If you ever wanted to greatly improve usability of your QuickTime Player, then Perian for Mac is perfect solution for you! Because Perian is a plugin for your Quick Time player, it does not have its own multimedia playback interface. However, you can access its configuration screen that will control how all these additional videos and audio formats can be controlled. This includes very little tweaks, mostly focused on how audio codecs will be decoded on your Mac (which format, how to play Soft Sounds), enable or disable external subtitles, easy way check for updates (which can be even automatic) and uninstall the app with a single click of a mouse button.

Как он работает? выбираю файл ави или мкв нажимаю- Perian-открыть в QuickTime и ничего не открывается пишет нет кодека. Че за фигня.

+/- 1 отличная прога, но с ее помощью QTP не стал показывать файлы WMV
для полного комфорта пришлось ставить Flip4mac

I long hosted Perian on my own server using SVN. I no longer used SVN for anything and I wanted to shutdown the SVN repositories on my server but I don’t want Perian’s source to be lost to time. So I did a quick SVN->GIT conversion of the repositories and moved them here to Github. I didn’t bother with converting the authors from the SVN usernames (which were local to my server) to name/emails. In the early days of the repository, we did build FFmpeg binaries and include them in the repository. I explicitly excluded these binaries in this conversion so those cloning it won’t waste space/bandwidth on these unused binaries.
I’ve split out the mirrors of the source for libebml, libmatroska, and ffmpeg into separate repositories. The directory structure of SVN allowed them to be in the same repository easily but this structure is not appropriate for GIT repositories.
I’ve not built Perian in a long time and the process of this conversion is no exception. It was designed for a much older version of OS X than is current so it may no longer build anymore. If you want to attempt to build Perian, you will first need clone the aforementioned repositories as well and put all in the same directory. You will need to remove the perian- prefix from the directory names when you clone the other repositories. Then you will need to also clone a52codec and put it as a52codec within the perian directory. Good luck.

Important Note: Perian is no longer under development and does not work with QuickTime 10 or above. However, it still works with QuickTime 7.6.6.
If QuickTime 7.6.6 is your default media player, then Perian is the tool you need to make sure it plays any media file type you want. It will not work with QuickTime 10 or above and since its no longer under development, never will.
This discreet little component adds support to a wide range of formats including MKV, FLV, DivX and WMA or even less known formats like Xiph Vorbis or Flash ADCPM. It also offers subtitle support for SSA and SRT so you can enjoy films in their original version in Quicktime. Users also like that Perian offers AVI support for H.264 and audio files like MP3 or AAC.
Perian is very easy to install and works automatically once it’s set up. While VLC Media Player is usually the recommended media player on Mac because of its wide support for all sorts of media file types, having Quicktime with Perian is also an excellent choice to play any sorts of media.
An excellent and free QuickTime component, Perian lets you enjoy almost any media format, including subtitles and a number of audio files. Highly recommended.
