How to Write on Car Windows
Whether it is to make a price visible on that car you have for sale or to let the world know you’re a newlywed, writing on car windows is one way to get your message out. Every car has a front and rear window, making plenty of room for a message. The materials used to write on car windows need to be highly visible, be easily removed and be water resistant.
Step 1
Clean the windows you’ll be writing on. Plan what you want to say and how it will fit on the window. You want people to focus on your message and not the fact that the letters on one side of the window are much larger and better spaced than on the other side.
Step 2
Using liquid white shoe polish is quick, cheap and easy to see. Wet the applicator on the end of the bottle and write your message on the window. As this product is not made for this purpose, you may need to make more than one pass at writing your sign on the window. Don’t try to put on too much at a time because it will drip.
Use window markers for colorful signs or to create more interest in your window writing. These markers are easy to find at stores. Wal-Mart and Walgreens both carry these markers, for example. Use is similar to the method used to apply liquid white shoe polish. Simply push down on the bottle to wet the applicator and write.

1] gInk
gInk is one of the best on-screen annotation software for Windows 10. It has three features that catch the attention. You can move annotations or drawings that you drew from one area to another. The feature to show/hide all the annotations is also there. Also, you can enable the mouse pointer to use desktop and other applications without losing the annotations. Later, you can use annotation tools again to begin from your left off. It has 10 different pens for on-screen drawing. By default, only 5 pens are visible on its toolbar, but you can access Settings to show more pens on its toolbar.
You can download this open-source software from GitHub. After running this software, you can click its system tray icon to access the available tools. You will see different color pens, an eraser tool to delete an annotation, an eye icon to show/hide annotations, a Pan tool to move annotations, screenshot capture to take a full-screen snapshot, or a specific area, undo tool, etc.
You can also access Settings of this software by right-clicking on its system tray icon and using Options. There, you will be able to set hotkeys for different pens, tick mark on pens and tools that you want to show in the toolbar, change the path to store screenshots, etc.

ZoomIt is actually a screen zoom and annotation software, but you can also use it to draw on your Windows 10 desktop screen. You can use its freehand tool and text tool to draw or write something on desktop screen. It provides only a red color for drawing but it successfully serves the purpose of drawing on the screen. In addition to that, it also comes with a basic break reminder software that you can use with custom time to take a break from work.
After downloading its zip file, you can run this portable tool. Now, use Ctrl+2 hotkey to activate its drawing tool. To use the text tool while drawing, you can press ‘t’ and then add a custom text. You can skip from drawing and text tools using Esc key.
If you want to use zoom-in feature, then press Ctrl+1 hotkey. Or else, you can also set custom hotkeys by accessing Options window of this tool. Simply right-click on the system tray icon of this software and click on Options to open that window and change hotkeys.
These are some helpful options to draw on Windows 10 desktop screen. gInk is definitely a bit better than other on-screen drawing software because of its unique features. But, other software are also good.
10 Ways to Write on Your Car Windows
I’ve been noticing an uptick in the amount of cars with window decorations lately. It is so fun to see the announcements for graduations, sports, and everything else! I wanted to add some designs to my car to celebrate my daughter finishing her school year and show how proud I am of her, so I started to do some research about what to use to write on my windows. There were quite a few options, and some really surprised me, so I wanted to write up a little article that puts all the information in one place for others looking to decorate their car windows. I hope it is helpful and that you have fun decorating!
You can write and paint on car windows with liquid chalk markers and pens, liquid shoe polish, dry erase markers, acrylic paint, solidified paint marker, shaving cream, and bar soap, as well as homemade window chalk, homemade window paint, and, finally, your fingers.
With so many options, I thought it would be helpful to tell you about each one and some of the pros and cons so that you can pick the technique that works best for you.
1. Liquid Chalk Markers and Pens
Liquid chalk markers and pens are great choices for writing on car windows. Amazon sells some great variety packs, so your car windows and designs can be colorful and bright. You can go with plain white for a classic look, or try some bright neon colors for something a little more flashy.
I personally like using liquid chalk markers and pens because they are easy to use and control. You hold them like you would a regular marker. To use them, first you push down on the tip until the liquid chalk comes out to wet the tip. Then you are ready to go! You can press down again if you need to rewet the tip. They wipe off easily when they are dry, which makes fixing mistakes and cleanup a breeze! You can also use a glass cleaner or a magic eraser.
One thing to consider because purchasing is the tip size. If the product is labeled as a “pen”, it probably has a relatively small tip-size. If you want your words and designs to stand out and be big and bold, make sure you are ordering a “marker” with a wide-tip. You can even order both for your big design and fine detailing work.
2. Liquid Shoe Polish
You can use liquid shoe polish on car windows. White liquid shoe polish really stands out and is pretty easy to work with. All you do is push down on the bottle, sometimes squeezing a little, until the liquid comes out. If you choose this method, I recommend doing a couple lighter passes of the liquid instead of one heavy pass so that your design doesn’t drip.
One of the drawbacks with this method is that your color selection is very limited. You can find white, black, and browns fairly easily, but not much else. Also, the tip is usually just a round sponge tip. This makes any detail work, like a drawing, a little more challenging.
There are a few ways to remove liquid shoe polish from your windows when you are ready. The first is Windex. I heard from a few drag racers who paint their cars that this works very well. You can also scrape the paint off with a razor blade. This is a trickier method as it causes the dried shoe polish to flake off in small pieces. This can be quite messy. Lastly, you can make a homemade cleaner from 1 tablespoon cornstarch and 1/4 cup vinegar. Combine in a spray bottle of warm water and you are ready to go! Just spray the dried shoe polish and scrub with a soft cloth.
3. Dry Erase Markers
I never would have thought to use dry erase markers to write on car windows, but they work! My best friend recently did this to decorate her car and do a drive-by for my daughter’s fourth birthday. It wiped right off afterward too.
The special thing about dry erase markers is that they can be used all over the car. You can use them to write on the windows, mirrors, and the body of the car!
One of the downsides to using this method is that they don’t show up very well on the windows, but it would work perfectly on the body of a light colored car and on the mirrors.
4. Acrylic Paint
Acrylic paint is another option for writing on your car windows. It is easily accessible and comes in so many more colors than the liquid chalk markers. Acrylic paint is craft paint, so you might already have some laying around at home. Just make sure it is water-based before you begin. If you really want your colors to pop, especially the darker colors, lay down a base of white first.
This would be a great technique for someone who wanted to paint a design on their car window. My brother is an artist, and I could totally see him using this technique to create something really special and unique on his car windows. With so many colors, and a variety of paint brush sizes, this technique leaves you wide open to total creativity!
To clean off the acrylic paint, carefully use a razor blade to scrape it off.
5. Solidified Paint Marker
Solidified paint markers are something car dealerships use to write on car windows, and might be something you already have laying around your house if you have kids. Sakura is a brand that makes them, marketed for adults, and Kwik Stik makes a brand marketed for kids, but both are solidified paint sticks that work really well on car windows. They come in bright colors, and really stand out on car windows.
The Sakura brands are formed with more of a pointed tip, like a crayon, so might be easier for detailed writing. The Kwik Stiks come in so many wonderful and fun colors, but might be harder to write with as they have more of a round, flat tip.
When you are ready, solidified paint markers clean off easily with soap and water.
6. Shaving Cream
Shaving cream can be used to write on car windows. This is a fun option, especially if you have kids who want to help. For easy application, put some shaving cream in a bowl and brush it onto the windows with a paint brush. You can add color with a few drops of tempera paint.
Just a word of caution, I have heard that shaving cream can cause damage to the car paint sometimes. Also, it can leave behind a film, even after washing off. If this sounds too risky for your car, it might still be an option for a sliding glass door!
7. Bar Soap
Regular bar soap is another way you can write on car windows. This is a very inexpensive option, and totally safe for your car.
One down-side is that it might be difficult to do any detailed work with a bar of soap, and you are very limited on color choice. It also doesn’t show up very vibrantly.
One tip is to let the soap hang out in a bucket of water for a few hours before writing. The soap will get really mushy, which results in more soap transferred to the window easily.
Bar soap washes off very easily with water, and washes your car at the same time!
8. Homemade Window Chalk
You can make your own window chalk to paint on your car windows. It is very inexpensive to make, plus, you have control over the color, consistency, and opacity of the chalk for your project. It is super easy to make, and I am sure you probably have everything you need already. I found this post on hunker with some good directions.
To make homemade window chalk, all you need is a piece of sidewalk chalk in the color of your choice and dish soap.
First, smash the sidewalk chalk into dust. A mortar and pestle would be perfect for this. Combine 1 part chalk dust with 2 parts dish soap. You can use a little more soap for a thinner mixture, or a little less soap for a thicker, more opaque mixture. Make sure your soap does not contain bleach.
Now you are ready to paint your car windows. When you are ready to clean off your windows, just rinse with water and scrub.
9. Homemade Window Paint
Another great homemade option for painting car windows is homemade window paint. All you need for this is washable paint, like tempera, dish soap, and flour. Mix equal parts the paint color of your choice and dish soap. Remember, make sure you pick a soap without bleach in it. Then you add flour. The amount you add depends on what consistency you want. The flour also helps the paint be more opaque, so the colors are brighter. Taming Little Monsters has a great tutorial.
When you would like to wash it off, it comes off with some water and a little scrubbing.
10. Your Fingers
If your car is in need of a washing, all you need to write on your windows are your fingers! This is an easy option, and I actually always catch myself trying to read these types of messages over the ones done in bright colors.
This option is the most accessible, and the most affordable. With that said, this is probably the least colorful option.
Before You Paint
To prepare your car windows for painting, wipe them with a glass cleaner and paper towels. You can also drive through a car wash. This ensures that your car is dirt and dust free, which makes decorating much easier.
