Red alert linux

Ubuntu Documentation

You can run the game Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 on Ubuntu by using Wine. Unfortunately, the game’s installer does not run in Wine, although there are several procedures that you can follow to get the game itself working. The procedure detailed in this article requires the use of a working Windows installation, although it does not have to be on the same computer as your Ubuntu installation.

Also, the game has a copy-protection system which causes problems when trying to run the software through Wine. Unfortunately, we must resort to using a crack to make the game playable. See the Legal Issues section for more information.

Procedure

This procedure has been tested on an i386 computer running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron), with wine 0.9.59-0ubuntu4. The Windows computer was running Windows XP SP2.

Install Red Alert 2 normally, on a Windows computer, using your game CD. Make sure that you install the Westwood Shared Internet Components, as these provide the auto-updater.

Update the game to version 1.006. If the auto-updater fails, you can download a standalone patch, which you should scan with your Windows anti-virus software before running.

Download the groza no-CD crack and scan it with your anti-virus software. You may need to use WinRAR to extract the files from the downloaded archive.

Follow the instructions in the .nfo file which should have been extracted from the file you downloaded. It is important to copy the .mix files listed from both the Allied and Soviet discs to the game directory (normally C:\Westwood\RA2). Three of the .mix files are the same, so it does not matter which disc you take them from.
Still on Windows, try to play the game without a CD in the drive. If it does not work, you cannot continue.

Copy the game directory (normally C:\Westwood\RA2) to a removable drive or similar, so that it can be copied onto your Ubuntu installation. With all of the .mix files, the game directory should be around 1GB in size.
Copy the game directory to your Ubuntu computer.

Install the wine package.

Open a Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and type the following to run the game:

(Make sure that you replace /path/to/ with the path to the directory that you saved the Westwood folder in.

See the WineHQ entry for Red Alert 2 for troubleshooting advice and performance tweaks.

This section does not constitute legal advice, and is only intended to inform you of potential legal issues.

It is unfortunate that a no-CD crack must be used to get the game working, but it seems that few people have been successful in running the game through alternative methods. If you do choose to follow these instructions, please do not abuse the use of the no-CD crack. That is;

  • Only copy the cracked game directory to one computer. Do not ‘lend’ it or sell it to anyone else.
  • Make sure that you own at least one genuine Red Alert 2 CD while you are using the cracked game directory, ‘as if’ you were playing the game from CD as intended.

Even by taking these steps you are on legally dubious ground, since circumventing copy protection in this way is illegal in some countries. If you are in any doubt of the law in your country, do not use these instructions.

Problems

After completing a «skirmish» game, you may find that the button on the game summary screen doesn’t work. In order to work around this, run Red Alert in a Terminal and, when you reach that screen, click the button and then press Alt + Tab a few times to update the screen.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert is a real-time strategy game and second release in the Command & Conquer series, having been released in October of 1996. it is also the first game in the Red Alert sub-series that takes an alternative path/story of the main Command & Conquer series.

C&C: Red Alert is set prior to the events in Command & Conquer in an alternative history where the Soviet Union has invaded Eastern Europe and started a new war against the remaining European countries and the United States.

When the game was released in 1996 it was praised by fans and critics alike for its intuitive user interface and gameplay that was ahead of its time. New, groundbreaking features introduced with the release of Command & Conquer Red Alert included the ability to queue commands, create and assign multiple units into a single group by a simple drag and select, as well as multiple factions with different strengths and weaknesses. These features have since become standard for the genre.

Release 20210321 and a new website

Today is the day that many have been waiting for: the new stable OpenRA Release 20210321 is now available!

We had originally planned to announce this release with a new patch spotlight video, but an unfortunately timed computer failure has left FiveAces’ battlefield control offline until repairs are completed. Rather than continue to delay the release, we have commissioned our best artist to make the placeholder image below, and will post the real spotlight once it is available.

The 20210321 release spotlight has been temporarily delayed. Stay tuned for updates!

Many of the biggest changes in this release were focused around the in-development Tiberian Sun mod, which continues to make slow progress in our development repository. There are many great changes for Red Alert, Tiberian Dawn, and Dune 2000 too, focusing mainly around streamlining some awkward gameplay mechanics, improving community integration, and improving our singleplayer content:

  • Support for Discord integration and community-run ladders
  • New lobby features for player handicaps and disabling spawn points
  • Community balance updates and a refreshed map selection for Red Alert and Tiberian Dawn
  • Further adjustments to make Dune 2000 more faithful to the original game
  • More fluid infantry combat after fixing several long-standing combat bugs
  • Nine more campaign missions have been ported for Red Alert
  • Improved AI behaviour and performance

These features and more will be explained in more detail in the upcoming release spotlight, but for now you can look back over the previous news posts [1, 2, 3] or the full changelog for more information.

An important compatibility note is that OpenRA now requires GPU support for either OpenGL 3.2, DirectX 11, or OpenGL ES 3. Moving away from the legacy OpenGL 2.1 is important for future compatibility with modern rendering APIs (Vulkan/Metal) and for improving rendering performance with Tiberian Sun and the C&C Remastered Collection. This does unfortunately mean dropping support for some older systems (typically 10+ years old) that currently can run OpenRA, but we believe that this is a necessary tradeoff for the future.

The new OpenRA website brings a new look and improved functionality.

We are also today deploying a brand new website design. Lead by @Fauntleroy with feedback from our GitHub and Discord communities, the fresh look also brings some important technology upgrades that improve the website behaviour on mobile devices, and adds new features for the live games list. We expect to continue improving and iterating on the new site, so let us know if you think that something important is missing or simply doesn’t look right.

Let us know what you think of the new release and updated website in the comments below, on our forum, community discord, or GitHub. We hope you’ll enjoy these new updates! Have fun!
