Welcome to Pale Moon – Your browser, Your way
Pale Moon is an Open Source, Goanna-based web browser available for Microsoft Windows and Linux (with contributed other operating system support), focusing on efficiency and customization. Make sure to get the most out of your browser!
Pale Moon offers you a browsing experience in a browser completely built from its own, independently developed source that has been forked off from Firefox/Mozilla code a number of years ago, with carefully selected features and optimizations to improve the browser’s stability and user experience, while offering full customization and a growing collection of extensions and themes to make the browser truly your own.
Please find links to our most popular individual download pages:
Looking for other download options like a package for a different operating system or portable version? Check the download menu at the top of this page!
Main features :
- Optimized for modern processors
- Based on the Unified XUL Platform (UXP) containing our own optimized layout and rendering engine (Goanna)
- Safe: forked from mature Mozilla code and regularly updated with the latest security patches
- Secure: Additional security features and security-aware development
- Supported by our user community, and fully non-profit
- Privacy-aware: zero ads; no telemetry, spyware or data gathering
- Familiar, efficient, fully customizable interface
- Support for full themes: total freedom for any element’s design
- Support for easily-created lightweight themes (skins)
- Smooth and speedy page drawing and script processing
- Superior gradients and fonts
- Will continue to support NPAPI plugins like Silverlight, Flash and Java
- Support for a growing number of Pale Moon exclusive extensions
- Extensive and growing support for existing web standards
This browser, even though fairly close to Gecko-based browsers like Mozilla Firefox and SeaMonkey in the way it works, is based on a different layout engine and offers a different set of features. It aims to provide close adherence to a balanced set of official, common-sense web standards and specifications in its implementation (with minimal compromise), and purposefully excludes a number of features to strike a balance between general use, performance, and technical advancements on the Web.
Pale Moon will continue to provide grouped navigation buttons of a decent size, a bookmarks toolbar that is enabled by default, tabs next to page content by default (easily switchable) and not in the least a functional status bar and more freedom in customization , to name a few things.

Portable versions
You’ve enjoyed Pale Moon at home, or at the office. You’ve wondered if you could use it elsewhere: in a library, on a public computer, in a cybercafГ©. You need something portable, that is as simple as plugging in your USB stick and running your favorite browser, with all your bookmarks and passwords at your fingertips? Then here is the answer: Pale Moon Portable!
Following the trend of other browsers, a portable installation has been created, which, thanks to winPenPack’s X-launcher that the portable launcher is based on, is completely self-contained. Nothing is stored on the host computer; your bookmarks, passwords, history, downloads, etc. stay neatly where they belong: on your stick.
Note: these portables are not meant to have file/URL associations or integration with the desktop. Their settings cater specifically to use on multiple hosts, run from removable media.
If you require desktop integration of any kind (including pinned taskbar entries, launching a mail application from mailto: links, remembering default download locations, etc.), it is recommended that you do not use Pale Moon Portable, but the normal desktop version instead! Pale Moon portable has been specifically designed to take with you on removable media with high wear and slow access, and its default settings reflect this. Using it on a stationary computer has a number of drawbacks and is not recommended.

How do I use this?
Three simple steps:
- Download the Pale Moon Portable file (below)
- Extract the contents of the file to your USB stick in a folder of your choice:
Run the .EXE file and tell it where to unpack (should be an empty or new folder) - Run palemoon-portable.exe (not palemoon.exe) in the location you unpacked to
That’s it! Simple enough?
The first time you run Pale Moon Portable, it may take a fairly long time to load, because it creates a new personal profile on your USB stick for you. This can take some time, also depending on the speed of your stick — up to 30 seconds, usually. After that, it will be much faster to start.
Of course, you don’t have to use a USB stick; any writable medium would work : External harddisk, a networked drive, even an MP3 player if it allows you to access it as a drive in Windows.
Do note however that Pale Moon Portable doesn’t run from read-only media like CD-ROM or DVD-ROM; it needs write access to the location it is run from.

Pale Moon for Mac OSX 24.7.1
Forum rules
Important note:
The Mac OSX version of Pale Moon is provided by various people and is not official or in any way organized at this moment. Your assistance in bringing this build to fruition is greatly appreciated, but you can expect there to be bugs and problems as long as we don’t have a maintainer or official builds!
Any specific bugs you find that don’t have their own topic yet: please make a new topic; one bug per topic please to keep things organized.
Please also note that these builds are currently created by various independent Mac OS X people and not by our core team; core devs will likely not be able to provide insight or assistance due to lack of Mac hardware and OS/build knowledge for Mac. You’ll have to solve the issues among yourselves.

A very first build of Pale Moon for Mac OSX is now available, thanks to cyansmoker, our Linux maintainer
Since this is a first build, you may have stability issues and the theme may not exactly be what you would expect from Pale Moon.
Please note that this build is supplied as a dmg, for 64-bit Mac OSX only. OSX requirement is 10.8.3 or later (if I understood correctly).
Please correct me if I’m wrong in any of this — I haven’t been able to personally test this since I don’t have the hardware for it

Thanks a lot. Version number is different but is it the same as 24.8.0b1 we got here? Is it safe to install 24.7.1 over that one?
update: installed it with no problems. Seems like the same version.

Yes, the status itself works fine with my iMac running OS X 10.9.4, although the status appears in the lower left hand corner in a small pop-up window rather than in the status bar itself. I do not see status bar options listed.
The status pop-up window appears whenever the cursor passes onto a link or browser operations occur, whether or not the «View Status Bar» option is selected. The width of the status pop-up window changes to accommodate the information contained therein. The area within the status bar remains blank, therefore I leave the status bar turned off, as the status pop-up window is always active.
As far as I can tell, everything works. It works with Java 7 Update 67 and installed digital certificates and the British English language pack and spellchecking dictionary too.

I gave this a go at work today (where, much to my displeasure, I must use a Mac (running OS X 10.9.4 as I recall)) and it worked as expected other than the missing status bar stuff. I installed the Status-4-Evar extension to restore this functionality for the moment, with no ill effects that I could see.
Thanks a lot for widening the reach of my favourite browser. 🙂

I uninstalled Firefox and the small problems I had are gone. It’s working just fine, the only problem seems to be the Status Bar which works but probably isn’t well integrated, and cannot be configured. I also hope you could keep up with the Windows version with a nice auto-updater.
What a breath of fresh air in the annoying MacOS X!
update: Sync also does not seem to work.

I just came across this thread with respect to the Adobe PDF plug-ins: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4751. I think that the issue that I mentioned with respect to the non-functionality of the Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in Version 10.1.10 may be more of an Adobe bug than a problem with the OS X version of PM. I have adopted the suggested solution of setting Application Preferences to open PDF content with the stand-alone Adobe Acrobat application and that works fine. It is really a more satisfactory option than viewing PDF content in a browser window anyway.
This first release of PM 24.7.1 for OS X is excellent and I am very pleased with it.

I am so glad to see Pale Moon for OSX at last. Will we be getting a version of the migration assistant? I’d like to move over from Firefox but I’ve got a lot of saved stuff that needs to come with me.

Great to see Pale Moon now available for MacOS; thanks, cyansmoker. Working fine so far.
One puzzlement, however: Is the name Pale Moon (as on the project home page, forum page, etc.), or Palemoon (the name on the icon of the application, also the name that shows in the Application menu on the menu bar – though elsewhere in the program it shows as Pale Moon)?
Also, I note that the .dmg of the program, when mounted, shows a Firefox volume icon.
And the application icon is kind of huge – I guess it uses every last available pixel? Anyway, it would look better in the Dock if it were a little smaller – matching the size of the other application icons.

How am I just now noticing this?
Can this also be installed on iPhones/iPads, or is this for Mac desktops and laptops only?
