Use OpenOffice in Linux. Why would want to use that MS Crap anyway.
I found that OpenOffice works better

Not unless you really need it for testing or something like that . then just ignore this post.

I didn’t use the terminal, I just right clicked the setup in the disk and clicked run with wine.

Here is a screen of what it says (though, it doesn’t say much):

Right-clicking will just use the default wineprefix, which is going to fail because it is a 64 bit wineprefix. You have to run the installer from a terminal and specify the new wineprefix you created.

Also, looking back over this thread I suspect you didn’t create a 32 bit wineprefix. Delete the one you created and recreate it with:

(use the actual path to setup.exe)

Thank you! Giving this thread a bump because this actually worked. Most of the guides explaining how to install Office in wine are terrible, and it all comes down to this one line.

Start to finish process to get Office installed. Some steps may be redundant because I’m not entirely sure what each step does:
1. Type winecfg in a terminal. This opens the wine config.
2. Select the Libraries tab.
3. Add the override riched20. This allows the Office installer to start without error.
4. Type WINEPREFIX=’/home/username/prefix32′ WINEARCH=’win32′ wine ‘wineboot’ in a terminal, replacing username with your username.
5. Type WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/home/username/prefix32 wine /path/to/setup.exe in a terminal, filling in your username and the path to the Office setup.exe

В этой статье мы установим Microsoft Office 2010.

1. Установка Wine, PlayOnLinux и других необходимых компонентов

В дистрибутивах Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint и пр.:

sudo dpkg — add — architecture i386
sudo apt update
sudo apt install wine winetricks samba playonlinux

В дистрибутивах Arch, Manjaro:

sudo pacman — S wine winetricks winbind playonlinux

2. Конфигурация Wine

Перейдите во вкладку Desktop Integration. Нам нужно настроить внешний вид приложений Wine. Для этого скачайте этот архив (в нем лежит тема и скрипт для применения сглаживания шрифтов). В окне Wine нажмите на Install theme и выберите файл Novus.msstyles из архива. Примените настройки и закройте окно. Теперь программы, запущенные в wine, имеют более привлекательный вид.

Далее нам нужно запустить скрипт winefontssmoothing_en.sh. Но прежде нужно сделать его исполняемым:

chmod + x winefontssmoothing_en . sh

Также это можно сделать в «свойствах» файла:

Запустить скрипт можно, открыв его местоположение в терминале и введя:

3. Запуск PlayOnLinux и установка Office

В меню программ PlayOnLinux найдите Microsoft Office 2010. Запустите установку.

На следующем этапе вас попросят выбрать установочные файлы. Вы можете найти их в интернете (но учтите, что нужна 32-битная версия) или скачать здесь . Распакуйте архив, в окне установки выберите файл setup.exe.

Нажмите на кнопку «Далее». Вы увидите окно конфигурации Wine, затем откроется всем привычное окно установки Office. Можно выбрать компоненты, которые хотите установить, а затем продолжить. Какое-то время будет происходить установка, а после вы увидите сообщение о ее успешном завершении.

После основной установки Office PlayOnLinux еще некоторе время будет загружать другие необходимые компоненты, такие как шрифты и «Microsoft .NET». В итоге в главном окне PlayOnLinux и на рабочем столе вы увидите ярлыки програм офисного пакеты.

4. Конфигурация Office

На самом деле, программы, установленные в PlayOnLinux несколько изолированы от основного Wine, поэтому ради сглаживания шрифтов, нам нужно зайти в PlayOnLinux » Configure » Выбрать виртуальный диск «Office2010» » Wine » Configure Wine.

5. Запуск и возможные проблемы

Запустить свежеустановленный офис не составляет никакого труда: найдите ярлык и щелкните по нему 2 раза. Но дальше могут возникнуть проблемы.

1. При первом запуске Office обычно выводит окно с предложением выбрать режим установки обновлений. В нашем же случае этот процесс часто сопровождается зависанием. Можно подождать, но возможно будет необходимо «убить» процесс Wine и Office, например, через htop в терминале или другой диспетчер процессов. Затем снова запустить. Если повезет — даже заработает.
2. Имеются проблемы с активацией. Даже если у вас есть лицензионный ключ Office, вы вряд ли сможете активировать его — при попытке это сделать возникает ошибка, приходится перезапускать.В сети есть различные решения этой проблемы, но все они, в основном, через «танцы с бубном» и не стоят потраченного времени. Ведь особенность старых версий Office — они продолжают работать, даже без активации 🙂

Installing Office 2010 on Ubuntu 15.04 using Wine

I had installed Office 2010 32bit on Ubuntu 12.04 before using guides such as this. However, due to package changes, I was not able to replicate the same on Ubuntu 15.04.

How does one install Office 10 using Wine?

Short version

Switching to the latest Wine version (1.7) and installing winbind were additional steps needed.

Long version

The instructions are for Ubuntu 15.04 64bit. This borrows heavily from Crag Gomez’s guide, so thanks to him for a lot of these instructions.

Install the latest version of Wine — dotnet20 installations cause issues otherwise

Install mesa OpenGL — may already exist, so the below commands would simply state that.

Create softlinks for the 32bit OpenGL librariies (needed only for 64 bit systems)

Create a new WINEPREFIX for Office — this will be the directory that contains your files. You can use any directory, but I followed the standard Wineprefix directory (add your username).

Additionally, create that directory:

Set the WINEARCH to 32 bit. Office 10 32 bit is the version that works best.

Install winbind . Office installation stops midway if this is not done

Install dotnet20 , msxml6 and corefonts modules using winetricks.

Once you run the command you will be asked if you want to install a Mono package as well as a Gecko package — select no for both. wine-mono and wine-gecko should have already been installed when you installed wine

Do the actual Windows install.

Browse to the folder with the installation media and run

Change settings for libraries in the wineprefix after installing

• Run winetricks
• Select Run winecfg. select the «Libraries» tab.
• You should see msxml6 (native, built-in) in the Existing overrides section. Highlight it and click Edit and select Native (Windows) and click OK. Now, it should show up as *msxml6 (native).
• Then add the riched20 and gdiplus libraries from the New override for library section and make sure these are also set as «Native»

Your office programs should show up in the Unity lenses.

How To Install Microsoft Office 2010 In Ubuntu With Wine

You will need a Microsoft Office 2010 Disk And a Microsoft Office 2010 Genuine key.

Open terminal Ctrl – Alt – TAnd run these commands.

This will install the ppa.

You will need to enter your root password.

Now we need to install Wine.

You can edit the version.

After installing wine we need to configure it.

Select the Libraries tab, then scroll down and select ‘Riched20’ library from the list and add it. When done, click ‘OK’

Run the commands below to configure windows environment for 32-bit version of Office.

Run the commands below to enable for settings for Wine

Insert your Office CD or DVD into your computer and right-click on Setup.exe and open with Wine.

With the installer opens, click ‘Install Now’ to begin the installation. Follow the prompts.

When you’re done, restart your computer and open Ubuntu Dash. Search for Microsoft Office to use the suite.

You will need to hit enter after typing those commands. Sorry.

I don’t think you need to add the ppa. I think ppas are only available for ubuntu and derivatives.

A/V Software? I don’t need A/V software. I’ve run Linux since ’98 w/o A/V software and have never had a virus. I never even had a firewall until ’01 when I began to get routers with firewalls pre installed. With Linux if a vulnerability is detected a fix is quickly found and then upon your next update the vulnerability is patched. If you must worry about viruses on a Linux system only worry about them in the sense that you can infect a windows user. I recommend Linux Mint or, if you need a lighter weight operating system that fits on a cd, MX14 or AntiX.

The title of the tutorial is How To Install Microsoft Office 2010 In Ubuntu With Wine. Not Open Suse or RedHat Puppy etc.

I don’t think you need to add the ppa

This is the way I do things when I install stuff, And it works. If people want to do it their way, That’s fine too, Just don’t come here complaining if it don’t work.

Looks good to me, Nick!

If and when I decide to port over my MS Office 2010/2007 installs to Linux Mint, at least now I know how. Just may try a Office 2007 package and see how it goes. Though to be honest, I’m a bit leery of WINE, but hey, that’s what security software is for, isn’t it?

Though I don’t know how ESET NOD32 for Linux would respond to WINE, would it wipe it out, or leave it alone? I could configure the client not to scan that drive (or folder), but then I’d leave myself with a security hole.

So that brings my question on this. Is it good, being that this is an emulated Windows environment, to have some form of Windows security installed in the WINE folder, to cover all of it’s software. My thinking is that it would be good to do, as Linux security solutions are well known to knock a Windows install in the dirt, and have learned that via the School of Hard Knocks, not something that was read on the Internet. Scanned & partially cleaned Windows 7 with ClamTK, the outcome was an unbootable partition.

While I’ll agree that this is very doable (the Office install), it doesn’t come risk free, and only those who really needs MS Office should do this. Ubuntu & it’s derivatives ships with a more than adequate for most users in LibreOffice. Only those whom needs a couple of features needs to bother, or those who has employment or educational needs that mandates MS Office.

LibreOffice has handled my sparse Office needs while in Linux Mint quite well.

Though I don’t want to take away from Nick’s tutorial by the above, my main concern is security. It would mean for those who uses the Outlook package for email, to be on the lookout for attachments that may be loaded with malware, as it could infect the whole WINE folder if one were opened.

+1 on the tutorial.

The only way I know is to try & see. Or any security for that matter.

Surely some type of security would be needed for those who would depend on WINE for their needs, be it ESET or whatever. I would suspect that it would have to be a type to scan for Windows based threats, if the Outlook email client is being used, and any other software that Linux virus scanners would flag it all.

In the next couple of days, have things to do tomorrow, will have to give this a shot with an older MS Office version. My newer ones, I may want to actually use in the future, so don’t want to burn through activations. Will need to go back and familiarize myself a bit on WINE & give it a go. Last time I tried it, seemed to run fast, unlike that of the old. Or maybe it’s I now have better computers.

This tutorial is of great value to someone whom is wanting to make the leap to Ubuntu or any OS’s based on it, Mint being the most popular one, there are lots of others.

Especially if one needs Microsoft Office 2007 & newer versions for work, school, or uses it because it’s all one has used in the last 15+ years. While some workplaces & schools accepts various LibreOffice, others may accept MS Office only. Or one has a more recent MS Office license & doesn’t want to waste it. This tutorial will help get one off of Windows for better security & run MS Office, even the latest versions, easily. These days, one is provided a license key only, and has to download & install the software after entering the COA provided. It may be on a paper card if purchased at a retail store, or an emailed one if purchased from the Microsoft Store.

If in doubt with the latest version, try with a Trial & see the outcome.

Either way, this works. Before reinstalling my OS some months back to clean it up, tried with a Office 2010 Standard .exe file & key, it installed perfectly. And everything worked.

Being that Linux is now more popular than when this Topic was created, I agree with Nick above my post, a bump is in order. This is something huge that Linux users & those considering making the leap needs to know, that the reasons not to make the change are fewer.

Also, keep in mind that you can use LibreOffice, it’s usually included with most Distributions. It has most of the features of MS Office and is free as well!

I agree with you in full, no more than I have to send anything these days, either LibreOffice does the job, or the ‘Reply’ tab on the email itself. Actually use Office software maybe 5-6 times a year, at the most, so LIbre more than meets the need. We actually have two groups of Microsoft Office users whom also runs Linux, or Windows for that matter, as LibreOffice installs on these OS’s also.

1) The ones who says that they need MS Office, w/out giving a thought about any other alternative, period (the majority).

2) The few who actually needs MS Office over a couple of features (the needle in the haystack).

3) Peer pressure & propaganda by Microsoft & Apple (or those acting on their behalf) prevents consumers from running LInux or LibreOffice.

With that said, and I know this to be fact (as in I know the folks), there are Windows users (non-business ones) who won’t budge on MS Office, saying ‘there’s no other alternative’, ‘anything that’s Free isn’t worth having’, among other comments I cannot quote here, due to the nature of what was stated. This is the group this Tutorial is targeted towards.

The 2nd fact is, that these are the same ones who refuses to run Linux period, though one relative ran it on my desktop for over an hour while at the same time calling LInux ‘garbage’, even though it was running like a race horse & she had commented several times that my PC was very fast. When she got through, signed out & left the browser open. I asked her to take a peek at something. Minimized Google Chrome, and there was that ‘garbage’ she refused to run. She asked ‘What is that?’. I told her, Linux Mint, part of that garbage she said she’d never run & her jaw dropped.

Though she’s never asked me to install Linux for her, at least that put her in her place, in fact, asked me to install it on a friend’s notebook, where she had lost her Windows 7 DVD. Though I have an AIO one, that has all 5 editions, in addition to Retail, Upgrade, OEM & Refurbished PC’s (it’s not a top level secret as to how to make one), I played stupid & installed Linux Mint MATE x64 on it & she’s been thrilled. Loves the no cost LibreOffice, and now the relative who called it all garbage has to hear it from her friend, who in fact does use LibreOffice heavily & loves not having to ‘upgrade’ to a newer MS Office nearly every other year. There’s the Microsoft Fonts package that can be installed, if needed.

Since there’s been a new WINE release after this Tutorial was created, MS Office should run good within it.

Just be sure to run some security, if nothing else, learn to use the Linux ones inbuilt, or can be added to the distro. Every day that MS Office is ran, be sure not to forget to run it afterwards.

Me either, first off, am not going to create a security gap by installing WINE, which is needed for the MS Office install. I’ve never heard anyone saying anything regarding updates, something that may be needed to be researched & addressed. After all, we don’t want anything unpatched on our installs, and there’s been SP2 released for MS Office 2010, plus a boatload of other updates.

Maybe someone will come forward with the answer to this question that’s a critical one, first the creation of a security leak with WINE, secondly, if the Office install won’t update, that spells trouble.

I should mention I am VERY new to Linux. This was my first real install. After testing many, I went with Xubuntu. I am trying to make the switch, but am having an really hard time letting go of Outlook, OneNote & MS Money specifically. Money and Outlook being the hardest to let go. I manage my business through there.

I have done a lot of reading on Wine and issues with security, and since security with Wine seems to be an issue, the first thing that came to my mind was updates for Office. As a trial, (after creating a disk image), I installed Wine and Office 2010. It went smooth. I then tried to update Office through Word and it did not work. I then tried downloading an Office service pack and installing with Wine, that didn’t work either. So maybe someone with more expertise can shed some light.

Also as a side note, Money was a mess. needed IE6 installed and still didn’t function properly.

Long story short, because of the security issues with Wine and on top of that not currently being able to update Office (which is a security issue in and of itself), I rolled back using my image and currently just have my Xubuntu laptop as a secondary laptop. With it I will try Thunderbird and GnuCash as other options while keeping my other laptop running Windows and slowly weening myself off MS.
