Mbox 2 pro driver mac os catalina

Question: Q: Why isn’t my digidesign Mbox 2 not working with Sierra os update?

I have a 2011 series iMac. I had protools 10 on the computer and my digidesign mbox 2 plugged up as well. Everything was working fine until I updated my Operating System to the latest Os, Sierra. After the upgrade, my protools will not open and my mbox 2 driver will not connect. How can I fix this problem? I was told to downgrade my software to a later os but I’m not sure on how to do it or which Os to get. Is this something I could bring to apples attention and have them do for me? Or can I do it myself?

Thanks for posting on the Apple Support Communities. I see that your Mbox 2 and the Pro Tools software will not work after updating to macOS Sierra. I know it is important to be able to use Pro Tools and the Mbox 2 with your Mac. I will be happy to provide some direction.

You mention that you were told to downgrade your software. This might be what you need. According to the developer website of Pro Tools, version 10 supports OS X up to OS X 10.7.4. This sounds like what you had before you updated. I found this information here: Pro Tools 10 System Requirements

If you want to revert back to OS X 10.7.4, you can follow the steps on the following article. Though a Time Machine back up from before you upgraded to macOS Sierra is required.

Hope this helps.

Have a great day!

As per my previous reply here Re: Mac Oparating system, Protools and other program compatibility which answered a very similar question, ProTools 10 is only compatible with older versions of OS X. See this official Avid webpage for a list of what version of ProTools is compatible with what version os OS X — http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Compatibility/Pro-Tools-Operating-Syste m-Compatibility-Chart

As per that Avid webpage you would need to be running ProTools 12.6 or higher in order to be compatible with Sierra. Whilst this webpage only mentions Sierra 10.12.1 I think you can safely assume that Sierra 10.12.2 and 10.12.3 should also work with ProTools 12.6 or higher.

Even if hypothetically you managed to get drivers for the Mbox2 working ProTools 12 does not support it as support for the Mbox2 ended with ProTools 11.

Note: This is not Apple’s fault, IT products are always being replaced and made obsolete you should also note that the MBox2 is not compatible with Windows 10 either.

Therefore whilst you could upgrade to ProTools 12.6 or newer to resolve your software problem you are also going to need to buy a new replacement audio interface. Or as indicated by darren.s you would have to revert to an older version of OS X. You could setup two Mac boot drives so that you could switch between the old version and Sierra.

Note: New Macs typically cannot run older versions of OS X so if you replace your Mac this will no longer be an option.

Thanks John! So to clarify, my 2011 iMac is considered a «newer Mac» which means I would not be able to downgrade to a different Os system? Is that what you’re saying?

Actually a 2011 iMac is now six years old and therefore not considered a new Mac. I don’t have your Macs full specs but I believe it is capable of running Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and as you have currently versions all the way up to Sierra 10.12.3.

So you can obviously downgrade back to the version you were on prior to Sierra and in theory if you have the installers all the way back to Snow Leopard.

A new Mac as an example would be the 2016 MacBook Pro which can only run Sierra and cannot be downgraded to older versions because it never existed prior to Sierra being released.

Go from Sierra to Yosemite to El Capitan to Maverick? To mountain lion.

There are two main approaches for downgrading your version of OS X but one of them definitely depends on your having a Time Machine backup made prior to upgrading.

Method 1 — The Time Machine method

  • Boot from the Recovery partition as per About macOS Recovery — Apple Support
  • Select the first option i.e. Restore from Time Machine Backup
  • Tell Time Machine to restore your Mac from a date/time that predates installing Sierra as per OS X Yosemite: Recover your entire system this is likely to take a very long time, another article describing this approach is here http://www.imore.com/how-downgrade-macos-sierra-back-os-x-el-capitan

Warning! When you restore your Mac in the above way it is almost certainly going to delete all the changes and new stuff you have done since that backup, you therefore might want to separately backup important stuff first. (Not via Time Machine.)

Driver software that makes sure your Mbox 2 works with your Mac

The Mbox 2 Driver software ensures that your system has all the software components required by the Mbox 2 device to connect to the software component of your digital audio workstation (DAW).

For your convenience, Mbox 2 Driver comes with a built-in installer that automatically integrates the required support files within your system. However, the user must confirm the installation location.

In addition, for the installer to complete the deployment process, all other applications must be closed, and you must restart your computer. Note that the Mbox 2 Driver installer can also deal with these tasks on its own.

Manually uninstall the Mbox 2 software components if necessary

After the installation process is complete, you will be able to see in your Applications folder a Digidesign directory that includes the license agreement. However, the driver does not come with an uninstaller.

If you need to remove the Mbox 2 Driver software from your system, you need to navigate to various directories in your system or user’s library and manually delete specific files. You can find details about the items you need to remove on the developer’s website.

To conclude, Mbox 2 Driver offers you the possibility to connect the Mbox 2 device to your Mac and have it work with a third party audio processing software to record audio content and produce various effects.

I need some help about mbox 2 on mavericks

rpstudio

I have a system working PERFECTLY with this configuration:

Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3
i5 Core Duo 3.30
Video GT430 (1gb)
HD 500gb (Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
HD 1tb (only for files/data)
Mbox 2 (running great with pro tools 9 and logic 9)

NOW, I bought another HD (2tb) and decided to install the Mavericks into this. And my Mbox 2 isn’t working properly. When I run the driver, it seems to be nice, and audio feature really is great. But I have NO MIDI. I checked on «audio midi setup» and the mbox is there, but kind of «hidden», got it. I tried to remove and reinstall and nothing happens.

Just for the records, I tried to disconnect and reconnect again the usb cable, then it APPEARS in «audio midi setup». Then the MIDI starts running, but with NO AUDIO. Then I restart the computer, and the audio COMES BACK and the midi STOPS AGAIN.

So, I am confused because when I have audio, I have NO MIDI, and when I have midi, I have NO AUDIO. I am really getting mad about this, because in my SL, it runs PERFECTLY. I really don’t understand why it is not running on Mavericks.

BTW, just for the records. A friend of mine (who has an older AMD Hackintosh) can run his Mbox 2 on his mavericks, and it works great there. I really don’t understand why it is being a painful in my case.

If someone can help me, I will appreciate a lot.

How To Get A Digidesign MBox2 with Pro Tools 12.4HD Working on Mac OS 10.10 — Yosemite

Remember one of these? This was my first foray in to using Pro Tools at home — I had Pro Tools 7LE with a DVTK, MBox2 running on Windows XP. My wife inherited this interface a long time ago, and it’s given unfaltering service on her Windows machine, along with a nice pair of Genelecs (perks of being married to a sound engineer!)

Wrong Place, Wrong Time

When it comes to a Bank Holiday weekend, I generally make sure I have all the kit I’d need to continue with a project, with me back at home.

Due to a variety of circumstances falling at once, I found myself without my trusty MOTU Ultralite Hybrid Mk3 and Grado Headphones, when the latest and final episode of «Plebs» season 3 landed in my inbox late Friday night, and needed to be sorted and forwarded to the foley stage by Saturday morning.

So, I looked in to using my wife’s MBox2 and Genelecs with my Pro Tools 12.4HD on my MacBook Pro.

It’s A Trap!

If you put MBox2 Yosemite Drivers into your favourite search engine, the first result will direct you to Avid’s website —

10.3.9 (Oct 10, 2014)

Fixed: Unplugging the Mbox 2 while streaming audio from iTunes could disable allUSB ports until restarting the computer

Fixed: Core Audio stops working when changing client apps of iTunes Stations

Support for Pro Tools 10.3.3 – 11.x

Support for Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)

Support for Mac OS X 10.9-10.9.4 (Mavericks) — note that uninstalling requires manually deleting files

Pro Tools 10 supported with 10.8 (Mountain Lion) only

Mac OS X 10.9, 10.9.2 and 10.9.3 requires Pro Tools 11.0.3 — 11.2

Mac OS X 10.9.4 requires Pro Tools 11.2.1

Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite not supported

Tested with Avid-qualified Apple computers

Core 2 Duo Macs not supported — known issue

The more experienced among us (myself included) would read «Yosemite not supported» and come to the conclusion that «not supported» is not the same as «will not work» usually, and install 10.3.9 regardless.

Needless to say, this time, it really did mean «will not work».

Uninstalling Requires Manually Deleting Files

A quick trawl round the DUC found that I’m not the first one to fall in to this trap. I thought I’d share with the Pro Tools Expert community how I got round it, and got a working MBox2 again.

Step 1 — Find the following files and delete them —
