The Matrix Patch Area

The patch area allows you to connect any band of the analysis filter bank to any band of the synthesis filter bank.

It is very easy to edit the formants, replacing a man voice by a child’s one, make some special effects, or get the weirdest electronic voices

This patch area is also very useful to sculpt sound in a vey precise way when you use other signal as modulators, such as drums

Fats use : We added a preset manager dedicated to the patch area : It provides some init configurations (formant +1, formant -2, inverted, ….) or you can save your own Matrix patches.

XILS Vocoder 5000’s Heart: the Filter Bank

A Vocoder global quality depends heavily on its filter bank quality

Thanks to its deep experience in filtering algorithms ( Analog like, un-wrapped , zero-delay behavior filters are already used in Xils synthesizers for many years ), XILS-lab has developed a very accurate filter bank which splits both Modulator and Carrier signals into bands with an EQUAL width ( Which is quite difficult to achieve in the digital domain ).

Resulting in the most accurate software vocoder ever done, almost 100% identical to its model. We added some new features : you can tweak the emphasis, and add a ponderation curve.

The ponderation curve allows you to adapt the filter of each Filter’s Bands so that it can deliver some very smooth and warm bass frequencies, while totally preserving clarity, without the “tube” effect.

More possibilities : you can choose the number of bands (22 or 20 bands and the filters order (12,18 or 24 db/oct)

At the power of the XILS Vocoder 5000: the Oscillators and the Noise

Inspired by the EMS VCS3 oscillators, already emulated in the acclaimed XILS 3, XILS 4 synthesizers, the XILS Vocoder 5000 provides two arm sounding, clear and transparent oscillators.

Oscillators Frequency ( FM) and Shape ( PWM) can be modulated ( Vibratos etc). Oscillators frequency can be fixed, or use Keyboard Tracking (The key to nice vocoding chords effects). It can also follow the input voice/signal frequency via the Pitch Tracker module.

Next, we have the Voice/UnVoice module : Oscillators levels are automatically adapted to match the input voice behavior, sibilant or voiced.

Clicking on the “Advanced” icon opens, as it should, the Oscillator Advanced Parameters Panel : Here, you can choose the Oscillator Waveform (Saw, Pulse, Triangle, Sine), specify its shape, and select the FM and PWM sources (LFO1, or LFO2).

Finally, the Noise Generator : is also full part of the synthesizer sound, and, like the oscillators, can be driven by the Voice/unVoice module.

Vocoding clarity : the Voice/Unvoice and Slew Rate modules and freeze function

Voice or Unvoice : Based on our exclusive DeeS algorithms ( Xils-Lab transparent Deesser device ) which separates smoothly but firmly the sibilant from the voiced part of the input voice, the XILS Vocoder 5000 is providing an easy but accurate way to choose which generator must be used as Carrier when while vocoding : the Oscillators or the Noise.

Voice or Unvoice : a very simple and easy module with a Threshold, a Frequency and a Smoothness knobs. That’s all !

Slew Rate : This module analyzes the input filter bank, then apply the result to the Synthesis filter bank. Without this module’s advanced algorithm, the vocoding voice wouldn’t be as understandable and smooth.

For a better result and clarity, you can add a ponderation curve to the various bands, allowing a smoothness in the low part of the spectrum, for a warmer sound as well as a fast answer in the upper part of the spectrum more a better clarity.

The -Midi controllable- Freeze switch will, as you could expect, freeze the spectrum (or any part of the internal algorithm, pitch, slew, voice/unvoice), allowing to use the XILS Vocoder 5000 as a great and huge resonator filter.

The Frequency Shifter

Like its analog ancestor, the XILS Vocoder 5000 offers a particular effect called Frequency Shifter.

As its name implies, this effect shifts the whole spectrum of the incoming signal(s) by a certain frequency.

Depending on the set frequency, the result can be anything from a simple subtle level modulation to huge ring modulator like effects.

There are several components in this effect. Each comes with its own Level and Panoramic, to achieve wide stereo processing. The Advanced Settings Panel gives you more options.

This effect can be simultaneously applied on any of the XILS Vocoder 5000 audio paths. The frequency shift can also be driven and controlled by the Pitch Tracker Module for even more fun!

See, and control, what you hear : The Mixer and the Vu-Meters

All the 22 or 20 bands are displayed by led based Vu-Meters in the Bands mixer.
Input Speech/Signal (Modulator), internal synthesizer (Carrier), Vocoder and global output levels are displayed by needle based vintage Vu-Meter.

Finally, the level of each band can be smoothly adjusted in the Mixer (and MIDI controlled)

T.O.D: The Top Octave Divider Oscillator provides a unique sound that no samples, or other simple synthesis techniques can reproduce. Emulating the T.O.D, without any aliasing on the whole frequency range, with its pitch and waveform modulation, was a real challenge, worthy of XILS-lab. We are very proud of this effort and offer it to you for your inspiration and enjoyment.

XILS-lab touch: The XILS V+ would not however be a real XILS-lab instrument if we did not add a lot of functions and possibilities that were not present in the original machine, some giving access to its internal circuitry and parameters. And some being totally new.

Main panel

The main panel shows the same parameters than the original hardware for a better understanding. Vocoder, Human voice, Strings are enable by rocket switches, following the original keyboard split “upper/lower”.

This panel gives you all the possibilities you can find on the hardware.

A Brigade Bucket Delay based vibrato is providing for the vocoder and the human voice and the level of each section can be finely adjusted. The input of the vocoder “direct Mic” can also be mixed before the Ensemble (chorus).

An External synth input (using the side chain of the Plug-in) can be mixed with the internal sound generator to provide the vocoder carrier.

Advanced settings

To offer a huger range of sonic possibilities, the XILS V+ provides four more panels for advanced settings : Mixer/ARP, Vocoder, Effects and Modulation.

Mixer/ARP

The mixer panel offers you the possibility to finely tune the internal sound generators.

From the relative level of the Male 8 and Male/Female 4 Human voices, to the Ensemble dry/wet, you can also tweak the voices formants, the T.O.D wave form as well as the Strings filter shape.

Furthermore, to avoid the only problem some users reported from the hardware, you can select a Polyphonic attack either for the voices or for the strings.

The release, on the original machine, is reseted each time a new note is played. This is a very musical feature for long release doesn’t blur previous chords. But if you prefer standard release behavior, you can select it on this panel (“Legacy” white rocket switch).

A build-in Arpeggio is also provided with a special feature to play “broken” arpeggios, avoiding some boring cycles.

Vocoder

The vocoder panel allows you to adjust the analog-like pitch tracker, the attack and release time of the analyze algorithm as well as some parameters of the filter banks.

You can also freeze the spectrum (the result can be save in a preset or your project) and enable the special “water” effect (this is impossible to describe, so just try it)

Effects

The XILS V+ provides three built-in effects. The now well known Stereo Space, based on the XILS-lab True Stereo Dynamic Engine, a simple but efficient Reverb and an analog-like resonant Phaser.

ORANGE VOCODER doesn’t just give you one great vocoder sound, it gives you eight. Two different 24-band analog emulations give you classic vocoder sounds in linear and minimum phase. The ORANGE VOC 3 and Classic ORANGE algorithms give you the state-of-the-art ORANGE VOCODER algorithm, as well as its digital classic counterpart from the original plug-in from 1998. The unique MR 1st order, MR 2nd order and MR 3rd order Multi-Resolution modes use wavelet transform mathematics to provide frequency dependent time resolution, and sounds ranging from extremely natural to completely synthetic, while Colorize applies the Modulator’s phase response in addition to its frequency amplitude data, for a wild cross-synthesis effect.

Play It Again, Vocoder

The integrated virtual analog synth features two oscillators with ring-mod and hard-sync. Choose between analog emulation and sampled waveforms, and use the included 4-pole low-pass filter for shaping them. Add a distortion circuit that is so warm sounding that you’ll break a sweat, and throw in dual LFOs and an envelope follower and start tweaking. You can play the synth via MIDI, or tell it which notes to play using the on-screen keyboard.

Flip That Switch

ORANGE VOCODER is all about flexibility. The vocoder engine’s Carrier and Modulator inputs can be sourced from the plug-in input, a side-chain input, and the internal synth, and changing the routing is as simple as clicking one or two switches. Want to swap Carrier and Modulator signals? Hit Flip. Use the synth instead of the side-chain? Click on Synth, done.

We Hear Ya’ – And Don’t You Move!

Intelligibility is key when transforming speech using a vocoder. Which is something that ORANGE VOCODER excels at. Apart from its unique, highly transparent algorithms, it also features a high frequency pass-through circuit as well as voiced/unvoiced detection. On the other hand, ORANGE VOCODER has several options to make the results more diffuse, or even static – the integrated Filterbank Reverb allows smoothing and blurring the Filterbank modulation, while the Freeze function will capture the current state of the Filterbank and hold it infinitely.
