Ralink RT3090 driver

I have Mint 15 installed in a laptop with a Ralink RT3090 wireless card. The card «works» but the connection is intermittent, and network manager shows a weak signal even when it’s very close to the router. In other rooms is impossible to connect, but other notebooks, and even this one under windows are able to connect. I’ve searched the web and this forum, and it seems to be a driver problem. I’ve already tried this driver https://launchpad.net/

markus-tisoft/+archive/rt3090 and the cars wasn’t eve shown with ifconfig. But is possible I’ve done something wrong in the procces

I would be glad if somebody could help me.

I had the same problem with LM15, I think that it is a network manager bug in LM15.

Try LIve CD of LM14.

Support for LM15 is over.

I’m trying any solution, but since I’m a newbie it’s really possible I’ve done something wrong.

I’ve tried to install the windows driver via ndiswrapper and it didn’t worked.
I’ve tried to install the linux driver, but I’m not experienced with makefiles, and it results in an error I don’t know how to diagnose it.

Hello there, I’ve found the drives for my Ralink rt3090 wireless card but I don’t know how to install them. Completely n00b to things like this.

You can download this pre-built rt3090-dkms package here:

It also works for the RaLink RT3090, you just need to replace the » RT2860″ with «RT3090».

Disadvantage of this procedure:

• You need to recompile the driver each time you make a major kernel-update. The backports I have tried so far did not work very well

Advantage of this procedure:

• On my EeeBox B202 and my friends EeePC 1015 P it works very well and reliable

The manual should also work for newer releases of Ubuntu, I am still running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my systems.

Hi — been there done that — compiled, installed deb, tried ‘Windows Wireless Drivers’ — any suggestions?

New laptop — MSI CR620, just purchased from Novatech. Netgear dongle works aok.

IIRC, there’s been a driver built in for that card for over a year, but it’s only worked out of the box since 11.04. In 10.10 and below, you have to blacklist the rt2800usb driver (I believe) in the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file and reboot.

Installing ndiswrapper might stop the native driver from working, which is a shame because people seem eager to recommend ndiswrapper at the drop of a hat, when it often doesn’t work.

Hi — thanks for info — still doesnt work and have just upgraded to 11.04.

Did as you have stated in 10.10 but to no affect. Is there any way I can check somehow to see if the hardware is ok, or do I need to install windows to do a check. hope not.

Update : installed windows XP and all was well, reinstall Ubuntu and then the .deb via synaptic and it now works without any issues. No idea what happened.

I downloaded the zip and followed the instructions.
but the make failed the file sta_ioctl_patch.c is not in directory os/linux

Slow WiFi for HP4720s, Ralink RT3090 [SOLVED]

Hi There

tl;dr — WiFi works but very slow, whereas Ethernet works fine. Multiple troubleshooters did not help, and I’m not sure about the driver I need

Long time reader, first time writer, and generally new to Linux Mint. I have a relatively fresh install of Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon Refaela, and the WiFi used to work fine, but now it doesn’t.
Options considered and eliminated:
— not router as other devices work fine
— not Internet connection as a cable connection is very fast (240mb/s vs. 0.3 mb/s with WiFi).
— system is fully updated

I have read several guides on the subject (eg. https://goo.gl/jiQNhc) but at the moment I’m a bit confused in regards to my physical WiFi card: on the one hand HP says that my model, 4720s, has Atheros 9285 (http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/publ . -c02057767) but on the other hand some reviews (eg. http://www.notebookreview.com/notebookr . 0s-review/) says I have the RALINK 3090. Running some commands on terminal say the same, but I consider the possibility that I just got the wrong drivers (not sure how). My BIOS isn»t being too helpful.
So my first question would be: how do I know what card I actually have?

As far as I can tell the settings are «correct» in the sense of disabling encryption key, power management etc.
At this stage I would mostly want to just re-install the driver, but I’m not sure how to do that: where and how do I get the driver for my network card?

Note that most guides and tips refer to non-functional WiFi, but here’s the case is a bit different, just slow.

100-200kbps). It might work for a while but then it will disconnect and keep trying to reconnect and occasionally at random times it will reconnect or I might get so frustrated I just turn off wireless and plug in a cable.
I’m guessing this is a driver issue since my Win 7 laptop can be sitting right next to the AR3700 and it gets 15-20Mbps on my wifi. So does my Android phone. I have spent hours reading forums and found other people having RT3090 problems but the solutions are for older or different versions of Linux.

I downloaded the driver on the Ralink website. Not that I could ever figure out how to install the driver, but the readme file said it was for Linux kernel 2.4 & 2.6 (14 is kernel 3.0 correct?)

Can anybody give me any advice on what things I can try to fix this? This is going to be a deal killer for Mint if I can’t get the wifi working.

Note: I see something on here called NDIS wrapper driver installation tool, should I try that? Is that something that a non-expert should be able to figure out?

I tried NDISWrapper and it didn’t work. First I found the .inf and .sys driver files for my wireless card. Then I ran NDISWrapper and when I selected the .inf file I got the error:
«Module could not be loaded. Error was: FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found. Is the ndiswrapper module installed?»

I’m not sure what this error means.

Did you install ndiswrapper? Generally, when that message comes up for me, either I forgot to install something or the kernel wasn’t built with support for that module. I think it’s in synaptic.

Try installing the ndiswrapper-dkms package.

Look in synaptic for the kernel module. A.K.A. ndiswrapper-dkms as I said in my previous post. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_Ke . le_Support.

I have an HP with Mint 20.1 and all works perfectly, but i cant start the internal wifi (Ralink rt3090 model). without that, i cant use Linux Mint in the computer and I would have tu return to W10. Can you help me with this?

Look for why your wireless is «Hard blocked», like airplane mode. There may be a Fn key, switch, button, or a BIOS setting that disables wireless.

Some HP owners found answers for a similar problem in this old Mint thread.

For example, reset your BIOS: «It seems all I needed to do is reset BIOS to default settings. I just booted into BIOS and pressed F9 (Reset setup defaults). After that I pressed F10 to Save and exit, and my WLAN now works like a charm.»

Someone else did this: Open a Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T), then copy-and-paste this command-line.

Other HP owners found answers in this HP Support thread.

Example: «My laptop . it has a lit-up touch volume control on top of the keyboard. the wireless button is to the right of the volume control, and is also lit up. This morning, it was red. I touched it, and it turned blue.. and now my wireless is back up.»

Also: «I found the wireless button, but when I pressed it the wireless status went from «disabled» to «off» with no ON! Turns out I had to restore the default [BIOS] setting on the computer to get it to turn back on—just press f10 as the notebook is booting up (so before the desktop is loaded after you restart) and then press f9 and then YES to restore default [BIOS] settings.»

Another also reset their BIOS: «—read the suggestion above and Hallelujah—same info—restart and use F10, F9, F10. Now—it took 3 steps — I didnt realize that F10 took you to a bios screen—u don’t have to wait but can push F10 again to close it . after pushing f9.»

After you fix that «Hard blocked» issue, we can also check your RT3090 wifi driver (rt2800pci), but it looks okay.
