So I don’t know if anyone else is as crazy as I am, trying to run Linux Mint 7 Gloria on a brand-new ATI Radeon HD 5770 card, but in case they are, I thought I should explain how to get it working since it was so much trouble.

Basically, the story is this: the current (as of this post) ATI fglrx closed-source drivers — Catalyst 9.10 — do not support the 5770. But there is a newer (beta) version of the drivers available for free to developers in the form of the ATI Stream SDK. Just go to this page and download the file ati-opencl-beta-driver-v2.0-beta4-lnx.zip (82.3MB). It’ll ask you for a free registration; as far as I can tell, this is harmless.

The install procedure once you have that is relatively painless — just follow the on-screen instructions for installing and reboot when you’re done. Though I can’t make promises that this won’t screw up your X config and leave you trying to revert it in the terminal. so be careful, I guess.

There’s one caveat, which is that the beta drivers drop an ugly «AMD Testing Use Only» watermark on the bottom-right corner of your display. Luckily, the folks over at the Phoronix Forums have figured out a workaround.

Apparently in the time since I did this, the complete 9.11 version of Catalyst has been leaked, so that may be an even easier, better solution, but I haven’t tried it so I can’t say for sure whether it works.

I’ve tried both the ATI and RadeonHD drivers. My card is a Radeon HD 5770; I’ve looked everywhere, and I can’t seem to find a solution to make the driver work.

The problem is, simply, that whenever I try and use the driver, it becomes extremely slow and distorts into a blob-like mess of 70’s colors (how’s that for a description) whenever I use it. Also, under gnome-display-properties, it shows all of the display resolutions as 0 Hz.

However, it’s normally fast and good as it normally should, except when I open any program that modifies the X display (games, Wine, etc).

For those of us who have this card but would like to use the open source drivers can anyone offer some pointers into making that work.

I’ve experienced the issue of not getting tty’s displayed after closing X described here:

I can type in commands, switch virtual terminals, and do anything one normally could. I just cannot see what I am doing. Ideally I’d also like to get kernel modesetting to work. Currently I cannot use KMS (early or late start)
Any help or guidance is appreciated. Thanks.

The free driver does not support the card in any usable form yet. With 2.6.34 it can, if you are lucky, actually manage to display something in X, but you won’t have any acceleration at all. (and it will only work with the drivers and tools from the git tree)

the 5xxx serire probably won’t be usable with the free driver for alteast another 6 months.

Thanks, that’s good to know. Is it worth setting up the headache of proprietary drivers to have «nice things» like Xinerama and hardware acceleration or should I just wait?

There is no real «headache», just use the catalyst-xorg18 repo. Easy as pacman -Syu && pacman -S catalyst

I have a 5770 and after trying different drivers I fund that only vesa and fglrx seemed to work. I did this:

i.e., added this repo to my /etc/pacman.conf above [core]. Then you just need to run:

If you have already installed xorg fully, you may also need to remove xorg-server and reinstall it from the [catalyst] repository (which should work with ‘pacman -S xorg-server’ if the [catalyst] repo has been placed correctly above [core] and [testing] if you are using [testing])

You will then need to run

if you need to make a xorg.conf file, if you already have one maybe remove it and run this anyway

because I have a single head setup although I don’t think I needed to

You then need to edit /etc/rc.conf and add ‘fglrx’ minus the quotes to the MODULES=() array.

Once you’ve installed a desktop environment, you may find that the image doesn’t fit your screen, to fix this first install qt with ‘pacman -S qt’ and the run ‘amdcccle’ as root (or ‘gksudo amdcccle’, but ‘sudo amdcccle’ should be fine).

Then click the [+] next to Display Manager then click DTV (1) if the option is there and go to the ‘Adjustments’ tab and drag the scaling options to 0% (Overscan).

That’s what I did, of course, depending on your setup you may need to follow the Archwiki article differently.

AMD HD5770 не работает OpenGL [Решено]

Пробовал переустанавливать драйвера, как написано в вики. Не работают эффекты, требующие OpenGL, игры тоже. Раньше работали.

ATI Radeon HD 5770: технические характеристики и тесты

ATI начала продажи Radeon HD 5770 13 октября 2009 по рекомендованной цене 159$. Это десктопная видеокарта на архитектуре Terascale 2 и техпроцессе 40 нм, в первую очередь рассчитанная на геймеров.
