Installing Pinta

Pinta can be installed on Linux, Mac, Windows, or *BSD. Due to this, there are multiple ways to install Pinta based on what you are using as your operating system.

This document will show you the multiple ways to install Pinta.

Installing Pinta on Ubuntu

Install Pinta from default Ubuntu repository

Pinta is available in default Ubuntu repository. You can install it using:

  • Click on Ubuntu Software Center from Launcher (left site icon panel).
  • At the top right input box type in: Pinta and press Enter.
  • Pinta is displayed in list bellow. Click on it and click the Install button.

But Pinta from default Ubuntu repository can be an old version, so you may want to install more recent version of Pinta from Pinta maintainers PPA repository. See below.

Install Pinta from Pinta maintainers PPA repository using terminal (for advanced users)

Open terminal with CTRL+ALT+T

First, install the latest version of Mono (version 6.10 or higher is strongly recommended)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pinta-maintainers/pinta-stable

Note: Instead of pinta-stable you can add pinta-daily if you like to test latest and the greatest Pinta, but it may be buggy.

Update system package lists:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install pinta

Installing Pinta on *BSD

FreeBSD and DragonFly BSD

Pinta is available in FreeBSD and DragonFly BSD ports.

You can install the binary package using:

sudo pkg install pinta

or compile it using:

cd /usr/ports/graphics/pinta && sudo make install clean

OpenBSD

Pinta is available in OpenBSD ports.

You can install the binary package using:

sudo pkg_add pinta

or compile it using:

cd /usr/ports/graphics/pinta && sudo make install

Using the Tarball

A tarball is like a ZIP file. It is a single file with many files inside it. Like a ZIP file, it has to be extracted before you can use the files in them.

First, you must download the tarball. Head on over to the Download page and click on the Download link under Tarball. Download the file where ever you’d like, just be sure you remember where.

Second, we need to extract it. You can either use your mouse to right-click on the Tarball file and select ‘Extract here’ or you can use the terminal if you are more comfortable with that.

Here is the command to extract the files via the terminal, be sure you are in the same folder as the tarball:

How to Install Pinta on Ubuntu & Linux Mint

Last updated March 18, 2020 By Abhishek Prakash 6 Comments

Pinta is a free and open source drawing application which is very popular among Linux users. It won’t be incorrect to term it as an open source alternative to Microsoft Paint. Pinta is available for all major platforms such as Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.

While GIMP is popular as full featured image editing software, Pinta is more of a paint and drawing tool. I have used it extensively in my tutorials for drawing arrows and curves on the screenshots and I can say that it’s my favorite drawing app in Linux.

New features in Pinta 1.6

After over an year, Pinta has released version 1.6, fixing over 50 bugs and introducing some new features. New features are as following:

  • Line tool now supports drawing curves and arrows
  • Shapes can be edited even after being drawn
  • All shape tools now support drawing dashed lines
  • All selection tools now support the Union, Exclude, Xor, and Intersection modes
  • Add-in manager now consists of ‘add ins’
  • New options in command line usage

New version also fixes the annoying bug where you cannot open a file with Pinta in right click menu option. You can read all the changes in the release note.

Install Pinta 1.6 in Ubuntu and Linux Mint

Pinta 1.6 was released a few years ago and now it is available in Ubuntu 16.04, 18.04 and other versions.

Just make sure to have universe repository enabled and then install it from the software center:

Or you can use the following command to install it:

To download the source code or to get the installation files for Windows and Mac OS X, check the download page of Pinta.

Pinta is a free and open source image editor designed for non-professional users that are looking for a simple drawing alternative to GIMP. Pinta image editor includes all basic drawing tools (paintbrush, pencil, shapes), the ability to drawing freehand and common image-editing features and effects. It also works with multiple layers.

This simple image editor can run on Linux, BSD, OS X and Windows and it’s a perfect Paint.net alternative on Linux.

Install Pinta Image Editor on Ubuntu 16.04/14.04

The latest stable version, Pinta 1.6, was released on Mar 2, 2015. To install it, open up a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run this command:

For Linux beginners, the double ampersand tells bash, the default shell program on Linux, to run the next command only after the previous command is complete. The above command will install Pinta 1.6 from Ubuntu software repository.

If you are the kind of person who likes living on the bleeding edge, you can install the daily build of Pinta (v1.7) through official PPA (Personal Package Archive). Execute these two lines of command in terminal.

You can also install Pinta on Linux Mint, Elementary OS using this PPA as these two distributions are based on Ubuntu.

Once installed, start it from Unity Dash.
