The FTDI Driver install is optional for OSX Yosemite 10.10, but some users have required this install.
Open the .dmg file to see the one additional package files that needs to be installed: the FTDI USB Serial Driver. To install the packages, they will need to be opened by control-click* the icon and select вЂOpen’. Full instructions for opening a downloaded file can be found on the Apple site.
*Control-Click is the same as вЂright mouse button click’
Open the FTDI USB .dmg file to view the two packages inside. Open the package labeled “10_4_10_5_10_6_10_7” by control-clicking on the icon and selecting Open from the drop-down menu. This will bypass the security permissions and open the package.

Running Mission Planner on OSX
Hi guys, first post here, my APM mega 2.5 and associated gear is in the mail, and Im just trying to set up my computer to use it in the field.
I have a 2011 macbook air, and would ideally love to run mission planner natively in osx. I did some research, and stumbled across this post:
I did exactly what the thread suggested, i downloaded mono, installed it, then downloaded the latest version of mission planner. I opened up terminal and the program starts to load, then it crashes. I am assuming this is because I am running the latest mountain lion and not lion. Anyone got a workaround?
My backup plan was to install XP on bootcamp, and then I discovered you need to run windows 7 on bootcamp, xp wont load. So then I tried to install Ubuntu, but there is no easy way of installing ubuntu on osx either. Anyone got any ideas on how to get this software working? I have about 3 days before my package arrives, (well supposidly, it only left San Diego today and is bound for Australia).

I personally use windows 10 (you can download the ISO for free from microsoft) via Oracle’s Virtual Box which is also free. It runs Mission Planner 1.3.37 like a dream.
If needed, google how you can do the following:
— Download windows ISO
— Install Windows to your virtual machine
— Once operating in the windows virtual machine, download the Mission Planner msi to your new virtual machine
The other thing that you could try is MavProxy.
It is written in Python so it should run natively on the Mac.
I haven’t tried to run mission planner yet however I use VirtualBox to run my Windows 7 PC on my Mac Air. VirtualBox is free and easy to install and run. With the extensions it supports USB2 and I have not had any problems with running communications programs that use USB.
I use it to run all my LAN management programs when I am mobile so I do not have to carry my larger work PC around with me.
I will be downloading and running mission planner soon and will run it in my W7 VM when I get my APM so I can update you on how it goes.
Please buy a copy of Windows 7 from a PC build store like PLE that will sell you an OEM version. It is only $120.00 or so it is not worth trying to use a pirated copy. You don’t need the full retail version.

How to Run Mission Planner on Mac
Option 1: Use Parallels
Parallels is the fastest, easiest, and most powerful option to run Windows on your Mac. Data can be shared between Mac and Windows and switching between the two is as simple as switching screens. Run it On Mac recommends Parallels as the #1 best way to run Mission Planner on your Mac desktop or laptop.
Pros: Very Cost-Effective; Easily transfer files; Easily switch between Windows & Mac.
Cons: May see a slight decrease in performance; Cost varies from $50-80 for a personal license.
Option 2: Use Bootcamp
Boot Camp is a boot utility included with most Apple desktop and laptop products that allows users to install a Windows operating system alongside the native macOS/OS X operating system. Using Bootcamp is a relatively technical process and should probably only be undertaken by someone who understands the process.
Pros: Free; Good option if you need high performance or are using an older machine.
Cons: Switching between operating systems requires a restart; difficult, technical installation process.

On Windows (Recommended)
1. Install software
Currently, Mission Planner needs:
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.1
- Microsoft .NET standard 2.0
Visual Studio Community
The recommended way to compile Mission Planner is through Visual Studio. You could do it with Visual Studio Community (version 16.9 or newer to include .NET standard 2.0) : Visual Studio Download page. Visual Studio suite is quite complet and comes with Git support. On installation phase, please install support for :
- ASP.NET and web development
- .NET Desktop Developement
- Desktop development with C++
- Universal Windows Platform deveopment
- Mobile development with .NET
- Visual Studio extension development
- .NET Core cross-platofrm developemnt
Currently VSCode with C# plugin is able to parse the code but cannot build.
If you get Visual Studio Community, you should be able to use Git from the IDE. Just clone https://github.com/ArduPilot/MissionPlanner.git to get the full code.
In case you didn’t install an IDE, you will need to manually install Git. Please follow instruction in https://ardupilot.org/dev/docs/where-to-get-the-code.html#downloading-the-code-using-git
To build the code:
- Open MissionPlanner.sln with Visual Studio
- Compile just the MissionPlanner project
On other systems
Building Mission Planner on other systems isn’t support currently.
Launching Mission Planner on other system
Mission Planner is available for Android via the Play Store. Mission Planner can be used with Mono on Linux systems. Be aware that not all functions are available on Linux. Native MacOS and iOS support is experimental and not recommended for inexperienced users. For MacOS users it is recommended to use Mission Planner for Windows via Boot Camp or Parallels (or equivalent).
Those instructions were tested on Ubuntu 18.04. Please install Mono, either :
- sudo apt install mono-runtime libmono-system-windows-forms4.0-cil libmono-system-core4.0-cil libmono-winforms4.0-cil libmono-corlib4.0-cil libmono-system-management4.0-cil libmono-system-xml-linq4.0-cil
- sudo apt install mono-complete
- Get the lastest zipped version of Mission Planner here : https://firmware.ardupilot.org/Tools/MissionPlanner/MissionPlanner-latest.zip
- Unzip in the directory you want
- Go into the directory
- run with mono MissionPlanner.exe
You can debug Mission Planner on Mono with MONO_LOG_LEVEL=debug mono MissionPlanner.exe
