Enable snaps on Linux Mint and install Raspberry Pi Imager

Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Linux distributions from a single build. They update automatically and roll back gracefully.

Snaps are discoverable and installable from the Snap Store, an app store with an audience of millions.

Enable snapd

Snap is available for Linux Mint 18.2 (Sonya), Linux Mint 18.3 (Sylvia), Linux Mint 19 (Tara), Linux Mint 19.1 (Tessa) and the latest release, Linux Mint 20 (Ulyana). You can find out which version of Linux Mint you’re running by opening System info from the Preferences menu.

On Linux Mint 20, /etc/apt/preferences.d/nosnap.pref needs to be removed before Snap can be installed. This can be accomplished from the command line:

To install snap from the Software Manager application, search for snapd and click Install. Alternatively, snapd can be installed from the command line:

Either restart your machine, or log out and in again, to complete the installation.

Hello i am getting a raspberry pi 4 for my main desktop and would like to install Linux Mint MATE 18.3 on it i have a windows 7 laptop already.
how would i go about to install this on my raspberry pi’s Micro SD card

any help is appreciated.

Install Ubuntu, then install cinnamon or mate or whatever you prefer. I recently did this on L4T on the Nintendo Switch.
there is no out of the box version of Mint for Raspberry Pi or any other ARM based device so you have to build one yourself based on Ubuntu..

Raspbian is minimalistic, but probably runs the best performancewise.

Raspberry pi and linux mint

can you provide the Cinnamon Desktop for Raspberry? either on Rasbian or LinuxMint Port?
It is the best XP desktop clone.
That makes the Pi useable as Kiosk Desktop.

Cinnamon is available for ArchLinuxArm so maybe you could try it ?

Cinnamon is not available in official Debian Wheezy or Jessie packages.

Linux Mint is Ubuntu based and Ubuntu do not support. aRMv6 architecture of the Pi.

There is now (has been for a while) a version of Linux Mint Debian Xfce for Raspberry Pi, called SolydX RPI

After Linux Mint droped Xfce support from its official Debian rolling distributions (and Linux Mint KDE), unofficial community editions were put together (Xfce & KDE) originally based on Linux Mint Debian rolling. When it became evident that it was not going to be officially adopted, it evovled into SolydX (Xfce) & SolydK (KDE)

NOTE: Solyd linux (SolydX & SolydK) is based on Debian rolling release, not Linux Mint Mate or Linux Mint Xfce.

A bit of history

You find SolydXK’s roots in another great distribution: Linux Mint.

There were two distributions which I liked very much: Linux Mint KDE and Linux Mint Debian Edition. There were once rumors that the two would merge, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. So, I decided to make my own distribution. First as a tutorial in the forum, but later it became known as “The unofficial LMDE KDE”. When Linux Mint dropped their LMDE Xfce edition, I started that one from scratch and “The unofficial LMDE Xfce” was born.

Both these editions were mainly created with the help of the community. Without them they simply wouldn’t exist. Especially with the Xfce edition where the community decided which software was to be included and which software not. So, these distributions are really community driven.

When it became clear that the unofficial editions were not going to become official I decided to take the next step and let these great distributions stand on their own two feet and the unofficials got their proper names: SolydX and SolydK.

Raspberry pi and linux mint

So I am considering asking for a raspberry pi for my birthday but I’m not a big fan of the raspian operating system so I would be using Linux mint.

Can I boot Linux mint from the start or do I have to use the raspian SD card first?

Linux Mint does not support ARM CPU Architecture so there is no way buying a Raspberry Pi would satisfy your needs.

Raspbian is Debian with a tweaked LXDE as a window manager. I believe Mint uses Cinnamon. You can get the «non windowed» variant of Raspbian (Raspbian Lite) which has no windowing system or window manager installed and just add Cinnamon on top of Raspbian if you desperately want it.

I would strongly suggest using Raspbian Lite as you base as it has the best set of tweaks and tuning for the actual hardware. Run whatever window manager floats your boat. I run Mate, as it is what I have on all my other Linux boxes. There are all sorts of other variants of Linux that are available for the Pi. However, they don’t run as well and none have as big a user community. Plus understandably RPT is not interested in supporting them.

I was wondering if there would be an image on the upcoming version of Linux Mint 20 on Raspberry Pi 4. I would like to do some testing prior official release as I’m already running Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS on my raspberry pi 4 4gb and it runs amazingly fast and cooler — doing 36 degrees Celsius with a 5v mini fan attached.
So I assume running Linux Mint would much better, stabled.

I wouldn’t be surprise if Linux Mint Team decides on taking a shot to IOT on upcoming versions. It’s much lighter and faster then Ubuntu/Debian and it would make totally sense to have beginners, kids on trying with Linux to play around with..other then windows PC.

It just matter of time it will be heading that way though. For the meantime You can install Ubuntu with cinnamon remix https://ubuntucinnamon.org/
I just haven’t tried it on my Raspberry Pi as yet. Let you guys know.

LMDE4 = Debian
Raspbian = Debian but tailored specifically for the raspberry pi and has a modified kernel if i remember correct. Raspbian is still 32 bit but work on 64 bit is ongoing.

So LMDE won’t even run on a pi.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS has a server version that is a special build to run on ARM architecture also with a modified kernel to run on the pi. Plain Mint 20 won’t run on the pi, the team would have to develop another spin which they probably won’t do due lack of dev’s, time and because the focus is on the main edition and the flagship desktop Cinnamon.

The new Pi models are 64 bit but the older ones are 32 bit. Raspbian stays 32 bit for a while to provide compatibility. An LM for a Pi would have to provide compatibility with those older devices.

Within the ARM architecture, there are about 20 variations. There are two or three used across the Pi generations. Which of the 20 would you support? For most applications, there is not much difference but down at the OS level, there are differences.

Based on using several models of Pi, Only the Pi4 has the power to usefully run something other than the customised Raspbian GUI. Plus, if you are only running a server type application, the OS GUI is not important. If you are recompiling something for ARM, an application like Nemo might be more useful.
