Avid Pro Tools 2021.3 — macOS Big Sur Support And More

Avid has released the latest version of Pro Tools. 2021.3, which comes with a virtual MIDI keyboard, improvements to Dolby Atmos workflow, Dark Theme, HD Driver, Dynamic Transport, MIDI Output Assignments, Bounces to MOV file type as well as support for Apple Lossless (ALAC) and 2 free plugins for Pro Tools subscribers and support for macOS Big Sur.

Pro Tools 2021.3 includes support for the initial release of Pro Tools Sync X precision synchronizer.

Virtual MIDI Keyboard

A new MIDI Keyboard window has been added in Pro Tools 2021.3, which enables you to play MIDI notes from your computer keyboard. It can be found in the Window menu or opened using the shortcut, Shift+K.

Dark Theme Improvements

Based on your feedback, Avid has made numerous improvements to the Dark theme introduced in Pro Tools 2020.11. Changes have been made to the various clip states and edit selection treatment so that they are easier to tell apart. Other changes were made to improve overall visibility and usability across the entire application.

Dolby Atmos Improvements

There has been a number of Dolby Atmos workflow related changes made to Pro Tools 2021.3 including…

Easier Setup of Stereo Objects — It’s now possible to automatically create stereo mapped objects based on the connected renderer input configuration. This can be done by selecting “Use Dolby Atmos Renderer (Stereo)” in the I/O Setup bus tab, and then clicking the default button. There is also an option for mono.

Bed/Object Fold Down — Beds are now included in the fold-down path making it easier to monitor a rough mix when a Dolby Atmos renderer is not available.

Always Fold Down — You can now choose to always enable the channel-based fold-down path for a Dolby Atmos mix. This is useful if you require a rough headphone mix for editorial while the main mix is fed through a renderer. It is also useful if a system does not have a renderer connected, and the mix needs to be monitored for non-mission-critical tasks.

Faster ADM Bounces to Network Storage — A new preference has been added, called “Use Local Cache When Bouncing to Network Volume.” This significantly increases the speed of the bounce process in certain circumstances. It works by automatically bouncing to a local cache location when pointing the Bounce Mix window to a network volume. When the bounce completes, the cached file is immediately copied to the network location, and then the cache is cleared. While this was primarily designed to help bouncing to WAV (ADM BWF), it also works with WAV (BWF) when using the Single File Delivery Format option with multi-stem bounces.

HD Device Improvements

In order to support Big Sur, Pro Tools and the HD Driver have been updated to use modern interrupts (MSI). This change may also prevent or minimize conflicts with other PCIe devices on any supported operating systems. This will require a firmware update for both HDX and HD Native. The good news is that this firmware is backwards compatible with earlier versions of Pro Tools and HD drivers if needed.

Dynamic Transport Improvements

The ‘Dynamic Transport Follows Timeline Selection During Playback’ preference allows users to choose between two different Dynamic Transport behaviours…

Enabled: When a timeline selection is changed, the playhead will immediately jump to a new timeline selection and begin to loop within the new boundaries.

Disabled: When a timeline selection is made outside the current timeline selection, the playhead will continue to play without interruption. Once the end of the selection is reached, the playhead loops within the newly selected range. If a timeline selection is made before the current playhead position, the playhead will not jump to the new selection.

Include Instrument/MIDI Output Assignments

A new option to save and recall MIDI Output assignments, on Instrument or MIDI tracks, has been added to Track Presets and Import Session Data.

Improved Zooming Performance on Network Storage

A new preference, ‘While loading waveforms, display in low resolution’ has been added to the Processing tab under the Misc section.

When selected, Pro Tools will draw low-resolution waveforms temporarily to maintain performance until all the needed data is read from the cache.

This prevents performance issues and improves responsiveness when working with network storage devices or older non-solid-state drives. This preference is not selected by default.

Apple Lossless (ALAC)

Stereo M4A Apple Lossless (ALAC) files may now be imported and converted to the current session audio file format. This makes it easier to import files directly from your iTunes or Apple Music library.

Bounce Mix MOV Improvements

Several stem formats have been added to the Bounce Mix window for the MOV file type. The available stem formats now include all of the following:

Задержка может появляться под воздействием многих факторов, чаще всего это задержка аудио интерфейса при обработке аудио-фрагмента после записи,

или задержка появившаяся после обработки фрагмента тяжелыми эффектами, либо целым стеком эффектов.

Доп. информация: Avid уже начала продажи Pro Tools 9 по цене $599 за коробку, либо $210 за обновление с LE версии, либо $295 за обновление с M-Powered. Pro Tools продается как и в виде Box версии, включающей в себя DVD с программой и всеми печатными материалами, DVD с драйверами, DVD с аудио лупами, различные печатные материалы с информацией о установке и начальных сведениях для работы с программой и ключ iLok для авторизации программы.

Xочется сказать, что Avid действительно делает очень большой шаг (и отчасти рискованный) в сторону обычных юзеров, необычный для этой компании, теперь Pro Tools становится видимым конкурентом Steinberg Cubase/Nuendo, Ableton Live и другим DAW.

2.) Установить Xcode. После в Terminal ввести команду gdb test (ОБЯЗАТЕЛЬНО!)

3.) Установить Pro Tools + дополнения Install Complete Production Toolkit 2.mpkg и Install HEAT.pkg

из этой папки /Volumes/Pro Tools/Additional Files/Toolkit and Options Installers/

4.) Затем всё это дело пропатчить с помощью PTHD.dmg

5.) Для запуска Pro Tools использовать PT9Loader из /Applications/Digidesign/Pro Tools/

Preparing For macOS 10.15 Catalina — We Have The Latest Advice And Avid Tell Us What To Expect For Pro Tools And QuickTime

In this article, we provide advice on what to do to prepare for the release of Catalina “in the fall”. With the announcement of macOS 10.15 Catalina at the WWDC on June 3rd 2019, we now have initial confirmation from Apple about which Mac computers will be supported with macOS Catalina.

The second issue is that macOS 10.15 will be 64-bit only, as promised on the release of macOS Mojave. Consequently, replacements will need to be found for any 32-bit applications, which you are still using that developers choose not to update to 64-bit applications.

Finally we look at what needs to be done to continue working with video files and codecs, as native OS support of a number of 3rd party codecs will end with the release of Catalina and then there is the question of what changes will Avid need to make to Pro Tools to drop any remaining dependence on 32-bit code like QuickTime. Avid Pro Tools And Video Codec Support

There has already been discussions about what will need to happen to the Pro Tools code to be ready for macOS Catalina, with differing opinions of what Avid needs to do. Rather than speculate, to get a clearer view, we asked Francois Quereuil, Director of Product Management | Audio Workstations & Control Surfaces at Avid and he gave us this exclusive statement…

“We’re already working closely with Apple on ensuring timely support for all flavors of Pro Tools. Mojave was mostly about tuning performance and presented unique challenges, we anticipate that Catalina support will be more straightforward, with only a few 32-bit components to port to 64-bit, which is not a difficult process. As far as QuickTime is concerned, we are also working on solutions to ensure workflow continuity for our users.”

To be clear, it is our understanding that until Avid can make everything in Pro Tools 64-bit code, Pro Tools will not be compatible with macOS Catalina, and Pro Tools users will need to wait until Avid produce a Catalina compatible version of Pro Tools before they can upgrade their Apple Mac computers to Catalina. Also be aware, as we mentioned earlier in this article, the list of Apple Mac computers that will be compatible with macOS Catalina will be shorter, so do check that your Apple Mac computer will support Catalina, especially if you have an older Mac computer.

The other issue for anyone working with video, including those in audio post production is that Catalina marks the end of native support at OS level for a huge number of video codecs including most significantly for Pro Tools users, Avid DNxHD. At the time, back in December 2018, Avid released this statement…

“Apple has released an article related to the future of codec support with Apple FCP X and identified that DNxHD and DNxHR will not be supported in future releases of that product. DNxHD and DNxHR within the QuickTime wrapper have been traditionally supported by various products on the MacOS platform either through native integration by various MacOS based applications, or through the plugin mechanism that the QuickTime 7 ™ libraries provided.

With the deprecation of the QuickTime 7 libraries, support for these formats is now based on each media application supporting these codecs natively using 64 bit compliant and performance-tuned libraries available through Avid, or each application vendors own implementation using the SMPTE VC-3 standards specifications that the DNx family of codecs are based on.

As such, for customers using Apple Computers and MacOS, this announcement does not affect Pro Tools and Media Composer, any other products that have chosen to implement DNxHD and DNxHR natively in the aforementioned manner, or, DNxHD/HR supported through MXF wrappers. DNxHD, DNxHR, Pro Tools and Media Composer will continue to be supported and will be compatible with the current and future release of Mac OS. We will continue to improve or introduce new features for DNxHD and DNxHR, proven by the recent release of DNxUncompressed option, and will support these new features on various operating systems, including MacOS.”

With Apple dropping native OS level support for a number of 3rd party codecs with macOS 10.15, we will need to find alternative workflows for converting and viewing videos using, soon to be unsupported video codecs, like Avid’s DNxHD.

With Catalina you won’t even be able to play an Avid DNxHD video outside one the apps like Pro Tools, Media Composer, Adobe Premiere etc, We have discovered a low cost video player app that will be able to play video files using, most if not all, of what will be unsupported video codecs Optimus Player — Is This The Alternative To QuickTime 7 You’ll Need To Be Able To Play Avid DNXHD Video Files In The Future?

Our Advice — Be Prepared — Find Alternatives And Update Now — Don’t Leave It To The Last Minute

If you have old software you like to use and never update, it’s possible they are 32-bit apps and they won’t work in macOS 10.15 Catalina. We recommend that need to find replacements for these apps now and get used to them BEFORE you need to upgrade to macOS Catalina.
