How to Extract Packages (PKG) files on a Mac OS

Software for Apple’s OS X platform comes in package files, and these packages make installing software extremely simple. This was one of the advances that came with the Unix-core OS X is based on. Users should always check to make sure that they know what’s in a package they’ve downloaded before installing it. Generally this can be done with the Mac Finder.

Mac Finder isn’t always capable of reading the contents of a package file, which requires users to rely instead on the command line to view what’s inside. Additionally packages can sometimes become corrupt or you might need to extract a single file from a package for some other reason. The same command can be used to accomplish this.

Viewing Package Contents

Open the Mac Finder from the dock, navigate to /Applications/Utilities/ and then launch the Terminal.

Use the following command pointed at the package you want to view the contents of:

pkgutil –expand thePackage.pkg /destination

cd /destination

Replace thePackage.pkg with the package name and /destination with where you put it. For instance, if you wanted to work on the Desktop with a package called volume.pkg:

These files can now be examined, manipulated or thrown in the Trash once you’re done with them. If you wanted to keep only .gif files from a package, for example, you could make a directory then move them to it before deleting all of the others:

mv *.gif ./Images

OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard was the first OS X version with optional support for a 64-bit kernel, allowing booting either with a 32-bit or 64-bit kernel. However, Apple did not support booting the 64-bit kernel in Macs that shipped with EFI32 firmware, even if they had 64-bit processors capable of running the 64-bit kernel. When Apple dropped the 32-bit kernel entirely from OS X, starting with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, EFI32 Macs no longer had an Apple-supported mechanism to boot newer OS X versions.
OS X 10.11 El Capitan includes rootless security known as System Integrity Protection. It makes sure that System file permissions are automatically protected, and updated during Software Updates. The Repair Permissions function is no longer available and access to system files that we need to use in this guide may be locked.

For those who have 2006/2007 Mac Pros, you may be best suited to using Mr. Zarniwoop’s Thread here. The MCPF and OSXE projects are not affiliated with them. We will not contact them either. OS X Extractor 1.4.

is mostly web based. It is a 4 MB package file (.pkg) that will download only what the user actually specifies from the OS X Hackers Server. This means that most updates are done on the server side by developers. Users can use the 4 MB .pkg to update with certain packages. Pacifist app is still supported and can download the package upon extracting the files or installing them manually from this app.

Known Bugs:
Some Macs may fail installation even if they meet the minimum requirements.
OS X Hackers app may crash upon starting up. A workaround would be to Go to folder «

/Library/Caches» and delete the JN4.OS-X-Hackers and in folder «

/Library/Preferences/» delete Johnson Network 4.2.OS-X-Hackers.plist
Some users may get greyed out option for their selected OS X. A workaround would be to create a touch command in Applications/OS X Hackers Patch Files/.Developers/ called in accordance to your intended OS (sierra.eboot, escap.eboot, yos.eboot, mav,eboot, ml.eboot)

AutoPatch

The AutoPatch is designed to perform most of the manual tasks in patching the OS Installer. During the Installation process, the following is performed to the chosen partition or external storage device

Known Bugs:

◦ Kernels for Sierra may not be included.
◦ Other Kexts within the OS X Hackers Patch Files are not added with this version of the feature but will need to be added into the Installation Drive
◦ No script was included for graphics kexts. This would need to be installed manually after installing the OS.

macOS Sierra

This OS can be used with the patches and is detected by macOS Extractor. ONLY newer Unsupported Mac can install this version of macOS at this time. Current El Capitan issues for these unsupported Chipsets are still a major problem in Sierra.

Requirements:

◦ Early-2008 or newer Mac Pro, iMac, or MacBook Pro (MacPro 3,1 and 4,1, iMac 8,1 and 9,1, MacBook Pro 4,1, 5,1 5,2, 5,3, 5,4, and 5,5)
◦ 2008 or newer MacBook Air or Aluminum Unibody MacBook (MacBookAir 2,1, MacBook 5,1)
◦ Early-2009 or newer Mac Mini or white MacBook (Macmini 3,1, MacBook 5,2)-Early-2008 or newer Xserve (Xserve 2,1)

Machines that ARE NOT supported:

◦ 2006-2007 Mac Pros, iMacs, MacBook Pros, and Mac Minis (MacPro 1,1 and 2,1, iMac 4,1, 5,1, 5,2, 6,1 and 7,1, MacBook Pro 1,1, 2,1, and 3,1, Macmini 1,1 and 2,1)
*The 2007 iMac 7,1 is compatible if the CPU is upgraded to a Penryn-based Core 2 Duo, such as a T9300.
◦ 2006-2008 MacBooks (MacBook 2,1 3,1 and 4,1)

MacBook2,1, MacBook3,1 and iMac5,1 do NOT have newer SSE 4-compatible CPUs and will probably be dropped after El Capitan.

Known Bugs:

◦ This OS dropped support for Wi-Fi cards (BCM4321) used in most 2008 and some 2009 Macs. A hardware upgrade is required to get Wi-Fi functionality on these models.
◦ iMac8,1 — Volume control for the Built-In Audio device may work improperly or not at all.
◦ Macbook5,2 — The trackpad is not configurable, it is detected as a regular mouse instead limiting multitouch gestures.

El Capitan

This OS is supported for all unsupported Macs but requires more manual effort. The Intel Chipsets in most models are not supported and can be troublesome getting the Beta USB Kexts to work while the SIP setting with the Bootloader is still present.
We are actively working on a solution to permanently set SIP to 0x67 within the NVRAM however compiling issue between Microsoft Visual Studio IDE and The Netwide Assembler. This issue affected both MacPostFactor and macOS Extractor 1.3 and newer

Graphics

All Graphical Kernel Extension have been updated with more workarounds to the lack of OpenGL 4 Support in OS X Mavericks and newer. New Brightness Control Application and Maintenance scripts have been added to the installer in order to speed up these older models. New Quicktime and Sarafi Extensions are updated to allow video playback in many different formats.
Sleep is still not supported due to its connection with WindowServer however the NoSleep Extension is active within each Graphical Kext Installer.

Note: Power Consumption has been reported as a new issue. Battery life in unsupported Mac Laptops will likely decrease significantly especially with non-Apple removeable Batteries.

The Beta OpenGL Frameworks for Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, and Sierra have been depreciated. No further development will be made until the Kernel can be reverse engineered to fix the WindowServer crashes.
OpenGL Frameworks for Mountain Lion are still supported and will remain active throughout future security updates.
