Подключив ПК к телевизору и установив специальное ПО, мы получаем совершенно иное качество просмотра и управления своей медиаколлекцией. Компания Microsoft не могла, конечно, остаться в стороне от столь модного тренда и предлагает для этого собственную версию программы.

История Windows Media Center началась еще в 2002 году, с тех пор приложение неоднократно усовершенствовалось и перерабатывалось, приобретая новые возможности. Кроме того, его функциональность может расширяться с помощью специальных дополнений, о некоторых из них мы сегодня и поговорим.

MacroTube

Плагин добавляет в Windows Media Center поддержку наиболее востребованных онлайновых видеосервисов – YouTube, Dailymotion и MSN Soapbox.

Вы можете просто просмотреть самые новые или популярные ролики или воспользоваться функцией поиска. Результаты сортируются по рейтингу, дате, количеству просмотров или релевантности.

Media Browser

Данный плагин отображает мультимедийные файлы в визуально привлекательном, дружественном к пользователю интерфейсе, с показом обложек и метаданных.

Чтобы информация загружалась и выводилась на русском языке, необходимо скачать еще один небольшой файл. Найти его можно на форуме, посвященном программе.

Полученный файл KinopoiskMetadataProvider.dll нужно поместить в папку C:ProgramDataMediaBrowserPlugins. Все видеофайлы должны иметь русскоязычное название, полностью совпадающее с названием фильма. В результате если все сделано правильно, медиабиблиотека совершенно преобразится.

Теперь на экране отображается дополнительная информация о кинолентах, в том числе обложка, краткая аннотация, рейтинг, жанр, продолжительность и даже фотографии актеров. Плагин Media Browser имеет несколько режимов воспроизведения и множество настроек, с помощью которых вы сможете отрегулировать его на свой вкус.

Media Center RSS Reader

Благодаря домашнему медиацентру можно не только развлекаться, но и получать полезную информацию и свежие новости. Поможет нам в этом программа Media Center RSS Reader. Несмотря на свой бесплатный статус, она требует активации. Для этого необходимо заполнить на сайте разработчика специальную форму, после чего на вашу электронную почту придет письмо с кодом.

Для отображения RSS-потоков приложение использует движок Internet Exporer, поэтому вы можете просматривать только те фиды, на которые подписались с помощью данного браузера. Нажав на название нужного канала, мы попадаем на страницу со списком новостей и далее уже переходим к просмотру конкретной статьи.

Эта программа выводит на экран подробную информацию о погоде. После установки ее ярлык появляется в меню «Дополнения Windows Media Center». Для получения прогноза необходимо указать в настройках свой город и отметить опцию Metric Scale, чтобы данные отображались в принятых у нас единицах измерения. Сведения предоставляются службой The Weather Channel.

RadioTime

С помощью этого дополнения можно слушать в Windows Media Center тысячи онлайновых радиостанций. После установки программы в меню появится новый пункт RadioTime, при активации которого открывается список доступных станций, разбитый на категории.

Приятно, что почти все они проиллюстрированы логотипами. Более того, для ряда из них предлагаются программа передач и подробная информация о транслируемых шоу. Понравившиеся станции можно занести в «Избранное», однако для этого понадобится бесплатная регистрация на сайте.

If you were to ask us what’s missing from Windows Media Center, we’d say, mainly, streaming media like Hulu and YouTube, and killer local file handling. 5. Kill commercials, inside or outside WMC

If you wanted commercials, you’d watch live TV. If you want them gone from your media center experience, and you don’t mind the subtle karmic shift in doing so, there’s apps to tackle that, both inside and outside WMC. Lifextender does a great job of automating commercial stripping, but hasn’t been updated to run all that well in Windows 7 yet—or so our commenters have noted (it should work fine for Vista and earlier Windows editions). On the other hand, DVRMSToolbox is a stand-alone program, so those with Windows Media Center setups where getting outside the main media window isn’t hard can bulk-strip their commercials. 4. Convert recordings for iPods

We’re really glad DVRMSToolbox has gotten updates and attention, because that means it can feed our other favorite non-plug-in WMC tool: iPodifier . Used together, they can strip WMC’s video files of their copy protection, kill commercials, and, most helpfully, convert those files to a format friendly to iPods and iPhones and patch them right into iTunes for syncing. About a year ago I evaluated WMC thoroughly — we were coming from BeyondTV with analog cable, ready to make the digital cable + HDTV switch. The big problem is that WMC doesn’t support digital cable (yes, I know about cable cards, but the interwebs are full of people that have tried and failed at that solution).

After much agonizing/analysis, we decided on the Tivo HD with dual cable-cards, and we haven’t regretted it. The interface is seamless, the reliability is perfect, the maintenance is zero, and even with the subscription charges, the break-even point versus buying even a mid-priced HTPC ($600) is five years out (at which point, we’d be due for a new PC anyway).

So here’s the feature-by-feature comparison of Tivo to WMC features from this post:

This isn’t meant to come off as trolling («get yer Tivo out of arr WMC post!»), but if someone asked me which to buy, I would tell them to buy the Tivo HD. OTOH, if you’ve already set up a WMC, by all means take advantage of the great power-ups of this article.
