No bootable device linux ubuntu

no bootable device

Добрый день, устанавливал Линукс минт 17.2, после перезагрузки появилось это no bootable device — insert boot disc and, что предпринять?

Fix “No Bootable Device Found” Error After Installing Ubuntu Linux

Last updated October 5, 2021 By Abhishek Prakash 669 Comments

Did you install Linux afresh or perhaps dual booted it? And now your system shows ‘no bootable device’ error while booting? Here’s what you could do to fix the issue.

Usually, I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows but this time I decided to go for a clean Ubuntu installation i.e. eliminating Windows completely.

After the clean install of Ubuntu, I ended up with a screen saying no bootable device found instead of the Grub screen. Clearly, the installation messed up with the UEFI boot settings.

My laptop screen looked like this:

I am going to show you how I fixed no bootable device found error after installing Ubuntu in Acer laptops. It is important that I mention that I am using Acer Aspire R13 because we have to change things in firmware settings and those settings might look different from manufacturer to manufacturer and from device to device.

So before you go on trying the steps mentioned here, let’s first see what state my computer was in during this error:

  • My Acer Aspire R13 came preinstalled with Windows and with UEFI boot manager
  • Secure boot was not turned off (my laptop has just come from repair and the service guy had put the secure boot on again, I did not know until I ran up in the problem). You can read this post to know how to disable secure boot in Acer laptops
  • I chose to install Ubuntu by erasing everything i.e. existing Windows, various partitions etc.
  • After installing Ubuntu, I saw no bootable device found error while booting from the hard disk. Booting from live USB worked just fine

In my opinion, not disabling the secure boot was the reason of this error. However, I have no data to backup my claim. It is just a hunch. Interestingly, dual booting Windows and Linux often ends up in common Grub issues like these two:

If you are in similar situation, you can try the fix which worked for me.

Fix no bootable device found error after installing Ubuntu

Pardon me for poor quality images. My OnePlus camera seems to be not very happy with my laptop screen.

Step 1

Turn the power off and boot into boot settings. I had to press Fn+F2 (to press F2 key) on Acer Aspire R13 quickly. You have to be very quick with it if you are using SSD hard disk because SSDs are very fast in booting. Depending upon your manufacturer/model, you might need to use Del or F10 or F12 keys.

Step 2

In the boot settings, make sure that Secure Boot is turned on. It should be under the Boot tab.

Step 3

Go to Security tab and look for “Select an UEFI file as trusted for executing” and click enter.

Just for your information, what we are going to do here is to add the UEFI settings file (it was generated while Ubuntu installation) among the trusted UEFI boots in your device. If you remember, UEFI boot’s main aim is to provide security and since Secure Boot was not disabled (perhaps) the device did not intend to boot from the newly installed OS. Adding it as trusted, kind of whitelisting, will let the device boot from the Ubuntu UEFI file.

Step 4

You should see your hard disk like HDD0 etc here. If you have more than one hard disk, I hope you remember where did you install Ubuntu. Press Enter here as well.

Step 5

You should see here. Press enter.

Step 6

You’ll see in next screen. Don’t get impatient, you are almost there 🙂

Step 7

You’ll see shimx64.efi, grubx64.efi and MokManager.efi file here. The important one is shimx64.efi here. Select it and click enter.

In next screen, type Yes and click enter.

Step 8

Once we have added it as trused EFI file to be executed, press F10 to save and exit.

Reboot your system and this time you should be seeing the familiar Grub screen. Even if you do not see Grub screen, you should at least not be seeing “no bootable device found” screen anymore. You should be able to boot into Ubuntu.

If your Grub screen was messed up after the fix but you got to login into it, you can reinstall Grub to boot into the familiar purple Grub screen of Ubuntu.

I hope this tutorial helped you to fix no bootable device found error. Any questions or suggestions or a word of thanks is always welcomed.

No bootable device

I know this isn’t exactly a Linux problem but I’m getting no help anywhere else. I’m trying to reinstall ubuntu onto my laptop but I keep getting the error «No bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key» but I have it on my USB ready to install but for some ready it won’t recognize it at all. I’ve tried everything I could find on the internet and none of them are useful, please help!

Assuming your computer supports boot from USB, you may have to enable it to do so in your BIOS settings. Access the BIOS settings by pressing the appropriate key at startup (varies from machine to machine, typically one of the function keys. google your machine to find out what it is), then go to the boot options and ensure boot from USB is enabled.

If this fails, it’s possible the USB you created is no good and you should try putting a fresh image on it. unetbootin is popular and has a reputation for not causing as many errors as other similar utilities.

Sounds like you’re using a UEFI system. When you create usb installers they are typically for mbr bios only, it depends what program you use to make it. Install using a DVD and it should work fine.

I had the same problem installing ubuntu! Here is what to do.

  1. Boot to BIOS
  2. On security, make USB on the top.
  3. Make sure that the USB has a good copy of ubuntu
  4. Click ‘try ubuntu’
  5. install efibootmgr
  6. Change so boot order so ubuntu is at the top
  7. Unplug USB
  8. Reboot
It worked with my computer. I’m sorry if it doesn’t work with yours.

What helps me is preparing usb with software «unetbootin», you can install it from command:

It is ofter a file sistem problem. Try with fat, it may help. NTFS is a file sistem based on windows.

Installing Ubuntu Server 18.04 on old PC «no bootable device» [duplicate]

I’m trying to install Ubuntu Server 18.04 on a PC with an old Intel motherboard. The installation finished ok, but at restart it says

I suppose that Ubuntu was installed in UEFI mode and the motherboard only boots in legacy mode.

What should I do?

1 Answer 1

There are three major breakpoints for processors. Non-pae/pae; 32-bit/64-bit; and BIOS/UEFI.

18.04 LTS will install in legacy mode. If you have the option in the BIOS to select UEFI then you will likely have a 64-bit processor and PAE.

If the OS installed in UEFI, then you can go into the BIOS and set the BIOS to boot from UEFI mode. Reboot. If booting still fails, you will have to set the UEFI boot target in BIOS. Hopefully, it will auto-detect it. If not, you will have to search for it using the utility in the BIOS. Without knowing more about the system, I can’t really help you. The BIOS is very specific to the model of the computer.

If the computer is old enough to have either the first two issues, then the OS will not have even began the install.

My recommendation is to check the BIOS settings. If you are not going to use a hard drive more that 2.5 TB, then use legacy all the way around. On the boot-up, make sure that the boot-option you choose, matches your choice in the BIOS.

The standard Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop and Server ISOs boot in both Legacy (BIOS) and UEFI, defaulting to Legacy (BIOS).

One other issue. a dead battery will give you issues with booting.

No bootable device insert boot disc and press any key error

Hello Im new here and i have this -hopefully little- problem as the title shows

i have this one month old laptop it came with windows 7 pro but i wanted to install ubuntu so i got the iso image of ubuntu 14.04.1 downloaded and and booted it into a USB hard drive disk using UNeBoot and then i live booted into ubunto which was the first time i see an OS other than windows . anyway it gave me the option to either test ubuntu or to install it on the hard drive .. i spent some time testing it then ofc i couldnt say no to the install option . i followed the instructions on openclassrooms
http://fr.openclassrooms.com/informa. aide-de-linux/

im not sure if there is an english version for that. anyway it basically recommands the partition of the hard disk through the ubuntu installer and gives the exact instructions for that. i followed them and got ubuntu 14.04.1 installed on my hard drive.
but when i restarted my pc i got this error message No bootable device insert boot disc and press any key.
no idea what to do since im new to all of this and initially wanted Linux because im gonna be studying this in college.
i read the older thread of the same title but there the poster did not need to keep his windows 8 but i really need my windows 7 and cant afford to lose it. it also contained mysterious terms for me that i couldnt understand.

im sorry for being noob at this so i was hoping if anyone would like to help to use simple language since English is my 3rd learned language and of course idk most of basic things about ubuntu or informatique as i was hoping to learn through using ubuntu.

but right now im stuck on being able to only live boot to ubuntu through the hard drive disk

also if anyone knows can u please tell me how to set keyboard as azerty and not qwerty because i; having a hard ti;e typing so;e letters as u can see.

also when attempting to install ubuntu again through the live boot it detects both of windows and ubuntu as already installed on the hard drive . see attachements

. and i can see the partitions i made earlier and they are as follows : . see attachements

thank you in advance for your help . i really hope i can solve this before dad finds out
