PhpStorm is an IDE (integrated development environment) specifically built for PHP developers. PhpStorm takes away as much of the necessary mundane programming tasks as possible, so that programmers can concentrate on their application.

How is PhpStorm useful?

PHP developers will be aware of how inconsistent PHP can be when it comes to naming conventions. Autocomplete takes the guess work out of this, while also providing the same support for all the other languages a PHP developer is likely to use such as HTML, CSS, Javascript and even Coffeescript. It also allows developers to navigate code easier, refactor code without breaking anything and comes with built-in debugging tools to help developers track down the problem when something does go wrong. It helps cut down on time spent navigating through large code bases and lets developers find and fix the code they want quickly.

Conclusion

PhpStorm is not free and can actually be quite costly when there are less fully featured, but free alternatives. Advanced configuration

Besides the standard options available, PhpStorm enables you to perform low-level configuration of the underlying platform and the Java runtime.

This may lead to unexpected problems and make your PhpStorm installation inoperable if you are not sure what you are doing. Contact JetBrains Support for instructions regarding the options and values that might help you with whatever issue you are trying to solve.

JVM options

PhpStorm runs on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which has various options that control its performance. The default options used to run PhpStorm are specified in the following file:

Do not change JVM options in the default file, because it is replaced when PhpStorm is updated. Moreover, in case of macOS, editing this file violates the application signature.

Configure JVM options

Do one of the following to create a copy of the default file with JVM options in the configuration directory that will override the original file:

From the main menu, select Help | Edit Custom VM Options .

If you do not have any project open, on the Welcome screen, click Configure and then Edit Custom VM Options .

If you cannot start PhpStorm, manually copy the default file with JVM options to the PhpStorm configuration directory.

If you do not have write access to the PhpStorm configuration directory, you can add the PHPSTORM_VM_OPTIONS environment variable to specify the location of the file with your preferred JVM options. This file will override both the original default file and the copy located in the PhpStorm configuration directory.

If you are using the Toolbox App, it manages the installation and configuration directory and lets you configure JVM options for every IDE instance. Open the Toolbox App, click the screw nut icon for the necessary instance, and select Settings .

Common options

The default values of the JVM options should be optimal in most cases. The following are the most commonly modified ones:

Limits the maximum memory heap size that the JVM can allocate for running PhpStorm. The default value depends on the platform. If you are experiencing slowdowns, you may want to increase this value, for example, to set the value to 2048 megabytes, change this option to -Xmx2048m .

-Xms Specifies the initial memory allocated by the JVM for running PhpStorm. The default value depends on the platform. It is usually set to about half of the maximum allowed memory (-Xmx), for example, -Xms1024m . -XX:NewRatio Specifies the ratio between the size of the young and old generation of the heap. In most cases, a ratio between 2 and 4 is recommended. This will set the size of the young generation to be 1/2 to 1/4 of the old generation correspondingly, which is good when you are often working on one project and only a few files at a time. However, if you are constantly opening new files and switching between several projects, you may need to increase the young generation. In this case, try setting -XX:NewRatio=1 , which will make the young generation as large as the old generation, allowing objects to remain in the young generation for longer.

PhpStorm enables you to customize various platform-specific properties, such as the path to user-installed plugins and the maximum supported file size. The default properties used to run PhpStorm are specified in the following file:

Register PhpStorm

You can evaluate PhpStorm for up to 30 days. After that, buy and register a license to continue using the product.

Do one of the following to open the Licenses dialog:

From the main menu, select Help | Register

On the Welcome screen, click Help | Manage License

Select how you want to register PhpStorm or a plugin that requires a license:

If you are using two-factor authentication for your JetBrains Account, specify the generated app password instead of the primary JetBrains Account password.

Register using an activation code.

You can get an activation code when you purchase a license for the corresponding product.

When performing silent install or managing PhpStorm installations on multiple machines, you can set the JETBRAINS_LICENSE_SERVER environment variable to point the installation to the Floating License Server URL.

Alternatively, you can set the Floating License Server URL by adding the -DJETBRAINS_LICENSE_SERVER JVM option.

PhpStorm detects the system proxy URL during initial startup and uses it for connecting to the JetBrains Account and Floating License Server. To override the URL of the system proxy, add the -Djba.http.proxy JVM option. Specify the proxy URL as the host address and optional port number: proxy-host[:proxy-port] . For example: -Djba.http.proxy=http://my-proxy.com:4321 .

If you want to disable proxy detection entirely and always connect directly, set the property to -Djba.http.proxy=direct .

Early Access Program

Pre-release builds of PhpStorm that are part of the Early Access Program are shipped with a 30-days license. Log in with your JetBrains Account to start using PhpStorm EAP.

For authorization, you can use either your JetBrains Account directly or your Google, GitHub, GitLab, or BitBucket account. You can also create a new JetBrains Account if you don’t have one yet.

If you’re using ToolBox to install JetBrains products and already logged in to your JetBrains Account there, PhpStorm will automatically log you into the same account.

Login options

Click Log in to JetBrains Account . You will be automatically redirected to the JetBrains Account website.

On the website, log in using your JetBrains Account credentials.

Once you’ve successfully logged in, you can start using PhpStorm EAP by clicking Get Started .

If you want to participate in EAP-related activities and provide your feedback, make sure to select the Send me EAP-related feedback requests and surveys option.

Click the Create an account link. You will be automatically redirected to the JetBrains Account website. Follow the instructions on the website to register a new JetBrains Account.

Once you’ve successfully logged in, you can start using PhpStorm EAP by clicking Get Started .

If you want to participate in EAP-related activities and provide your feedback, make sure to select the Send me EAP-related feedback requests and surveys option.

Click the icon of the service that you want to use for logging in. You will be redirected to the login page on the website of the selected service.

Once you’ve successfully logged in, you can start using PhpStorm EAP by clicking Get Started .

Log in with an authorization token

An authorization token is a way to log in to your JetBrains Account if your system doesn’t allow for redirection from the IDE directly, for example, due to your company’s security policy. PhpStorm recognizes when redirection to the JetBrains Account website is impossible. It enables you to copy a link to generate an authorization token manually.

Click Copy link and open the copied link in your browser.

Log in to your JetBrains Account to generate an authorization token. After that, copy the token, paste it to the IDE authorization token field and click Check token .

Once you’ve successfully logged in, you can start using PhpStorm EAP by clicking Get Started .
