Пробую Postbox на роль почтового клиента

Вчера в обзоре «десять программ для бизнеса под Mac» попался на глаза неизвестный мне почтовый клиент Postbox, который из всей десятки почему-то заинтриговал больше всего. Скачал, поставил, пробую.

Я и почта

Электронной почтой я пользуюсь относительно мало, в день пишу меньше одного сообщения, если усреднить. Читать приходится больше, штук по 10 в день, что тоже не особо много. В основном пользуюсь GMail в браузере, он у меня постоянно открыт. Эппловский Mail используется только для рабочей переписки с немногочисленными постоянными клиентами. Подключен по IMAP к тому же Google Mail для своего домена. Не то чтобы Mail меня не устраивал, но впечатления не самые лучшие — режим «организовать по темам» неудобен, они разворачиваются и сворачиваются, что меня раздражает, мне привычнее и удобнее так, как это сделано в GMail, где вся ветка переписки идет одной сплошной «портянкой». Также бывает тяжело найти отправленное или полученное письмо с нужным вложением — люди совершенно перестали указывать осмысленные темы для писем.

Postbox

Программа представляет собой клиент для почты (IMAP/POP3), RSS и новостных групп (NNTP), последние два пункта мне ни к чему, их я рассматривать не буду.

Сделан Postbox на движке Mozilla, дополнения и словари к нему подходят от Thunderbird, если я правильно понял. Наверно, было бы правильно сравнивать Postbox как раз с Thunderbird, но я последним никогда не пользовался, так что сличать буду с Apple Mail и своим пониманием прекрасного.

При установке Postbox ловко импортировал настройки из Mail, подгрузил по IMAP заголовки с Google Mail, можно работать. Все особенности и достоинства Postbox можно изучить на сайте, а я пройдусь по основным, важным для меня лично. Для начала хорошие вещи.

• Индексация и удобный доступ к коллекциям вложений, картинок, ссылок, которые получены или отправлены по почте.
• Вкладки (табы), в которых можно открыть папки или упомянутые выше коллекции.
• Интеграция с адресной книгой, календарем iCal, iPhoto, Spotlight etc. Взаимопроникновение с системой довольно велико.
• Поддержка тегов, которые тут называются Topics и представляют собой отдельные коллекции, в которые можно помещать ветки сообщений.
• Сами ветки сообщений (Conversations), организованные по теме и контакту. Сделаны на манер GMail, то есть в них попадают и полученные, и отправленные сообщения.
• ToDo — флажок для сообщения, к которому предполагается вернуться позже. Можно «прикрепить» сообщения ToDo вверху списка, чтобы не затерялись.
• Есть поддержка публикаций в Facebook, Twitter и FriendFeed. Мне не особо требуется, но приятная фича.

Немного картинок не повредит, дальше продолжу о минусах и недостатках.

Postbox, главное окно после первого запуска, папка Inbox еще не загрузилась с сервера.

Ветке сообщений (Conversation) можно присвоить тему (темное окно). Список тем можно редактировать, разумеется. Справа виден список картинок в этой ветке.

Создание нового сообщения. Интерфейс несколько кондовый, зато есть быстрый доступ и поиск по вложениям, картинкам, ссылкам, контактам.

Деготь

Без недостатков не обошлось. Русского языка нет и с русским в Postbox вообще плохо. Для начала, Postbox Inc отдельно и заслуженно гордится возможностью редактировать отправленные или полученные сообщения. Бывает удобно — можно добавить какую-то заметку, изменить тему (Subject) и т.д. Вот только с русским языком, очевидно, не все так ровно.

Вполне читаемое сообщение становится вот таким при попытке редактирования.

Какие-то сообщения по-русски редактируются нормально, причем от кодировки это не зависит — пробовал редактировать письма в KOI-8R, Windows-1251, UTF-8. Всестороннего исследования я не проводил, но проблема характерна для писем, кодированных в BASE64 (Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64). Восьмибитные (Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit) письма в любой кодировке редактируются нормально.

Нет проверки правописания на русском языке, то есть Postbox не использует встроенные словари Mac OS, как и другие программы на Мозилле. Можно загрузить с сайта русский словарь от Thunderbird, но проверять можно либо русский, либо английский, никак не оба вместе, увы.

Со словарем появляется возможность включить в Postbox русский интерфейс, но переведен он далеко не весь, отсутствующие в Thunderbird строки интерфейса останутся на английском.

Вердикт

Я еще какое-то время «погоняю» Postbox параллельно с Mail и попытаюсь понять, стоит ли эта программа $40 и окупится ли её использование за счет экономии времени и/или нервов. Я, честно говоря, не люблю Mozilla на Mac OS, все-таки не родная это семейка для системы. Firefox использую из-за необходимых мне дополнений, а Thunderbird даже нелюбопытно было посмотреть. Так что пока у меня скептически-сдержанное отношение к Postbox, но пусть поживет пока.

The Image Scaling feature in Postbox 7 resizes large inline images with just a few clicks. Image scaling can be performed on a «per-image» basis, as opposed to the all or nothing approach found in some other email clients.

Since ISPs have size limits for messages sent through their servers (for example, Gmail places a 25MB limit), Postbox can be set to display a warning if you exceed a certain threshold. The message size indicator will display the total message size, including text and images.

Our Cloud File Sharing feature enables you to send links to your Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive files instead of sending the files themselves.

Simply drag and drop a file from your storage folder into the body of a message and a link to that file will be created automatically.

Gmail style mail client based on Thunderbird

Postbox is an intelligent, multi-language cross platform mail client that has clearly been inspired by Thunderbird.

Some say it’s a little «too» inspired by Thunderbird but the developers have only basically taken the core code behind it and expanded on it to make what some consider to be a superior mail client. There’s no doubt that Postbox features many useful tools that make organizing and tracking your e-mails very intuitive and version 2.0 has made it even better.

Features that particularly standout in Postbox are a slick, Apple Mail style interface, very fast searching for everything from messages to attachments, Gmail style conversation views, tabbed browsing of mail, categories and folders, to-do lists and integration with Address Book, iCal, iPhoto, Spotlight, and Quick Look. Postbox also works with third party apps such as OmniFocus and Things.

Setting-up Postbox is very straightforward. A wizard takes you through the entire import process and Postbox automatically determines connection settings for you. The great thing is Postbox is a lot simpler than Thunderbird and getting your webmail — such as Gmail or Yahoo e-mail onto your desktop — is extremely quick and painless. It can even retrieve your Facebook messages for you using a separate simple setup wizard. Once you’ve imported, Postbox works behind the scenes to catalog everything including every single bit of text, contact, address, link, picture, document and attachment. Within seconds, you should have a fully searchable and effectively backed-up copy of your e-mail on your hard drive.

Browsing images is a pleasure in Postbox and I liked the way you can scroll through every single image in your inbox in one go. Organizing your mail and work load using Postbox is refreshingly easy and reminds me of a more advanced version of Gmail. It does not however extract labels from Gmail which is a downside because it means reorganising your entire collection once again. You may also receive quite a bit of spam in Postbox because although it has it’s own spam filter, it doesn’t support more powerful solutions such as SpamSieve.

Postbox is one of the most intelligent e-mail clients you’re likely to try on Mac. The latest version is better than ever although now that Outlook is available on Mac in Office 2011, it may have to improve even further to attract more users.

Postbox now ships with 20 beautiful themes spread across light and dark modes. To select a new theme, click the Themes button in the toolbar, or select a theme from the View > Theme menu.

The «Default» option will automatically switch between the original «Light» and «Dark» themes based upon the OS preference or dark mode state.

Clips

Clips let you quickly insert pre-formatted blocks of HTML into your messages. It works similarly to Responses and Signatures, but Clips have two additional capabilities:

1. Clips can insert CSS into the region of a message
2. A default Clip can be used per identity when new messages are composed

This means that you can now create sophisticated newsletters, brand templates, or stationary and use them as needed or by default per identity.

Theoretically, any email template that you can create or find on the web can now be used in Postbox.

Like Signatures and Responses, we’ve included a suite of example Clips that you can use in your messages, including:

• checked bullets
• numbered bullets
• buttons
• callouts
• description list
• horizontal rules
• image blocks
• quotes
• social follow blocks
• text blocks
• tables

To access Custom Clips, open the Compose window, make sure the Clips button is added to the Toolbar, press and hold the Clips button, then select Custom Clips from the menu.

Labs

Similar to add-ons, our Labs feature will allow for experimental 3rd-party code to be used within Postbox.

The first Labs project will be OpenPGP support provided by a specially designed version of Enigmail for Postbox and can be enabled under the Tools menu (remember to add the appropriate buttons to the Compose window toolbar).

Unlike add-ons which can be arbitrarily installed, only a select number of Labs projects will be available for Postbox. Given that Labs projects contain 3rd-party experimental code, they are not officially supported by Postbox, Inc.

Cloud File Sharing for Business

By popular demand, we’ve added two new services to our Cloud File Sharing feature:

• Dropbox for Business
• OneDrive for Business

New Swipe Gestures on macOS

We’ve created a new swipe mechanism on macOS that will provide better feedback for four commonly used actions:

• 1/2 swipe left = Archive
• full swipe left = Reminder
• 1/2 swipe right = Junk
• full swipe right = Delete

The swipe actions work on a «swipe-n-hold» basis. Swipe until the desired action is displayed, hold, then let go once the swipe action «activates.» This usage pattern was designed to prevent accidental swipes from performing an action.

Most importantly, swipe actions can be performed on multiple messages at once!

Currently, this feature is available on macOS only.

Quick Copy

This works similarly to Quick Move but copies the message to the desired folder instead of moving it. The keyboard shortcut «c» will bring up the Quick Bar, and from there you can type the name of the folder you wish to copy the message to.

Gmail Labeling Mechanism

We’ve created a new mechanism for Gmail labeling that mirrors the actions used for Quick Move, Quick Switch, and Quick Copy. Type the «l» key to bring up the Quick Bar, then autocomplete against the desired label name.

Gmail labeling works similarly to Topic assignment in the Quick Bar, and you can now assign multiple labels at once.

Highlight & Strikethrough in Compose

The compose formatting toolbar now supports text strikethrough and highlighting.

New Filter Actions

We’ve added three more filter actions:

• Add Prefix to Subject
• Add Suffix to Subject
• Add Sender to Address List
