Install hangs with radeon R5 230 as primary output video card

Hello all,
in bios I have selected the pcie slot in which the radeon R5 230 is plugged in. As seen in this screenshot, the install hangs at this point: https://imgur.com/YONf33t

the card is a caicos and therefore should have radeon support: https://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/

If I switch the pcie slot in bios to the nvidia card I have, the usb install environment works with no problems.
I’m using legacy mode (no uefi) since my board’s uefi bios support lacks for video cards with larger memory sizes (which my nvidia card has).

Card appears to work properly within windows when I boot into windows with it

The linux install I used is: archlinux-2019.02.01-x86_64.iso

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sometimes triggering uevents can take a considerable (like minutes) amount of time, how long did you wait ?

If I switch the pcie slot in bios to the nvidia card I have,

What brand and model is your motherboard and which bios setting are you changing ?
What processor and does it have an integrated gpu ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
Did you use the guided installer ? If yes, I can’t help you.

I have bios F12, F13w didn’t work with my nvidia card in either uefi or legacy mode. The BIOS setting I am changing allows you to set a pcie slot used for the graphics being used. You can see the setting called «Init display first» in a screenshot on page 51 of chapter 2-5 entitled «BIOS Features» in the manual:

The paragraph about the setting reads as follows from the manual above:
Init Display First
Specifies the first initiation of the monitor display from the installed PCI graphics card or the PCI Express
graphics card.
PCIe Slot1
Sets the graphics card on the PCIEX16_1 slot as the first display. (Default)
PCIe Slot2
Sets the graphics card on the PCIEX8 slot as the first display.
PCIe Slot3
Sets the graphics card on the PCIEX16_2 slot as the first display.
PCI
Sets the graphics card on the PCI slot as the first display.

As you can see, onboard graphics is not possible/offered by this chip.

What are your thoughts on the theory that on that pcie slot 1 (which is currently used by the nvidia card) there is some setting not fully being changed over from pci slot 1 to pcie slot 3 when using that «Init display first» setting?

Thanks for your suggestion, I will wait longer with the arch install again and report back again. but not holding my breath though :-/

Have you tried simply taking out the Nvidia card? Not to sound condescending, but it’s quite an obvious troubleshooting step to take — it wouldn’t surprise me if Linux tries to activate both cards and barfs on it.

An option that doesn’t involve taking out the card is to blacklist the nouveau module.

The option that you suggested without taking out the video card worked very well.
I was able to hit the tab key while booting off the arch install on my usb key and enter «module_blacklist=nouveau» as a kernel parameter.

Не инициализируется видеокарта Radeon HD 8550M / R5 M230

Всем доброго времени суток. Купил ноутбук Lenovo G50-70 c дискретной видеокартой от АМД и втроеной от Интел. На винде все хорошо работает так что проблема не аппаратная. Ноут использует только встроенную графику а сама дискретка даже не инициализируется как окозалось. вот что было в самом начале при стсарте системы 1 фото http://s018.radikal.ru/i502/1709/fa/d0396ce013da.jpg

Пришли к выводу с одним человеком что видеокарта не инициализируется при старте системы. Отключал acpi через grub и добавлял в строке linux acpi=off и выдало фото 2 и система не грузились также dri_prime=1 glxinfo выдает такое

также мне сказали про firmware-linux-nonfree firmware-amd-graphics, но они в арче как-то по другому называются Помогите заставить видьюху работать а то для универа мощьности одной интел не хватае. (Сразу приношу извинения за ошибки в тексте я не русский)

This is the device info of my Graphics card for which i am trying to install driver from the amd website and i get the following error:
error: Detected X Server version ‘XServer 1.19.6_64a’ is not supported. Supported versions are X.Org 6.9 or later, up to XServer 1.10 (default:v2:x86_64:lib32:XServer 1.19.6_64a:none:4.15.0-20-generic:)
Installation will not proceed.

The Main Problem started while i was trying to launch the Unreal Editor which gave me the error:

I’m afraid that if you look here .

. the minimum requirement for AMD is a card that supports the AMDGPU-Pro driver. And the AMD Caicos series cards won’t do it. Sorry, that driver only works on much newer cards.

DO NOT INSTALL the driver from the amd site. i contacted their support team and they responded with a reply saying that support for linux is VERY limited. you have a much better chance at using the open source driver with an updated linux kernel.

i tested ALL the drivers i could find (and mind you they hide the linux drivers and make it hard to find) and came to conclusion that there are two options for AMD gpu users. the latest driver they have is amdgpu-pro-19.10-785425-ubuntu-18.04.tar.xz what are you trying to install?

Видеокарта Radeon R5 230 жертва маркетинга?

Доброго времени суток. Сегодня хочу познакомить вас с очередной мультимедийной видеокартой — Radeon R5 230 . Привлекла она меня не своими характеристиками (в них нет ничего особенного) и не ценой (хотя является одной из самых дешевых карт на рынке), а маркетинговым подходом со стороны AMD.

Знаете ли вы, что у неё есть старшие братья-близнецы?

Да, мои пытливые умы и специалисты ПК, вы уже знаете ответ на заданный вопрос, но давайте не будет сразу срывать покровы, а пойдем более долгим путем.

Radeon R5 230 выпускается с 2014 года компаниями ASUS, AREZ, GIGABYTE, HIS, MSI, PowerColor и Sapphire. В основе заложен устаревший графический процессор Caicos PRO , архитектуры TeraScale 2 , работающий на частоте 625 или 650 МГц . Вариантов объема памяти всего два — это один гигабайт и два гигабайта (DDR3 или GDDR3).

Пользователи, установившие старые версии драйверов, заметили странное поведение в списке устройств — там отображался видеоадаптер «Radeon HD8500», «Radeon HD7450» или «Radeon HD6450». Почему так произошло? Для чистоты «разоблачения», ниже приведу изображение со сравнительными характеристиками последнего и нашей R5.

Правда же, что все показатели аналогичны друг другу, как будто их делали под копирку? Но и это ещё не всё . Если верить ресурсу » techpowerup.com «, то HD 8450 и HD 7450 это ребрендинг Radeon HD 6450 выпущенной в 2011 году (о ней я рассказал в прошлой статье » На что способен ультрабюджетный Radeon HD 6450? «). Получается Radeon R5 230 является, как минимум, третьей попыткой продать что-то покрытое «мхом и пылью» ? Похоже на то. Вот такой маркетинг у AMD: взять старую разработку, назвать по новому и в продажу под видом новинки . Всё это, конечно же, моё мнение, но установите вы (примеч. — AMD) вместо DDR3/GDDR3 новый GDDR5 (тем более он стоял на версии с 512 Мб) объемом 1 или 2 Гб под «оболочкой» двести тридцатой, то не было бы так досадно от этой подмены.

Справедливости ради , отмечу: цена «маркетинговой уловки» находится в тех же пределах, что и Radeon HD6450.

AMD начала продажи Radeon R5 230 3 апреля 2014. Это десктопная видеокарта на архитектуре TeraScale 2 и техпроцессе 40 нм, в первую очередь рассчитанная на офисное использование.
