, documentation is often sketchy & outdated. These are big problems that can sometimes requires hours, or even days of troubleshooting & re-configuration, to get this app working after a patch. Please put that troubleshooting time into your cost analysis when you buy a $20 server.
