How to Install Audio Effects Tool PulseEffects in Ubuntu 18.04
This quick tutorial shows how to install PulseEffects, audio effects software (e.g., limiter, compressor, equalizer.), in Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 18.10, Ubuntu 19.04, and Ubuntu 19.10.
Ubuntu uses both ALSA and Pulseaudio for controlling sound input and output. ALSA is the kernel level sound mixer that manages your sound card directly. And Pulseaudio is a software mixer provides further tools on top of ALSA base.
PulseEffects is an open-source audio effects software for PulseAudio applications that support:

How to Install PulseEffects in Ubuntu / Linux Mint:
Following steps will show you how to install PulseEffects via Ubuntu PPA, though it’s also available as flatpak (containerized softare package).
1. Open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T keyboard shortcut or by searching for ‘terminal’ from application menu. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:
Type user password (no asterisk feedback) when it prompts and hit Enter to continue.
2. For Linux Mint 19.x and other derivatives, refresh package cache may be required:

Once installation success. Restart Ubuntu, and finally launch it from application menu:
Uninstall:
To remove the software, simply open terminal and run command:
And open Software & Updates and navigate to Other Softwar tab to remove PPAs.

Установка PulseEffects
Процесс установки будет описан для дистрибутива Arch Linux и производных, тем не менее PulseEffects так же можно установить и в другие дистрибутивы Linux. Инструкцию по установке в другие дистрибутивы можно найти на странице PulseEffects на Github.

Обратите внимание, PulseEffects должен положить в автозапуск при загрузке системы свой файл с ключом -gapplication-service. Если этого не произошло, нужно самостоятельно закинуть в автозапуск следующую команду:
Если этого не сделать, эффекты будут отключаться при закрытии окна PulseEffects. Чтобы вручную запустить сервис PulseEffects в фоне, выполните эту команду в консоли.

How to Install Advanced Equalizer ‘PulseEffects’ on Linux
If you’ve been looking for an advanced audio equalizer for Linux, then look no more because you’ve come to the right place. Here I’ll introduce you to PulseEffects, which is an equalizer, limiter, reverb, and compressor for PulseAudio.
So let’s see how to Install pulseeffects on Ubuntu/Fedora/Arch Distros.
PulseAudio is a free and open-source network-capable sound server program distributed via the freedesktop.org project. It runs mainly on Linux and various BSD distributions. When you hear any audio come out of your laptop/Desktop, know PulseAudio is responsible for this process. PulseEffects is an application used to manage and control audio effects of PulseAudio on Linux and other Unix systems.
Since version 2.0.0 of PulseEffects, it’s possible to apply effects to microphone output at the same time it applies them for applications output.
There are various ways of installing PulseEffects on Linux, most common are:
- Using binary distributed by your Linux distribution
- Building it from source code — available on github
- Installing from flathub using flatpak
In this guide, we’ll look at Installing from binary and using flatpak. Building from source is not recommended because you’ll have to manually solve dependencies issue, which varies from one Linux distribution to another.
Installing PulseEffects on Ubuntu
We’ll look at the installation of PulseEffects using binary packages and flatpak.
Installing PulseEffects on Ubuntu using binary package
Ubuntu binary packages for PulseEffects are provided on launchpad. This binary installation has been tested on Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 17.04 Desktop versions
Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit)
Now install the binary package by running:

Installing PulseEffects on Ubuntu using flatpak
Let’s first install flatpak. For Ubuntu 16.04, 16.10, 17.04 and 17.10, a PPA is available which contains flatpak package. To install, run:

Installing PulseEffects on Fedora
We’ll use flatpak on Fedora to install pulseeffects. A flatpak package is available for Fedora 23 and newer and is installed by default on Fedora Workstation. If you do not use Fedora Workstation, you can install Flatpak by running:

Pacaur is an AUR helper that aims at minimizing user interaction while managing packages on Arch. pacaur is not available by default on Arch, first install if you don’t have it already:

PulseEffects is a Powerful GTK Audio Effects & Equalizer App for Linux
If you’re on the hunt for an advanced audio equaliser for Ubuntu, you’re definitely going to want to check this app out.
It’s called PulseEffects and it’s an equalizer, limiter, reverb, and compressor that works with Pulseaudio, the default sound server in Ubuntu.
The app lets you adjust and modify the sound output from any app on a global or per-app basis using (among others) some Gstreamer effects. This means it can work with everything from the sound of YouTube and Netflix in your browser, to Skype chats, MPV movies, and SuperTuxKart soundtracks.
So, for example, if you’ve longed to have a Spotify equaliser or apply compression and reverb to Skype calls (drab work colleagues sound 100% when you make them sound like they’re lecturing form a cathedral) PulseEffects can help.
So long as the sound comes through Pulseaudio, PulseEffects lets you fine-tune it.

Now, IAMAST (i am not a sound technician) so I won’t pretend I know precisely how to tune this app to make audio sound better, but with so many options, presets, limiters, gains, reverbs and other sliders and switches, I’m sure that it’s more than capable of doing so.
A free, open-source app like this seems like a no-brainer add-in for audiophiles amongst you. But with audio quality a largely subjective topic I make no promises that you’ll like what you hear!
Fun fact, I remember playing around with the equaliser on the front of the family HiFi when I was younger. I never really paid attention to what each slider and toggle did, but I hate how, after adjusting things, nothing would sound “right” again, even when reset to normal — so if nothing sounds right after playing with this app, don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Although the latest version of PulseEffects is not (that I can find) packaged for Ubuntu in the repos you can download the source code from Github and compile it manually.
An older version of the app is available for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS via an engorged third-party GNOME 3 PPA. As this personal package archive is chock-full of other apps, themes and libraries I recommend only downloading the PulseEffects package itself directly, rather than adding the PPA to your software sources:

PulseEffects: A Nice System-Wide PulseAudio Equalizer / Audio Effects App
A system-wide equalizer can be useful in situations where an application doesn’t have its own equalizer, like Spotify on desktops, for websites like YouTube or Soundcloud, games, and so on.
With PulseEffects, a Gtk+ application, you get not only an advanced, 30-band system-wide equalizer for Linux, but effects as well, like auto volume, compressor, reverberation, stereo enhancer, limiter and many others.
PulseEffects requires PulseAudio (default in Ubuntu and many other Linux distributions) and it allows applying system-wide effects to all running applications or individually, to selected apps. The enhancements can be applied to both applications output as well as microphone output.

While PulseEffects allows enhancing your sound in multiple ways, it lacks in one department: presets. There are no presets available by default so you’ll either have to create your own presets, or import some community-made ones. Update: PulseEffects now ships with (Gstreamer) presets by default, so you don’t have to install your own presets.

Get PulseEffects to work properly in Ubuntu or KDE
Update: if you use PulseEffects installed from the PPA, these configuration changes should not be applied (the PPA has PulseAudio 12, which can make the config change undesirable).
The fixes below were applied in the PulseAudio git, so this step won’t be required with future PulseAudio versions. But until then, you must perform the tweaks below to get PulseEffects to work properly in Ubuntu or KDE.
Without these fixes, you may get no sound because the incorrect output device will be selected when enabling PulseEffects.
For Ubuntu 17.10 and newer:
You’ll need to unload the module-switch-on-connect PulseAudio module. Do this for this session only (doesn’t persist through reboots) by using this command:
To make this change permanent for your user (so you don’t have to run the command above each time you login), use this:
You need to unload the module-device-manager PulseAudio module. To unload it for this session only (doesn’t persist through reboots), use:
To make this change permanent (for your user only) in KDE, use:
If you don’t wish to make this change permanent, you’ll need to run the pactl command mentioned above before running PulseEffects (each time).
Update: if you’re getting an error similar to the following when trying to run PulseEffects (either installed from PPA or Flatpak — it was happening using both for me):
You can fix it by resetting the PulseEffects Dconf settings, like this:
Download PulseEffects
To install PulseEffects as a Flatpak package, follow the Flatpak and FlatHub quick setup guide. Then search for PulseEffects in Ubuntu/Gnome Software and install it from there, or you can install it using this command:

Update: PulseEffects now also has an Ubuntu PPA (for Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10). The PPA has a newer PulseAudio version (because PulseEffects recommends PulseAudio >= 12) so keep this in mind before adding the PPA. Upgrading system packages may cause issues! If you can, I’d recommend using the Flatpak version of PulseEffects instead.
You can add the PPA in Ubuntu 18.10 and Ubuntu 18.04, as well as Ubuntu 18.04-based Linux distributions such as Linux Mint 19, elementary OS 5.0 Juno, and so on, and install PulseEffects, by using these commands:
