Visual Studio 6 Windows Common Controls 6.0 (sp6) Windows 7, 64 bit

I was asked to help work on a legacy vb6 application for someone, so I decided to toss Visual Studio 6 on my Windows 7 x64 laptop following this guide.

It installed fine, and from I can see everything is working except for Microsoft Windows Common Controls 6.0 (sp6). Microsoft Windows Common Controls-2 6.0 (sp6), Microsoft Windows Common Controls 5.0 (sp2), etc. all work just fine. However, when I try to add the Microsoft Windows Common Controls 6.0 (sp6) component I get the error:

I have tried registering/un-registering/re-registering MXCOMCTL.OCX, MSCOMCT2.OCX, msdatsrc.tlb all with no success. I have also uninstalled a known security update that may have caused issues with Windows Common Controls. I have removed IE11, even though reports state IE11 will not cause issues with MSCOMCTL.OCX the way IE10 did.

I run VB6.EXE in Windows XP SP3 Compatibility mode. With Disable visual themes, Disable desktop composition, and Disable display scaling on high DPI settings. As well as run it as administrator.

I have also attempted to open a previous project that utilizes this control, and it fails during load with the same «blank» error as in the screen shot with the following in the generated error log:

Line 35: Class MSComctlLib.ListView of control lvData was not a loaded control class. Line 223: Class MSComctlLib.StatusBar of control Stat was not a loaded control class.

So that tells me it isn’t a version issue within the .vbp like some suggest (as it happens with new, blank projects as well).

I am at wits end. Apparently people have gotten both VB6 and Windows 7 x64 to work properly (with Windows Common Controls) but NOTHING I have tried alleviates my problem. I am hoping someone here may have run into this, or have some ideas as to what is going on.

There are some VB6 downloads available on the Microsoft support site but do they fix my Excel VBA problem? Will they work in Windows 10? «

I downloaded the first patch, but I get a message that the patch is already on my machine.

The «fix it for me» is an endless list of non clear issues. couldn’t find these problem there.

Anyway, within the VBA reference dialog, I see the missing file is MSCOMCT2.ocx .

I searched and the file is simply not on the machine.

I’m looking to add the Microsoft Time and Date Picker Control in Excel 2016, as was possible in earlier versions. In Office 2013, you had to download and register the Microsoft Windows Common Controls 6.0 (SP6) to access this feature, but now I can’t find it anywhere. Several places have links to it that all seem to be broken.

Any suggestions as to where to find these controls, or is there an alternative way to add a pop-up calendar to a cell in Excel?

The below worked for me on 64 bit windows 8.1. I am using office 365.

1. Download VisualBasic6-KB896559-v1-ENU.exe from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10019

3. Open cmd as administrator

Thank you very much! This worked for me with the following configuration:
office 2016, Win 7 64 Bit

Additionally I copied the file in system32 directory, then it worked correct.

I got the failure by transmitting the document from office 2010 to 2016.

I’m maybe having the same issue as above. You redirected to a similar question/answer, but that link seems to only address the missing control in Windows 10, Office 2010 .

My issue is with Windows 10 using Office 2016. When trying to insert controls in Excel, the «Microsoft Windows Common Controls 2.6.0 (sp6)» seem not to be available. Specifically, I’m looking for «Microsoft Date and Time Picker Control 6.0 (SP6)» for inserting drop-down calendars.

If you meet any issues, I suggest you open a new thread in this forum. Please don’t follow up in the old one.
