ping: connect: Network is unreachable

I’ve been trying to connect to internet now for a serious long time.
Having a fresh install of Arch Linux.

Ping 8.8.8.8 gives me:
connect: Network is unreachable

I’ve tried many things.
It would be very nice if someone can point me in the right direction..

Here some output that might help.

inet 192.168.5.240/24 brd 192.168.5.255 scope global eth0

dhcpcd eth0 (after killing the process)

version 5.6.0 starting
eth0: sending IPv6 Router Solicitation
eth0: rebinding lease of 192.168.5.101
eth0: acknowledged 192.168.5.101 from 192.168.5.1
eth0: checking for 192.168.5.101
eth0: sending IPv6 Router Solicitation
eth0: leased 192.168.5.101 for 7200 seconds
forked to background, child pid 9885

# Generated by dhcpcd
nameserver 8.8.8.8
# /etc/resolve.conf.tail can replace this line
(note: I putted the second line in a new file called /etc/resolve.conf.head)

Again, it would be very nice with some tips..
I’m ready to respond right away.

Thanks
Ivy
PS Having a windows laptop on the side, same network. Works fine.

Re: ping: connect: Network is unreachable

do you have dhcpcd enabled in systemd?
run this command and see what happens.
[ systemctl enable dhcpcd@eth0.service ]
reboot for it to take effect.

Is there a different way I can do this?

Hi Ivy,
Double-check the nameserver is in «/etc/resolv.conf» not in «resolve.conf»

did you run it as superuser?
sudo systemctl enable dhcpcd@eth0.service
then enter your password.

Hei. Thanks for the response.
Checked it. It is in /etc/resolv.conf.
resolv.conf does not exists, and when I «vi» it, it says I’m creating a new file.

Darn. I don’t have sudo installed.
As said, it’s a fresh install of Arch linux, so pretty clean (or: empty. )
Any work arounds for this?
Sorry if it all sounds hopeless.. trying to do what I can here.

you can do this.

enter the root password.
then enter the command without sudo.
systemctl enable dhcpcd@eth0.service (hit enter)
type «exit» when done to go back to regular user.

[SOLVED] I have no internet! connect: Network is unreachable

After some searching, I’ve found https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165720
But the solution didn’t work for me. Or I did something wrong.

I’ve installed Arch Linux normally, but, when I log in, it has no internet.

I couldn’t install xorg, or anything, because pacman won’t do anything without internet.
Thus, I do not have access to copy paste. Try not to ask for commands which displays a huge output for me to type the result .

«ip link» command lists two interfaces: lo, enp2s0.
Initially it was down, but manually enabling it with «ip link set enp2s0 up» didn’twork.

Running «netctl list» returns nothing. When I manually did my own network file, copying ethernet-static from /etc/netctl/examples and changing from eth0 to enp2s0, and enabled it with «netctl enable mynetwork» it didn’t work.

I have no idea what else to do. I think I’ll reinstall it again and try your suggestions/solutions with a freshly reinstalled system.
Any help would be welcome.
It is my first time trying to install Arch Linux.

‘connect: Network is unreachable’ during Arch installation

Yesterday I decided to give the Arch Linux distribution a try and successfully set up a USB flash installation medium with dd using the official guide . I booted into it and did some playing around for a while until I noticed I did not have an internet connection:

I have been trying to fix this since. I have found several posts addressing similar problems but none of the solutions could fix mine.

Here is the output of ip link:

What I find strange here is that I have found multiple forum posts suggesting that the archiso setup still uses the interface names prior to the renaming with systemd 197, meaning enp2s0 should actually be be eth0 . or does that not apply here in some way?
Prior to the installation attempt I had been running Kubuntu on this machine and it most certainly had a connection to the internet.
I have tried dhcpcd with

yet nothing has changed.

Sorry if there is something obvious I’m missing or I’m doing something completely wrong . This is my first encounter with Arch after using Kubuntu for a long time. Be gentle

Re: ‘connect: Network is unreachable’ during Arch installation

Does the command dhcpcd do anything interesting? What is the output of ip addr
Does your computer’s NIC have link status LEDs? Are they lit? And Blinking?
Are you plugged into to router or switch that has link LEDs? Are they lit and blinking for the port into which you are plugged?

Re: ‘connect: Network is unreachable’ during Arch installation

Just did a reboot. # ip link still delivers the same output.

Both my NIC port and the switch into which I’m plugged in have blinking status LEDs. I’m actually typing on a second machine connected to the same switch.

EDIT: Call me crazy, but just as I rebooted the status LEDs on my NIC stopped doing anything. Needs investigating.
EDIT 2: Same goes for the LEDs on the switch. The port the machine I’m currently using is plugged into still connects.

Re: ‘connect: Network is unreachable’ during Arch installation

Check your cable.

Also, what is the NIC card? Check using lspci -nn

Curious. dhcpcd did not look for an IPv4 router. Is your router IPv6 only? Does the machine from which you are posting have an IPv4 address assigned by the router?

Re: ‘connect: Network is unreachable’ during Arch installation

Well that was strange. Just switched around cables repeatedly and the machines sometimes had internet, sometimes did not, yet it did not seem to depend on the cable or the port I plugged them into. Now it’s all up and blinking again. I’ll have to look into that. During the entire time the Arch machine couldn’t connect to the network, though, so I hope we can safely assume it’s not connected to that.

What I assume to be the NIC in the output of lspci -nn has the following text:

As for the rest, perhaps this is related?

Re: ‘connect: Network is unreachable’ during Arch installation

Interestingly, after I set up a second USB installation medium and tried the same thing, it worked like a charm, i.e. I had a perfectly fine Internet connection . at least after I booted into the new system. I followed the Beginner’s Guide very closely, all I did additionally is set up a user account with useradd and give him access to sudo. Yet, as I said, when I booted into the newly installed system, I had the exact same problem. All the commands from the above posts deliver pretty much the same output.
The Beginner’s Guide does have this interesting hint in #Establish an internet connection:

Sadly, it does not say what the ‘relevant configuration’ is. I realise this may be a new question altogether, but I do believe it still belongs here as it may solve the problem described in the original post. Perhaps somebody could point me into the right direction?

EDIT: Sorry for double post.

So the interface is detected properly you just don’t have an IP address yet.

Did you connect the cable after you’d booted the install media?

Re: Network is unreachable

Haller, FYI DHCP-server (if it present on the local network) is that «tricky thing» that performs network configuration of other devices on the network: giving an IP-address lease, setting a gateway for LAN, auto-configuring a proxy for browser, notifying about ntp-servers and many many more settings. If your network have no DHCP-server (it can be simply disabled feature on the wi-fi router) so you have to configure all of that things with your own hands. That’s what I’m saying
