Red Faction 2 – экшен шутер от первого лица. Действия разворачиваются на Земле, а не на Марсе, как в первой части. После окончания событий на другой планете, человеческая раса получила доступ к высокотехнологическому оружию, но с не с плохими намерениями. Террористические организации украли эти разработки и начали создавать оружие, из-за которого может начаться, скорее всего, последняя война человечества. Вам понадобиться противостоять противникам, уничтожить все базы врагов и не дать им заполучить полный контроль над технологиями.
Игровой процесс вмещает 4 различные концовки, они будут исходить из ваших предпочтений по мере прохождения сюжета. Вы обязаны следовать сюжетным локациям, но сможете заходить во второстепенные области и выполнять побочные миссии. На местности можно найти боеприпасы или другое оружие. В Red Faction 2 главный герой способен использовать два вида оружия одновременно, повышая эпичность картинки и эффективность боевого потенциала.
Окружающий мир, как и в предыдущей части, можно разрушать, взаимодействовать с объектами и использовать их, чтобы убивать оппонентов. Стреляйте по взрывоопасным бочкам, разрушайте стены, подрывайте колонны и делайте все, чтобы сломать больше местности вокруг себя.
