«This operation requires an interactive Window station» error when installing driver for a Multimedia USB keyboard.
Original Title: Requires an interactive Window station to install a USB keyboard. help!
I’m receiving «This operation requires an interactive Window station» error when installing driver for a Multimedia USB keyboard. I tried everything from removing my Norton 360 anti-virus program entirely off my system to restarting my system in selective mode with only Windows programs running to install the keyboard. None has worked. The funny thing is that the keyboard was working and installed correctly til like two days ago. it just randomly tried to reinstall itself when I turned on the system one morning and failed giving me that error msg. ( I didn’t change anything in my system prior to that..or atleast not in last two months)
And also I can’t restore my Windows to earlier stage because Windows restore, Paging, Defrag and Hibernating in my Win 7 (64bit) have been disabled to optimize the SSD that installed in my system. I enabled them and tried to install the keyboard also. that didn’t work either. I know reinstalling the entire Windows OS will install these USB devices. but I rather avoid doing it, if there’s an easier and less time consuming solution to fix this.
Also..the keyboard is just a generic plug and play Acer/Gateway keyboard that came with the system I bought. So there’s no driver software on a cd or anything. Gateway doesn’t offer any generic driver for mice and keyboards they provide with their desktops since Windows 7 should have the drivers for these already. so I can’t go and download a driver for the keyboard off Gateway website either.
And my windows 7 is all up to date with drivers and everything.
My system — Gateway DX4850 — 27eu with Intel i5 — 2.8Ghz quad core — sandy bridge with Windows 7 home premium 64bit

Do you get this error only when you try to install the Bluetooth driver?
The step I would ask you to do is disabling the security program and again try installing the Bluetooth again. It best you uninstall any previous versions first and then try reinstalling again.
You can also try installing in a clean boot state; clean boot will stop any interference with other third party software on the computer.
1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.)
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
7. Log back into your Account.
Try installing again, if it works put the computer back to normal startup using msconfig.
If the device was working fine before you can perform a system restore, restore to a point your Bluetooth device was working fine.
To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
- In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.
- In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.
- Click Finish.
The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

«This operation requires an interactive window station» — Update/Driver install error
I have recently been getting errors when windows update tries to install/update drivers. Windows update simply says that there was an error while installing updates and asks to try again, to no avail. When I attempted to manually fix the issue by updating the driver within device manager, I received the error «This operation requires an interactive window station».
Originally the problem was for my bluetooth driver that I had uninstalled, and was trying to reinstall. This issue was fixed by reinstalling windows. Windows installed the driver during setup. However, now I am receiving the same error when I plug in my secondary monitor, and my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.
Has anyone found a fix for this? I searched other forums as well and the closest solution I found was to create another user account with admin rights and that should work. I enabled my built-in admin account and tried, but that did not work. I also attempted to use the windows 10 update troubleshooter located here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/windows-update-troubleshooter . This did not work either.

How to Fix: Operation Requires Interactive Windows Station (Code 28) Error
Infopackets Reader Gord F. writes:
I recently installed Windows 10 on my PC. Everything has been working fine for over a year, however, all the sudden my Logitech webcam 300 stopped working with Windows 10. I thought perhaps I may need to reinstall the driver, so I went to Device Manager to locate the webcam but it is not there anymore. Instead, I see an ‘Unknown device’ and if I double click it, it says: ‘The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) This operation requires an interactive windows station’. I have absolutely no idea what that means. I tried downloading my webcam driver from Logitech’s website but it doesn’t do anything and I still see that Code 28 error message. Can you please help? «
Update 20200116: I’m getting a lot of emails from folks asking for help on this. If you want this problem fixed ASAP, send me an email and don’t forget to leave your phone number. I will call you back as soon as possible.
I asked Gord if he would like me to connect to his machine to have a closer look using my remote desktop support service, and he agreed. Sure enough, there was no webcam listed in Device Manager, and the «Unknown Device» had a very cryptic error message. I tried deleting those devices under Device Manager in order to reset / reinstall them, but all I got back was the same configuration.
After a bit of research, I discovered that the Code 28 error «This operation requires an interactive windows station» usually means that the permissions on folders: C:\Windows\System32\drivers and C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore have been corrupted, and resetting the permissions will likely fix this issue. In doing so, I was able to resolve this issue for Gord.
Below I will explain the steps I took to fix the issue.
How to Fix: Operation Requires Interactive Windows Station (Code 28) Error
The first thing you need to do is to reset the folder permissions on C:\Windows\System32\drivers and C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore folders, then reset the permissions recursively on the files and folders within. When that is complete, delete and re-scan the devices in Device Manager to have them reset and reinstall.
- Go to My Computer / This PC. Click Start, then click «My Computer» or «This PC».
- Double click the C drive, then go to the folder: Windows -> System32.
- Next, locate the «Drivers» folder in the list, then right click it and select Properties. The «Properties» window will be displayed; click the «Security» tab near the top. Near the bottom of the «Properties» window, click the «Advanced» button.
- A new window will appear with the title: «Advanced Security Settings for [folder name]». Near the very top of the window, it will say: «Owner: TrustedInstaller» (or perhaps another name), with a clickable link with the words «Change». Click the «Change» link.
- A new window will appear with the title: «Select a user or group». Under the heading «Enter the object name to select», type in the word: «Administrators» (no quotes) — then, ! IMPORTANT ! click on «Check Names» button immediately to the right. The «Administrators» text you input should change to something like «ComputerName\Administrators» and the entire phrase will be underlined (note: «ComputerName» is your computer’s name). If the text does not underline, then you did not type in the word «Administrators» properly. Please retry this step until it becomes underlined.
- Click OK (this will dismiss the «Select a user or group» window), and then click Apply.
- Repeat Steps 3 through 6 again, except apply the changes to the folder «DriverStore» located in C:\Windows\System32.
- Now it’s time to recursively reset the file permissions in both C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore. To do so: click Start, then type in «cmd» (no quotes); wait for CMD.EXE or Command Prompt to appear in the list, then right click it and select «Run as Administrator». A black Administrative Command Prompt window will appear.
Next, use your mouse to highlight the next below:
rem #was owned by trusted installer
icacls «C:\Windows\System32\drivers» /grant Administrators:(OI)(CI)F /T /Q /C
rem #was owned by system
icacls «C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore» /grant Administrators:(OI)(CI)F /T /Q /C
echo this is a dummy line
rem #if you see errors you can safely ignore
(a) Click Start, then right click on «This PC» or «My Computer», and select Properties. The «System» window will appear; click the Device Manager link near the top left of the window.
(b) Next, go through the list and left click to select any «Unknown Device» in the list, then press DEL on the keyboard to remove it from Device Manager. If asked, do not delete the driver — simply remove it from Device Manager.
(c) Repeat these steps until all «Unknown Devices» have been removed from the list. Repeat the same steps for any driver that may be listed in Device Manager that is not working with Code 28. For example: you may not have «Unknown Devices» but you may have a driver with a Code 28 — left click to select it, then remove it from Device Manager by pressing DEL on the keyboard.
(d) Once complete, go to the top of the Device Manager window and click the «Action» menu, then select «Scan for hardware changes» to have your devices added again (and drivers reinstalled). At this point Windows will either reinstall the driver without asking you, or you may be asked for a driver — in the latter case, you can either point to the location of the driver (if the driver files have been extracted to a folder directory structure) — if not, then you can click the Cancel button to abort, then go online the Internet to download the driver, and install the driver from a setup.exe file.
You should definitely be able to get passed the Code 28 error message at this point and the device should be listed under Device Manager properly. Also note that you may still have other «Unknown Devices» that will still show up — this may happen if Windows simply does not have drivers for certain devices. What’s important is that the device that was not previously working is now working and without error Code 28.
I hope that helps.

What is the antivirus program on the computer?
I would suggest you to temporarily disable antivirus software (and any other security software like anti malware, etc) and firewall on the computer and then try installing the drivers and check if that fixes the issue.
If disabling the antivirus software fixes the issue, you may have to configure the settings of the antivirus program accordingly. Please contact the software vendor for further assistance in this regard.
Note: Make sure you enable the antivirus software, other security programs and firewall after the test.
Warning
Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn’t disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you’re done. If you’re connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
