Ok so 2 things that I had to do to get this sucker to work. First I had to use DGvoodoo 2 direct X emulation and Second I had to use the command line /gosnojoystick.
Now I am wondering if there is a way to fix this joystick issue. I have been scanning through .DLL’s with HxD and see that dinput may be the issue. Now if there was a way to emulate older dinput.dll methods I think it would fix the problem.
That’s awful, I’m glad I didn’t encounter that error. Could it be they have different versions of the game? From my understanding MekTek did attempt to modernise the game a little bit for compatibility purposes when they released their freeware version, although performance is still lacking without dgVoodoo making it a must. But yeah I’m on Windows10 and it works, would there be a way to check what’s different on my system to see if it would help find a solution for others?
I am using the MekTek MP3.1 , if that helps. Win7 compatability mode. Alexandros, what are you using?
Mektek 3.1 here too, tried straight from CD and patching manually, tried every known thing.
You also have to remember that not every computer speaks the same language even if they are the same hardware. Mechwarrior 3 runs perfectly fine though.

Im having major issues getting this to work on my PC. Im sure It boils down to voodoo 2 and I have it; however, every time i tempt to use it i get the error: EXCEPTION : Attempt to read from NULL in DDRAW! (+0x178E8)
And when I dont i get the error: Your current hardware or driver setup is not compatable with MechWarrior 4.
Anyone have any ideas? Im sure If someone can help me figure out Voodoo ill have the game running. Been working on this for about 8 hours now Q.Q

ok first you need to setup dgvoodoo2.53 to emulate an old dx 7 card, to do so open the DGvoodoo2 folder, MS folder, and copy D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll and drop it to the root folder of MW4. Now copy DGvoodoosetupo and drop that into the root of MW4. Run dgvoodoo setup, from there it’s self explanitory, game does play nice with widescreen so no aspect fixes are needed.
Once you set it up, now the real pain comes in. You have to try and run Autoconfig.exe to configure the gpu. It will take many attempts befpore it decides to grace you with it’s GUI. Have task manager open and kill the hanging autoconfigs before you try again. What worked for me, is not using any compatibility settings nor using run as admin, I just kept trying to run it and finally it ran.
Once you do this, you then need to make a desktopo shortcut of MW4.exe. Now first try to run the game, if it hangs or only shows a black screen you have to use this command line argument in the desktop shortcut’s properties and add to the end of the path in the Target box ( outside the quotes. ( exactly as typed ) /gosNoJoystick
Example: «C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\MechWarrior Mercenaries\MW4.exe» /gosNoJoystick
try again, this time a EULA should pop up, hit accept and boom. If not, and you are running windows 10, you need to enable legacy components in control panel/ programs and features/ turn windows features on or off/ Legacy Components/ direct play.
and there you go.
The only thing here I have not currently done is placing the dgvoodoosetup.exe direcly into the folder. Acording to the videos I was following it only needed to be in a folder and then run. I will try this when I get home.
The funny thing is, coping and pasting the files to my laptop worked so im not entirely sure why. Will update in a few hours.
EDIT: Tried tossing the files into the folder and still gives the asme error. Laptop works but my main computer didnt. followed the instructions above and it didnt work. Not sure what all I need to do to get the thing to stop saying it cant read null

Im probally getting lost here. I dont know what im actually doing or what I need to be doing to make this work. As soon as DDRaw.dll is moved over i get the error above on the autoconfig and game.

First of all, love your username. AC4 is one of my all time fav games.
Now then, I use a mouse and keyboard for my game. So I don’t know anything about modifying Dll’s to get a controller working. That said, if I you do manage to get this working, please post a reply here. I know your not the only one having this issue.
Dx emulation? Do explain cause I am stuck!
I had no trouble getting the game to run and everything, but my sidewinder force feedback doesn’t work with it for some reason. It shows up in the game controls menu but doesn’t work. 🙁
This is because the game uses an old directX HID device access method called Dinput.dll, windows 7 and up use Xinput. So unless someone can figure out a way to modify what MW4 calls out to, possibly with a .dll injector/ emulator of some sort, you cannot use joysticks or any controller for that matter.
Actually, I got it to work! I have no idea what I did though. I did not download anything.
I had read something about an xbox 360 controller working, so I plugged mine in. And it sort of worked. I then unplugged it (while in game) and went to the options menu, controls, and changed to sidewinder force feedback. and BAM it started working. I do have compatability set to windows 7, but I’m not sure that makes a difference.
Enjoying the campaign! Now, if I could only get Mechwarrior 3 to work right 😉

Majority of users can’t get the game to run without disabling joystick input( /gosnojoy shortcut command )
So if you where able to run the game without even having to use this command then you can use joysticks, because again, the game CTD’s when it launches due to how it’s detecting input devices.
Now I am also curious, what are your hardware specs? I have a hunch as to why it works for you.
I did try that /gosnojoy, but it didn’t work either.
AMD Phenom II 965
16GB Ram
MSI Gaming 970 mobo
2 x MSI Twin Frozr radeon 7900 series
What’s your hunch?

/gosnojoystick sorry, also if it still doesn’t work then you need DGVOODOO 2.5 to emulate direct X 6.

That is not the reason, modern Windows also has dinput, xinput is just for controllers licenced to use the Xbox controller schemes (or controllers that emulate this without permission, like DS4Windows app can have your Sony DualShock4 controller work as one) so dinput serves a use for everything else. It’s just an old standard that still functions fine, it’s not an obsolete one.
Being dinput licenced these days would mean conforming to strict standards and therefor not have the ability for additional axis/inputs that the Xbox One controller doesn’t have (like the DualShock4 has touch and motion control axis which if used as an emulated dinput device either do nothing or are custom mapped to one of the other standard functions of the controller or the keyboard/mouse if the game can accept input from different devices). Most all joysticks, old and new alike, are dinput based unless they also had Xbox console editions (the PS versions wouldn’t be dinput either unless they were otherwise identical and the maker included a mode switch). My joystick is dinput (a Thrustmaster T.16000M) and it works fine in this game (and in new games meant to be used with joysticks too, they all support dinput) so his problems stem from elsewhere.
I’m on Windows 10 with dgVoodoo 2.53 too, I’m glad I didn’t have to use this nojoystick command you guys are talking about as the game is pure joy with a joystick, I doubt I’d stick with it without one, it’s more fun than any space/flight sim as far as I’m concerned, I wish there were more ground based games that controlled so fluidly with a joystick.
A basic hint is to usually disconnect other controllers as they can cause conflicts or a game may only recognize the one it perceives as first etc. Some newer games don’t have a problem because they accept and map input from any and all devices or recognize the device that fits them and ignore the others but I often have to disable my joystick from the device manager (I can’t bother going to the back of my PC for the cables) in order to use my gamepad or keep my wireless gamepad unpowered (so not present for the PC) to use my joystick.
Someone should sticky a topic where the first post has legit links to the game and dgVoodoo and basic instructions for newcomers, you don’t know how long it took me to find all this out manually, it was basically a process of years as I discovered dgVoodoo when troubleshooting other games in the past so it helped me knowing of it for MW4, it took a long while to even discover all the different versions and sequels of MW before settling on this once freeware MekTek version of MW4: Mercs as the best choice, etc, it would be nice to have it all central for people going through the same things now, hopefully it will show in relevant google searches also.
But yeah dgVoodoo is godlike, I spent an hour the other day replying to every performance/error/whatever question over SWAT3 on modern OS in the GOG forums just telling people to get this to solve everything, it should be common knowledge for old school gamers!
