The supported password-change protocols are:

1. The NetUserChangePassword protocol
2. The NetUserSetInfo protocol
3. The Kerberos change-password protocol (IETF Internet Draft Draft-ietf-cat-kerb-chg-password-02.txt) [port 464]
4. Kerberos set-password protocol (IETF Internet Draft Draft-ietf-cat-kerberos-set-passwd-00.txt) [port 464]
5. Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) write-password attribute (if 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer [SSL] is used)
6. XACT-SMB for pre-Microsoft Windows NT (LAN Manager) compatibility

Change-password operations require that the user’s current password be known before the change is allowed. Set-password operations don’t have this requirement, but are controlled by the Reset Password permissions on the account.

When you’re using LDAP (method 5), the domain controller and the client must both be able to use 128-bit SSL to protect the connection. If the domain controller isn’t configured for SSL or if appropriately long keys aren’t available, the password-change write is denied.

An Active Directory domain controller listens for change-password requests on all of these protocols.

As stated earlier in this article, different protocols are used in different circumstances. For example:

• Interoperable Kerberos clients use the Kerberos protocols. UNIX-based systems with MIT Kerberos version 5 1.1.1 can change user passwords in a Windows-based domain by using the Kerberos change-password protocol (method 3).
• When users change their own passwords by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then clicking Change Password, Windows NT up to Windows 2003 the NetUserChangePassword mechanism (method 1) is used if the target is a domain. From Windows Vista onwards, the Kerberos change password protocol is used for domain accounts. If the target is a Kerberos realm, the Kerberos change-password protocol (method 3) is used.
• Requests to change a password from computers that are running Microsoft Windows 95/Microsoft Windows 98 use XACT-SMB (method 6).
• A program that uses the ChangePassword method on the Active Directory Services Interface (ADSI) IaDSUser interface first tries to change the password by using LDAP (method 5), and then by using the NetUserChangePassword protocol (method 1).
• A program that uses the SetPassword method on the ADSI IaDSUser interface first tries to change the password by using LDAP (method 5), then the Kerberos set-password protocol (method 4), and then the NetUserSetInfo protocol (method 2).
• The Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in uses ADSI operations for setting user passwords.

Если вы забыли пароль администратора AD, то для смены пароля администратора Active Directory в Windows Server 2003 потребуется несколько шагов.
Нам потребуется учетная запись локального администратора (как ее получить, если ее нет или она тоже забыта, я рассказывал тут), но тут есть одна тонкость. Если после смены локального администратора перезагрузиться в обычном режиме, то локальный администратор может быть выключен применившимися политиками безопасности. Поэтому, после смены пароля локального администратора, перезагружаемся сразу в режиме Режиме Восстановления Службы Каталогов.
И утилиты, поставляемые Microsoft в их Resource Kit: SRVANY and INSTSRV. Их можно загрузить тут.

Перезагружаем Контроллер домена.
Во время начальной загрузки системы, нажимаем F8.
Выбираем Режим Восстановления Службы Каталогов (Directory Service Restore Mode).
Устанавливаем SRVANY. Эта утилита может запустить любую программу в виде сервиса.
Для этого копируем instsrv.exe и srvany.exe в систему (скажем в папку c:\temp\).
Далее в ту же папку копируем cmd.exe из c:\Windows\System32
Запускаем консоль и выполняем команду:

c:\temp\instsrv.exe PassRecovery «c:\temp\srvany.exe»

Теперь srvany зарегистрирована как сервис, но нам надо ее настроить.
Для этого открываем редактор реестра (regedit)
Переходим к ветке
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PassRecovery
Создаем новый раздел Parameters и добавляем в него два новых параметра:

Имя: Application
Тип: REG_SZ (string)
Значение: c:\temp\cmd.exe

Имя: AppParameters
Тип: REG_SZ (string)
Значение: /k net user administrator QWErty123 /domain

где administrator — это имя администратора домена, а QWErty123 — это пароль.

Теперь, открываем Панель управления->Администрирование->Службы (Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services) и открываем вкладку свойств PassRecovery.

Проверяем, что режим запуска стоит автоматически.
Переходим на вкладку Вход в систему (Log On) и включаем опцию Разрешить взаимодействие с рабочим столом (Allow service to interact with the desktop).

Теперь Перезагружаем Windows в обычном режиме, SRVANY запустит команду NET USER и сменит пароль доменного администратора.

После этого заходим в систему, открываем консоль и выполняем две команды, чтобы удалить добавленную службу:

net stop PassRecovery
sc delete PassRecovery

Теперь удаляем папку c:\temp

Все. Пароль доменного администратора сменен.

1. Log into system with the old password, press «Ctrl + Alt + Delete» key.

2. Click on Change a Password .

3. Type in the old password and the new password to change it.

Tip 2: Change Server 2003 administrator password remotely

If you are accessing the server via remote desktop, you can’t change the server windows password by pressing the Ctrl +Alt + Del key, because it will change your local computer’s Windows Security, not the server computer’s password.

To reset Windows Server 2003 administrator password remotely:

1. Connect to Server computer from remote desktop.

2 . Click on Start в†’ Windows Security в†’ Change a Password , to change Windows Server password.

3. Or press Ctrl + Alt + End key on the remote desktop.

Case 2: Have got into system but forgot current password

Tip 3: Reset Windows Server 2003 password with command

If you forgot your Windows Server 2003 current password, but still can get into with other account that has administrator privilege, you can reset the Windows Server password through Command Prompt.

1. Get into the server 2003 computer with another account.

2. Press Windows + R , type in «cmd» on the text box, and then press Enter to open Command Prompt.

3. Type in the command: net user , and press Enter to execute it.

Case 3: Forgot administrator password and locked out computer

Tip 4: Retrieve Server 2003 password with Offline NT tool

If you forgot your Windows Server password and are locked out of operating system, you unable to reset or remove Windows Server 2003 password with the methods above. You have to use a tool to help you.

Here you can use the Offline NT password tool to retrieve Windows Server 2003 password freely. But the operating steps may be a little complicate and difficult.

1. Download NT Password & Registry Editor to create a bootable disk with CD/USB.

2. Take the bootable disk insert into your server computer, and set it to boot from the removable device.

3. After booting successfully, remove or reset Windows Server 2003 password following the instructions on the black and white screen.

If the methods above don’t work for you, don’t be frustrated, go on and try with the method below.

1. Download and install Windows Password Tuner Utimate on an accessible PC.

2. Run Cocosenor Password program on the PC now.

3. Insert a USB or CD into the PC.

If insert a USB, click on USB device , and then click on Begin burning .

If insert a CD, click on CD/DVD , and then click on Begin burning .

4. After burning successfully, take the USB or CD insert into your Server computer.

5. Set the Server computer to boot from the removable device (The USB or CD disk). Click here to see how to set a computer boot from CD-ROM.

6. If went successfully, the password recovery program will come up in a while.

You just need to click on Reset Password button, and click on Yes , your Windows Server 2003 password would be set to Cocosenor@2003 .

Unplug the removable device, and click on Reboot button to restart your server computer.

7. After go to the logon screen, type in the new password «Cocosenor@2003» to sign in windows.
