How can I disable the Restore Recently Closed Windows in Firefox 9.0?

Chosen solution

Make sure to close all tabs in a window before closing a window to prevent that window from showing in the «Recently Closed Windows list»

Set the pref browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to false on the about:config page to prevent closing the last tab from closing that window.
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config

Use Alt+F to open the File menu to make the «Close Window» entry appear or use the close X on the title bar to close the window.

Usually if you close a non-private window and check the Recently Closed Windows list, that window will be the first available for restoration. I can’t think of any explanation for a non-private closed window to be missing from the list after you use its X button.

Unless it was not in the same session of Firefox as the other window. Firefox is capable of maintaining and running in multiple profiles simultaneously. Could you check this:

Profile Manager Page

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

This page should list at least one profile and could list many. (Each profile has two folders and one or more buttons. Do not use any Remove buttons!)

The profile that Firefox is currently using will have this:

This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.

Do you have another profile here? If so, you can check whether it is the one you were using recently by clicking its Launch profile in new browser button.

Does that have the missing window?

Thanks for responding. I actually have 3 profiles there. I opened hit ”Launch profile in new browser” for 2 of them and I actually got back the tabs from the initial question from 5 months ago. I can’t believe it. Could you, please, tell me why this is happening? Why do I have more than 1 account in this section?

One possible reason for multiple profiles is when a profile folder (or critical files) are locked during an update. We’ve also had some users report a Firefox multi-install, when Firefox was here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

because they used Firefox since the 32-bit days, and somehow a 64-bit update went instead into the default 64-bit folder rather than doing an in-place update:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

Now they have two installs of Firefox that may use separate profiles. If their default profile for external links is in the older folder and their desktop icon opens the Firefox in the newer folder, then they might often end up running two profiles at the same time.

Possibly this happened to you.

Either way, the about:profiles page has buttons to change your default profile so it can be consistent with the one used by your desktop shortcut.

I don’t know the best way to detangle/reconcile the different sessions in different profiles. Possibly joining them all to the same Firefox Account and synchronizing tabs might ease the process of letting go of older ones, but I’ve never tested it myself.

Restore previous session — Configure when Firefox shows your most recent tabs and windows

Firefox can restore all windows and tabs that were open when it was last closed or terminated unexpectedly. This article describes the circumstances under which Firefox will restore your previous session and how you can configure it.

Table of Contents

When session restore occurs

When you select Restore Previous Session from the Firefox menu

Here’s how to get your tabs and windows from a previous session back using the Firefox menu:

  1. Click the menu button on the right side of your toolbar.
  2. Select Restore Previous Session .

After a Firefox update

To apply any updates to the Firefox application that have been downloaded, you must restart Firefox. To restart, click Restart to update Firefox .

After restarting with add-ons disabled

After a crash

Due to unexpected issues such as problems with a website, software errors, or an accidental loss of power, Firefox may unexpectedly close. In these situations, Firefox can restore the pages that you were visiting when it is restarted. Firefox will automatically restore your previous session, the first time you launch it after a crash.

If Firefox crashes a second time, the Restore Session page will appear when you next launch Firefox.

  • To restore your previous session, select the windows or tabs you want to restore and click Restore Session .
  • If Firefox continues to experience errors when windows and tabs are re-opened, you can launch Firefox without restoring these items. To start a new session, click Start New Session .

When you’ve set Firefox to show your windows and tabs from last time

You can set Firefox to always show your windows and tabs from your previous session each time you start Firefox. To change your Firefox startup settings, see Configuring session restore, below.

When you’ve set Firefox to restore the previous session at startup

You can set Firefox to always show your windows and tabs from your previous session each time you start Firefox. To change your Firefox startup settings, see Configuring session restore, below.

Configuring session restore

By default, when Firefox starts, a single window is opened, displaying your specified home page. If you wish, you can configure Firefox to open all windows and tabs from your previous session:

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Preferences . Click the menu button and select Options . Preferences . Settings .
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Below When Firefox starts select Show your windows and tabs from last time .
  4. Close the about:preferences page. Any changes you’ve made will automatically be saved.
  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Preferences . Click the menu button and select Options . Preferences . Settings .
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Below Startup select Restore previous session .
  4. Close the about:preferences page. Any changes you’ve made will automatically be saved.

Privacy issues

Session Restore may keep you logged in to sites that you were logged in to before you closed Firefox. If someone else used your computer after you, they could access your account on these sites. If this is a concern then you should not configure Firefox to open all windows and tabs from your previous session.

You may also wish to disable the Session Restore crash recovery feature which is enabled by default. This will prevent restoring a previous session when Firefox is opened after an unexpected close or software crash:

  1. Type about:config in the address bar and press Enter Return .
A warning page may appear. Click I accept the risk! Accept the Risk and Continue to go to the about:config page.
  2. In the Search box at the top, type browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash.
  3. In the resulting grid, double-click click the Togglebutton next to browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash to set it to false .

Troubleshooting

Previous session not correctly closed

To get your tabs and windows back from a previous session, you should close Firefox from the menu: Click the Firefox menu and select Exit . Click the Firefox menu at the top of the screen and select Quit Firefox . Click the Firefox menu and select Quit . If you close each window or tab, only the tabs in the final window that you close are available when you restart Firefox.

Settings may be incorrect

For other session restore problems, you may need to make corrections to your Firefox settings:

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Preferences . Click the menu button and select Options . Preferences . Settings .
  2. Select the Privacy & Security panel.
  3. In the History section, make sure that the Firefox will drop-down menu is set to either Remember history or Use custom settings for history .
    • If Firefox will is set to Use custom settings for history then make sure that Always use Private Browsing mode is not selected.
    • If Firefox will is set to Use custom settings for history and Clear history when Firefox closes is selected, then click the Settings button and make sure that Browsing & Download History is not selected.
  4. Close the about:preferences page. Any changes you’ve made will automatically be saved.

Firefox crashes when closing open windows

If there is no issue in safe mode, it means one of your «add-ons» are causing the issue and no «plugins». You will need to disable your «add-ons» one by one to find the culprit. If you have Norton Toolbar 2012/2013 then that may be the one causing the issue otherwise it is add-on causing the issue.

Yes, please provide us with the crash id’s so we can verify it is still Norton crashing. Also, if you are in contact with Tyler, please let us know. Thanks!

Hi feer56 and cor-el,

The reports in about:crashes stopped on January 27. The ones I posted on my previous reply at the beginning of the tread is all I have, even though Firefox have crashed 20-25 times since then. I never get a pop up window to report the crashes and apparently it not doing it automatically either. It has to be Norton since the crashes just DON’T HAPPEN when the tool bar is disabled.

I am in contact with Tyler and I have given him all the information I can. I was telling him that is so frustrating that is just not worth the aggravation of having this Norton Tool Bar enabled.

Many of these crashes are due to different issues. Some may be due to your add-ons and some of these are due to RealPlayer, please make sure you download the latest version of realplayer and make sure your plugins are all up to date.

Hi Feer56, Real player is up to date and all of the important plugins are also. I have no plugins that say that need to be updated. I have no problem watching any videos or downloading them. The crashes problem just started after the last Firefox update. Flash is also up to date.

Do you have any more crash ids that are the most recent? The latest one provided did not send through any data and so we are not able to determine the issue.

Firefox crashed already twice while I was closing an e-mail in the last few minutes. It crashed a few times yesterday too. When I opened the about crashes just now there is nothing there to show the new crashes. How do I make a report if there is nothing there to show i?. I did not get a window saying to report it either. Is there any other way to report a crash? The whole thing is weird. Like I said, it just started after the last Firefox update.

Please go into about:crashes and provide us with the crash ids if there are any. Sometimes, it will submit reports on it own.. Thanks! Also, please check in Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode to see if this issue occurs.

You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
  • http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Troubleshooting
  • http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-113-crash-mozilla.html

Feer56, There is no more current ids from the ones above. If you read my first post I said it does not happen while I am on safe mode. I just don’t know which plugin might be causing it. Do I have to check one by one?

I would try to do some of these things tomorrow. I cannot do them right now. I have no current problems with Real player or Flash downloading or watching videos. The same thing happened a few months ago with the Flash and the videos and I fixed it by going back to a earlier Flash version but I have never had problems with crashes before. Like I said this just started after your latest Firefox update. I have no crashes on Safe mode.

feer56 That worked. The Norton Toolbar seemed to be the culprit. It was disabled for along time but when Firefox updated it was enabled again. I also updated Norton and it was supposed to have a fix for the Firefox Norton Toolbar but I guess it did not really work. Thanks a lot for all of your help.

Hi cor-el, It was the Norton toolbar causing the problem. Thank you for your help.

Thanks for responding back. Norton is to release an update shortly to fix this crashing issue.

Have a nice day!

I just wanted to let you know that I got the Norton patch yesterday through Live Update. I turned the computer on today and enabled the Norton Tool Bar again to test it and Firefox crashed. Apparently the Norton patch did not work. You might want to tell the Norton people. Thanks again for your help.
