Racing — one of the genres of computer games, can be from the first and third parties. This genre involves competition between players on any type of transport: land, water, underwater, air, space, and even animals. Racing games unblocked can be based on real-life competitions or be completely fictional.
The first racing game called Space Race was released in 1973 on an arcade machine. In it, players competed on spaceships, simultaneously dodging meteorites and other space debris. Since then, racing games have been released every year, improving every time. Added music, voice acting vehicles, improved graphics and physics of the behavior of vehicles.
Nowadays, races are very popular. There are games that are as close to reality as possible, where the graphics convey weather conditions, the emotions of the audience and even the texture of the asphalt. Physics in such games shows realistic movements of cars, their damage, behavior on wet and slippery roads, and more.
The most popular races are the series:
- Need for Speed; .
- FlatOut; .

Arcade Racing Game
In arcade racing games for mac, you should not look for realism, because they are created to get quick pleasure from the racing process itself. In such games, you do not need to slow down before cornering, you don’t have to worry that a collision will lead to a car malfunction, etc.
Simulators should be as realistic as possible and accurately convey control of the car. In such races, you can meet licensed real-life cars that not only look like real ones, but the accuracy of a certain model is preserved in the control. Using a racing simulator, players can take part in existing championships and even control their favorite racer.
In such games, as a rule, the control and behavior of the car is transmitted in a simplified form. Instead of realism, players are offered atypical tracks on which various obstacles and action elements are encountered. In kart free racing games for mac, you can often find popular characters from cartoons or platformers, their cars are equipped with various weapons, and players can eliminate opponents in different ways. Our Criteria
Games have a largely subjective aspect to them. You may love some games while I might prefer completely different ones. This is why we identified a set of criteria that every single one of our picks has to meet:
Native support: This should go without saying, but each and every one of the games mentioned here has to be officially supported on MacOS and does not require Bootcamp or Wine. We’ve seen too many Top Games for MacOS lists that feature Windows-only games…
MacOS performance: There’s a plethora of reliable Windows-PC reviews, guides, and videos on the internet. However, they never acknowledge MacOS gaming. This is why our focus is always on the Mac performance of the games listed here. We test every one of our picks on the following machines:
iMac (5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2013)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016):
All games are tested on Medium settings because we know Mac users hang onto their computers for a long time and aren’t always upgrading to the latest and greatest hardware. These are all the results from our tests in Frames per Second (FPS):
Game | 2014 27-inch iMac | 2016 13-inch MBP | 2013 13-inch MBP |
DiRT Rally | 115.4 FPS | 53.9 FPS | 29.3 FPS |
GRID 2 | 79.84 FPS | 30.88 FPS | 27.46 FPS |
F1 2017 | 59 FPS | 25 FPS | 0 FPS |
Sonic All-Star Racing | 60 FPS | 51.6 FPS | 39.3 FPS |
Distance | 148.9 FPS | 54.2 FPS | 27.9 FPS |
AudioSurf 2 | 214.3 FPS | 114.6 FPS | 52.6 FPS |
Asphalt 6 | 60 FPS | 60 FPS | 60 FPS |
Road Redemption | 103 FPS | 52.3 FPS | 27.1 FPS |
Race The Sun | 60 FPS | 60 FPS | 60 FPS |
FlatOut 2 | 60 FPS | 60 FPS | 53.5 FPS |
And for reference, this is how we interpret the results:
Below 20 FPS | Unplayable | Laggy gameplay, full of stutters and slowdowns. |
20-30 FPS | Borderline | Can be Ok in slow paced games. Still, not optimal. |
30-45 FPS | Playable | Acceptable for most (most gaming consoles do this). |
45-60 FPS | Smooth | Fluid gameplay, with no perceivable stutters. |
60+ FPS | Very Smooth | For hardcore and professional players, a luxury for most. |
We usually aim for 30 FPS, because 30 FPS is enough to guarantee a smooth and fluid experience.
A word about controllers: Some genres are meant to be played with a mouse and controller (like any good first-person shooter), but racing games are not. For these tests, we used either a PS4 controller or a wired Xbox 360 controller. If you’re more serious than that, you can check Feral Interactive’s support page for detailed lists of supported steering wheels (for their games).
Critical acclaim: Video games can be subjective, but to keep this guide as relevant as possible, we only consider proven games with positive reviews from both professional reviewers and average gamers.
Pricing: We all want quality, but pricing also plays an important role. We always keep in mind price tags and production value to give indies and AAA games equal chances. After all, we’re after games that are fun to play. Looks are important but fun gameplay is even more so.
Wrapping Up
If you’re into racing games, you’re in luck. There is no other genre with as many great games that support macOS. Whether you’re a hardcore fan with a pedal and steering wheel setup or a casual gamer who likes the occasional arcade racer, this list provides quality games to meet your needs.
So next time someone tells you there are no good racing games, just point them to this list and get back to the starting line. Which one is your favorite? Did we miss any you think belong on this list? Let us know in the comments section.
