After installation of update KB2670838 Win 7 keeps crashing to blue screen.
I currently have laptop set to automatic download and installation of windows updates. Update KB2670838 causes system crash whenever Internet Explorer Version 9 is running. I restored the laptop to a previous date using system restore and again allowed the update to install again. Getting the same results as previous installation of the update. I uninstalled the update using Add/Remove programs and laptop seems stable.
I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit edition Serv pack 1 on HP DV7 laptop I7 processor and 16GB ram.
I understand that KB2670838 is currently set as an optional update so it should not be downloaded or installed automatically. [emphasis mine]
And therein lies the rub, my friend.
Allow me to quote the OP in this thread.
I currently have laptop set to automatic download and installation of windows updates. Update KB2670838 causes system crash. [emphasis mine again]
IOW, it would appear that Automatic Updates is downloading/installing KB2670838 (at least as long as AU’s set to the default Automatic setting).
AU’s set to Notify Only here so I was able to hide it before AU offered it.
[PS: Running Fix It 50202 in Aggressive mode will «flush» the Download folder.]

Windows Update KB2670838 may affect Windows Live Mail on Windows 7
On 26 February, an update called a platform update was released through Windows Update to coincide with the release of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7. IE10 requires this update, which ‘improves the features and performance’ of a number of display components. Some users have found that the update affects the display of Windows Live Mail. Other problems ranging from blank screen in Resource Manager to Blue Screen of Death have been reported by users who found that the problem went away if the update was uninstalled.
Here is one user’s screenshot:
If you are seeing this problem with Windows Live Mail, the first thing to do is to check with your graphics card/computer manufacturer for updated display drivers. If you’re already using the latest, you may have to uninstall the update until a remedy is found. To do so, open Windows Update in Control Panel and click on Installed updates in the bottom left-hand corner. Locate the update, select it and click Uninstall. If this update was installed along with IE10, IE10 will also be uninstalled. If you have automatic updates configured, you should hide the update so it doesn’t install again.
It might be helpful to the product team if those affected posted a reply to this thread explaining the symptoms and giving the make and model of their computer and its graphics card.
KB 2670838 — The EVIL UPDATE
Microsoft:
Why don’t you fix the errors caused by KB 2670838 instead of having my computer re-install it as part of IE 10 without giving me any warning that it was going to do that?
This update has two effects on my system*; 1. For whatever reason, it turns the lower taskbar turquoise, 2. Explorer 9 or 10 and Chrome 25 get a 60 delay in information typed into them with internet speeds reminiscent of dial-up, while Firefox 19 ceases to function at all; The internet becomes essentially non-usable.
I wasted an entire day on this two weeks ago including an hour on the phone with one of your technicians when it was first installed. He had no idea what the problem was and I eventually gave up and uninstalled it. My problems ceased immediately upon its removal.
I had to go to an internet forum to learn that many people had these problems and how to set my updates to not automatically be installed. That proved to be no help as when installing IE10 this EVIL UPDATE (KB 2670838) just re-appeared again with no notice in your description that this might happen. Now I guess I will never install an update again since you provide no clues as to what it could do.
* My system info:
HP Envy, Windows 7 Home Premium, two screens attached using an HP usb notebook port replicator. Buy the way, this HP port replicator is a piece of garbage that has to be rebooted (the replicator — not the PC) as it freezes once or twice a day. But I thinks that’s on HP — not you.
