- Hyper-fast (free-spin) mode — near-frictionless spinning, letting you fly through long documents and web pages.
Switch modes manually
You can also manually switch between modes by pressing the mode shift button.
By default, mode shift is assigned to the button on top of the mouse. Use the Logitech Options Software, to disable SmartShift if you prefer to stay in a single scrolling mode and shift manually. You can also adjust the SmartShift sensitivity, which will change the speed required to automatically shift into free spinning.

MX Master 3 Linux Support
The MX Master 3 is advertised as supporting LInux (for instance, on the box) but some features seem to require the Logitech Options software for which I do not see a Linux option. It seems odd to me to advertise Linux support and then have support software that’s only available on Windows and MacOS. Is there an alternative?
Comments
Thank you for reaching Logitech! Apologies for not providing a prompt response.
Regarding the Logitech Options Software, apparently there are still no available release that will be compatible with Linux OS. We have already raised this concern to our team. We cannot promise that it will be implemented as soon as possible, but allow us to have this post forwarded and rest-assured that we will try our best to have it considered.
If you have further inquiry, please do not hesitate to reach back to us or contact our support team for direct assistance.
+1 MX master 3 and MX keys labels as perfect to Code but (half of us work on linux workstations)
logitec please provide full support for the big linux dist, at list for product hows market is heavy use of linux OS
+1. If you say these are for developers but you don’t support Linux you are wrong. Developers need Linux support. Flow and Options. I have told several people that these are not devices for developers because they don’t support the operating systems that developers use. I will continue to correct your misinformation until you either stop saying «for developers» or fully support Linux.
Love the devices, but please keep your promise and ACTUALLY support developers. Make Flow for Linux!
+1 I can even understand, that some company makes a decision to not support some product even if I don’t agree with the decision itself but state, that something is supported and then completely ignore it in support, documentation and with some of the declared features not working is beyond, what I expected from such a respectful company like Logitech. This is, what I take as, politely expressed, very unfair.
+1 Any update on this? I just got this mouse on the premise that it had Linux support, only to find out that — outside of some very basic functionality — this wasn’t the case. Marketing this device as «for coders» and *explicitly* stating that it’s Linux-compatible seems a little deceptive to me.
Another +1 for proper Linux support. Appreciate the level of functionality that is there out of the box. but the same level of support that exists for Windows and macOS was expected when it was advertised as «Windows | Mac | Linux» on the box.
I’d love to see this!
+1 just bought this thinking it would at least have a community-made app for tweaking it, but no, nothing.
Should have checked first.
Havig product description stating MX Keys supports Linux «MX Keys works with Windows, Mac, Linux®1 iOS and Android™ operating systems.» and finally reading the required Logitech Flow-enabled mouse and Logitech Options software is supported on Windows and Mac only is simply a marketing lie.
How can it be possible to advise a product for coding in 2020 and no have it Linux compatible ! Wake up Logitech ! And I am a swiss citizen supposed to be proud of this company.
Nowhere dit it say on Best Buy’s website or the Logitech Mx 3 master box that this wasn’t really supported to work on Linux. I bought this to be able to use the “customization options.” My mx3 is supposed to be delivered Monday 6/8. I wish I would have found this post 2 days ago, would have saved me 100 bucks. Seems like false advertising to me.. I’ll give piper a try but likely going to return this for something that gives actual support.
Agree on the fake marketing part.
There’s logiops :
I do use Logiops and I appreciate it, but Logiops doesn’t enable Flow compatibility which is what I really wanted the mouse for.
@Bruce: ok didn’t know that. Synergy works though but looking at the price of those devices I understand your disappointment.
@Bruce: if you haven’t heard of it, you might have a look at barrier
Any update on Linux? Still hope that they’ll release Options software soon but it looks like dead end. No updates from team. Looks like nobody in management is interested in launching this product for Linux — based systems.
The very misleading advertising is an ugly stain on the reputation of Logitech. If there is no intention to release the software, these very misleading statements should be removed from Logitech’s advertising.
Actually one should settle a class action lawsuit for all the people who got betrayed by false advertising.
. no really, Logitech.
You should fix this. That is just not only a little badie thats actually really bad, to promote a mouse to work in linux and than you miss the features the mouse promotes itself with.
And its not like its just a mouse for 20 bucks people, we talk about real money (for a mouse . ) the same goes for the mx keys and mx craft keyboards.
OPTIMAL FOR CODING. ya. f. what? What do you think coders code on?
On a windows bugbox?
Or do you think all coders can effort shiny apple hardware? wrong. many could actually, but why should you bring your own apple machine when you work for a webdevelopment company where everything is linux only, .
It comes to ones mind, that you actually are not interested in your customers, and like to play bad jokes on us.
I want to hear a definitive statement that you will fix this, and I would love to know WHEN for petes sake you will fix this.
If I buy a mouse that says » ‘FLOW’ technology, seamlessly go with your mouse from one desktop to another».
and the box says its ok for linux EVERYBODY would expect that darn 100somethingBucks-mouse to work in linux and offer its FLOW functionality also for LINUX .
I really hope you understand what that means, because people are begging you for this since about a year, and nothing is happening except some daemon that you can configure with a crappy json file.
if you ask me that should not be the deal for 100bucks plus HID peripherals. thank you.
THANK YOU !
I’ve not owned a logitech product since around 2000.
Today I’ve found the MX Master 3 on a local retailer and boutght it as I thougt that the additional functions are great and on its box it states that works on Linux.
When connected to my linux computer it works, but misses all the additional functions as there is no version of the logitech software.
I am very disappointed, logitech always had good products at high prices, and I wanted the additional functions on my linux PC. If logitech continues to not support the linux users, I am sure that my next input device will not be from this brand and will go to a cheaper one as there are no benefits from getting logitech as linux user.

Usage
The mouse should work with no special configuration if using the unified receiver USB dongle. Plug in the dongle, then press the connect button on the mouse.
To use Bluetooth, change the channel on the bottom of the mouse, and click the connect button. Now, search for the mouse with a bluetooth manager of your choice and pair. In future it should connect as soon as you switch to that channel when your bluetooth is active. If you have problems with the mouse not showing when scanning, see Bluetooth LE device does not show up in scan
The mouse exists in 3 versions:
The functionalities are the same.
Mappings for extra buttons
Install logiops AUR or logiops-git AUR to customize mouse settings:
- Easy programmable buttons.
- DPI selection.
- Smartshift (hyperfast and click-to-click wheel mode).
- HiresScroll.
- Gestures.
It is possible to use just #Xbindkeys and tweak the desktop shortcuts to obtain some customization, but with some caveats (look notes below).
Logiops
It can be executed as application via command line by running
Or as a service by systemd.
The configuration lives in /etc/logid.cfg . But the package comes with no configuration. One needs to create this specifying the name of the device to be used. To obtain that name launching from cli
The name of the detected device is printed.
Then you can create the configuration file.
Examples
This minimal configuration file simply makes each button work as a normal mouse button, ignoring gestures. It will allow the extra buttons to be used normally, such as in games and by Xbindkeys (see below).
For a more fully-featured configuration, see the example config or this one:
Xbindkeys
List of events sent by mouse:
Physical action | detected as | With minimal logid config above |
---|---|---|
Left button | button 1 | button 1 |
Press to wheel | button 2 | button 2 |
Right button | button 3 | button 3 |
Scroll wheel up | button 4 | button 4 |
Scroll wheel down | button 5 | button 5 |
Scroll hor_wheel right (up) | button 6 | button 6 |
Scroll hor_wheel left (down) | button 7 | button 7 |
Side-bottom button | button 8 | button 8 |
Side-top button | button 9 | button 9 |
Thumb button | Ctrl+Alt+Tab | button 10 |
Press «i» button under wheel | Not detected by xbindkeys | button 11 |
- It is impossible to move mouse cursor while thumb button is pressed, but possible to use any other actions (pressing buttons and scrolling wheels). Ctrl+Alt+Tab event is sent only after releasing thumb button. Using logid to reassign this button removes this limitation.
- If you wish, you can get experience of thumb button like in Windows or Mac. In kde go to System settings → Shortcuts → Global Shortcuts → KWin → Show all windows from all desktops. It is set to ctrl+f10 by default. Set ctrl+alt+tab for this action and apply settings.
- «I» button under wheel is undetectable in Linux by default, but works as switching wheel between free and rattle mode. With logid it can be reassigned for use.
- Logitech gestures (moving mouse up/down/left/right while thumb pressed) are not detected in Linux, but are implemented in software by logid.
The vertical wheel and the two buttons near it should work right away, however the thumb button requires some special treatment, and you might want to remap the rest.
To remap the buttons of the mouse you can use the packages xbindkeys and xautomation .
xbindkeys will redirect the buttons and xte (which is included in xautomation) will execute the custom key presses. To do so, create a config file named .xbindkeysrc in your home directory.
Here is a sample configuration for the vertical scroll wheel and the two buttons near it:
If using PulseAudio (more info here):
If you prefer to get a visual feedback on how the volume level changes you could use the following lines instead (Tested in GNOME and KDE)
Now start xbindkeys , preferably add that to the autostart list of your desktop environment.
The thumb button is special. With the Logitech software available for Windows and Mac, you would be able to map up to 5 actions to it: by pressing the button or by pressing the button and moving the mouse in one of four directions. As of November 2015, there is no way to enable the direction feature using Arch.
If you look at the keys the button triggers you will notice that it sends a series of keys, confusing xbindkeys. You need to add a short sleep here so xbindkeys will only react on the first keys send so we can at least map one action to it:
Remember that all changes to
/.xbindkeysrc require a restart of the xbindkeys process:
Power
Battery status can be read as described on Logitech Unifying Receiver. e.g. Solaar ( solaar ) has a system tray utility.
Smart shift
Smart shift is where the scroll wheel switches from click-to-click to smooth scrolling automatically, based on the speed at which it is being spun.
Logiops
Any mouse button can be assigned to switch between modes. The default settings are with the smart-shift threshold around 20 and the top button (just below the wheel) used to toggle between always-smooth and smart-shift (clicky when scrolling slowly only). Increasing the threshold number requires the wheel to be spun faster before it will switch into smooth-scrolling mode.
To reproduce the default settings, use this snippet in the config file as shown above:
Change the threshold or use a different button (cid) as needed.
Solaar
Instead of logid, Solaar can also be used to change the sensitivity of changing the mouse wheel mode (between hyperfast and click-to-click), install solaar . A slider appears that can be set somewhere between 0 and 50 (inclusive). 0 means always in hyperfast mode, 50 means always in click-to-click mode.
To change the sensitivity, change this value somewhere between 0 and 50.
