Create a recovery drive

It’s a good idea to create a recovery drive. That way, if your PC ever experiences a major issue such as hardware failure, you’ll be able to use the recovery drive to reinstall Windows 10. Windows updates to improve security and PC performance periodically so it is recommended to recreate the recovery drive annually. Personal files and any applications that did not come with your PC will not be backed up. You’ll need a USB drive that’s at least 16 gigabytes.

Warning: Use an empty USB drive because this process will erase any data that’s already stored on the drive.

To create a recovery drive in Windows 10:

In the search box next to the Start button, search for Create a recovery drive and then select it. You might be asked to enter an admin password or confirm your choice.

When the tool opens, make sure Back up system files to the recovery drive is selected and then select Next.

Connect a USB drive to your PC, select it, and then select Next.

Select Create. Many files need to be copied to the recovery drive, so this might take a while.

It’s a good idea to back up your files frequently because the recovery drive isn’t a system image. It doesn’t contain your personal files, settings, or programs.

How do I reinstall Windows on to a different drive?

So earlier today my hard drive couldn’t boot. It would say «Preparing automatic repair» BSOD, then restart. I couldn’t load SafeMode, I don’t have my installation disc. However, my laptop’s hard drive was SATA compatible and I booted into that. But I’m not willing to stay in this drive all day. How can I reinstall windows on to my main hard drive without losing personal files?

I have prepared a USB installation media, but when I enter a product key it says I have to boot into the drive and start setup on the main computer. But like I said, I cant boot into that computer.

I DO have the product key from my main drive.

To boot your PC from the Installation Media you just created, insert the installation media, then enter your BIOS and change Boot Order so the installation media is top of the boot order . . .

If you have problems booting from a boot disc, you may have UEFI BIOS, go into your BIOS and make the following changes:

1. Insert the Bootable Media
2. Disable Secure Boot
3. Enable Legacy Boot
4. If Available enable CSM
5. If Required enable USB Boot
6. Move the device with the bootable disc to the top of the boot order
7. Save BIOS changes and restart your System

Since you previously had Windows 10 installed and activated on that PC during the installation process skip the steps which ask for a product key and select the option ‘I am Reinstalling Windows 10 on this PC’ , and activation will not be an issue, your PC will have a digital entitlement stored on the Microsoft Activation Servers

NOTE: during the installation process, your system will reboot, at that point, you may need to go into your BIOS and change the boot order so your system boots from your Hard Drive, otherwise the installation may start all over again — do not remove the installation media at this point

Признаюсь честно, редко когда Windows держалась у меня без переустановки более полугода. Раньше решение было простое — переустановка ОС, которая во времена Windows 10 стала быстрой и простой как никогда, установка программ и игр, и через пару часов быстрая и свежая система была снова готова к работе. Но сейчас ситуация изменилась. Количество игр на моем ПК превысило пару десятков, установлено штук 15 необходимых и настроенных утилит, которые я часто применяю, вдобавок старушка GeForce RTX 1060 круглосуточно трудится, пытаясь окупить себя уже в третий или четвертый раз.

Да и написание блогов занимает у меня по 3-4 часа почти ежедневно, в результате чего Windows 10 May 2020 Update, установленная у меня в сентябре 2020 года, работает уже восьмой месяц, обновившись до October 2020 Update, и, надеюсь, протянет хотя бы еще полгода, ведь переустанавливать ее совсем нет сил, времени и желания.

Думаю, многие читатели, занятые серьезной работой на ПК, посмеются над моими причинами держаться за Windows из-за игрушек, утилит и любительского майнинга, и я полностью с ними соглашусь.

Грубо говоря, переустановить Windows 10 сможет каждый ламер, а вот исправить серьезную проблему — только опытный пользователь, да и то не всякий.

Бэкап, бекап и еще раз бекап

Хоть мы и будем использовать проверенные и официальные инструменты для починки Windows 10, обязательно сделайте бэкап важных файлов и всего системного диска встроенными средствами. Это займет не так уж много времени, а лишним не будет никогда.

Дифференцируем проблемы софта от проблем железа

Иногда компьютер глючит так, что совершенно непонятно — Windows 10 это не перенесла очередного обновления или ваш SSD отходит в мир иной. Множество трудно диагностируемых сбоев могут вызвать проблемы с ОЗУ, перегрев, плохой блок питания или банальное окисление контактов на материнской плате.

Поэтому не помешает, как минимум, убедиться в исправности ваших накопителей и отсутствии перегрева компонентов. Посмотрите хотя бы температуры компонентов и S.M.A.R.T. накопителей.

Убеждаемся, что ПК не заражен вредоносными программами

Несмотря на то, что количество вредоносных программ растет с каждым годом, а по миру идет просто эпидемия вирусов-шифровальщиков, могущих легко оставить вас без важных и невосполнимых данных, секта «отрицателей антивирусов» только множится. Их легко можно было понять лет 10-20 назад, когда ПК были слабы для антивируса, а из ценных данных на них хранились только ваши сохранения игр.

Сегодня ПК — это лакомый объект для воровства разнообразных аккаунтов, денег с электронных кошельков, ресурсов для майнинга и шифрования данных для выкупа. Но несмотря на это, многие пользователи считают, что не кликая по подозрительным ссылкам и ставя игры только из Steam, они обезопасят себя. К счастью для секты «отрицателей антивирусов» большинство из них находится под незаметной защитой «Защитника Windows» и встроенных систем безопасности в браузерах.

Но не помешает проверить ПК дополнительно с помощью таких средств, как Dr.Web CureIt!, RogueKiller Anti-Malware Free и Malwarebytes Free. По своему опыту могу сказать, что даже набор из хорошего антивируса и этих утилит может пропустить хитрый майнер или троян, который еще не успел засветиться в антивирусных базах. В этом случае стоит понаблюдать за поведением ПК в простое с помощью программ аппаратного мониторинга, ища подозрительные продолжительные нагрузки на процессор и видеокарту.

Удаляем лишний и ненужный софт

Сторонний софт может создавать множество проблем и конфликтовать друг с другом и Windows. Поэтому при поиске проблем рекомендуется удалить все лишнее и ненужное, без чего можно обойтись на ПК. Игры которые вы не запускали месяцами, утилиты, которыми почти не пользуетесь, а главное, софт от производителей железа. MSI Dragon Center или AI Suite от ASUS — даже ПК оверклокера прекрасно может обойтись без этих программ.

Заодно стоит проверить автозагрузку на предмет ненужных утилит, которые у многих живут там без дела годами, таких, как например, утилиты от встроенных звуковых карт.

Чистим мусор, накопившийся в ОС

Не помешает очистить мусор, которыми забиваются временные папки Windows, да и свободное место на системном диске редко бывает лишним. Сделать это можно встроенными средствами Windows 10 или утилитой Wise Disk Cleaner. Утилита неплохо показала себя в сравнении со старожилом чистки ПК — CCleaner, что показало сравнение их в блоге «Выбираем удобный и надежный «чистильщик» Windows 10 — сравниваем CCleaner или Wise Disk Cleaner«.

Проверяем системные файлы Windows 10

Все вышеописанное было только приготовлениями к восстановлению Windows 10, которые не помешает делать регулярно даже на стабильно работающем ПК. А теперь мы займемся восстановлением и начнем со стандартной утилиты System File Checker, запустить которую можно в командной строке от имени Администратора.
Команда sfc /scannow проверит и восстановит важные файлы Windows на целостность и восстановит их. System File Checker — не панацея от сбоев, но часто находит и исправляет поврежденные файлы.

Более серьезное средство восстановление файлов Windows 10 — утилита DISM, которую тоже следует запускать из командной строки от имени Администратора. Обе утилиты, и System File Checker и DISM, работают с системой Windows Resource Protection, которая защищает ключи в реестре, директории, а также критические системные файлы. Но отличие DISM в том, что она обращается не к внутреннему кешу хранилища, а через службу Windows Update сверяет системные файлы с оригиналами.

И простая команда Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth может исправить довольно серьезные проблемы с системой, даже после вирусного заражения. Но при этом у вас должно работать соединение с интернетом.

Анализируем синие экраны смерти или BSOD

Если ваш ПК выпадает в BSOD, с одной стороны — это плохой признак довольно серьезной проблемы, с другой — по коду в BSOD мы можем определить источник проблемы. Поможет в этом утилита BlueScreenView, про которую я уже писал в цикле блогов «10 небольших полезных и бесплатных утилит, упрощающих использование Windows 10«. Утилита поможет выявить источник BSOD или дать вам направление, в котором нужно искать в поисковиках при данных BSOD.

Тотально переустанавливаем драйвера

Драйвера на видеокарту или материнскую плату — частый источник проблем, которые может помочь решить их переустановка, желательно на новую версию. При переустановке драйверов не помешает воспользоваться утилитой Display Driver Uninstaller, которая удаляет все остатки и «хвосты» от старых драйверов.

Не помешает переустановить драйвера даже на такие устройства как принтеры, веб-камеры, мыши и прочую периферию. Судя по новостям в СМИ, принтеры и веб-камеры — это ахиллесова пята Windows 10 уже года три.

Что делать дальше и что еще может помочь?

На первый взгляд может показаться, что все действия, описанные выше, займут гораздо больше времени, чем простая переустановка Windows 10 с настройкой программ, но их необязательно делать все сразу, тем более, что большинство из них работает в фоне, не мешая вам.
Как правило, эти средства могут вам помочь, но довольно тесно зная Windows 10, я не удивлюсь, что легко можно встретить такой баг, с исправлением которого вам не поможет и техподдержка Microsoft.

В этом случае стоит поспрашивать советов на форумах, посвященных Windows 10, где пользователи часто предлагают очень оригинальные и действенные способы решения проблем. Ну а если решение проблемы так и не находится даже коллективным разумом, надо решаться на переустановку.

Please note this article details instructions about migrating from preview builds of Windows 10 to a previous version of Windows (Windows 7 or 8/8.1). Although the article discusses pre-release Windows 10 builds, the same instructions work if you are running the final version of Windows 10 and want to reinstall your previous version Windows.

The Windows 10 Previews currently available will eventually expire. The expectation among users should be that they will either need to upgrade to the final release or reinstall their previous version of Windows after they have completed their evaluation of the Windows 10 Preview. Microsoft officials recently indicated the intention of having the preview releases support upgrades to the final version. This is the intention, but of course, things can always change on the road to RTM. With the excitement surrounding the arrival of a new major release of Windows and the more public approach to testing Windows pre-release version, a lot of persons who are normally not exposed to beta testing are jumping in without hesitation.

If you decide to pay for the final release or you would like to restore your previous version of Windows, you will need to be prepared if this becomes the eventuality. The following wiki article shows you how.

If you upgraded or migrated your previous version of Windows to Windows 10 you can consider the Rollback option. If you have been diligently updating to each new build of Windows 10, you will be able to go back to the most recent build. If you somehow migrated from Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7/8/8.1 to Windows 10 and find out there is no option to go back, then you will have to prepare to do so manually. Microsoft has indicated when users upgrade or migrate to Windows 10, the recovery partition used to restore your system to its original factory state becomes inoperable. The recovery partition is used in the event you need to reinstall Windows on your computer.

What is the recovery partition?

Some computers that come preinstalled with Windows often have what is called a recovery partition. This is used to reinstall the operating system in the event of a system crash. To access it, you will need to boot into when you start your computer by pressing a function key. This can be either F1, F2, F9, F10, F11, F12 or even DEL or Tab key.

For some Windows XP, Vista and even Windows 7 users, if you don’t have a recovery partition, you might have to use the recovery media that came with your computer to reinstall Windows. The recovery media often comes on a DVD or set of CDs that are sometimes labeled Recovery, Operating System, Drivers and are installed according to how the disc is labeled (Disc 1, Disc 2, Disc 3). Unfortunately, sometimes these discs get lost or damaged. Your best course of action is to request recovery media from the manufacturer of the computer.

What if you upgraded to a retail copy of Windows?

If you upgraded to a retail version of Windows, then you can use your reinstall disc to reinstall Windows on your computer. See links below for

UPDATE: Since publishing this article, Microsoft has discontinued availability of Windows 7 and Windows Vista ISO images through Digital River.

For the past 5 years Microsoft made it quite easy for users of the Windows 7 operating system to obtain reinstall media. If you lost your retail installation disc or recovery media; either it was damaged or faulty; you could download a copy of the edition you have a license for from an affiliate website named Digital River. Most recently, Microsoft ended availability of reinstall media which you could download as a .ISO file from Digital River, which is a digital replica of a optical disc.

This was especially handy for persons who could not easily obtain recovery media from the manufacturer, did not want to pay the cost required to obtain it or preferred a clean configuration without the manufacturers bundled software or even a non-functional recovery partition. It was easy to use, all you had to do was reinstall and reactivate using the product key located on the certificate of authenticity and download any appropriate drivers from the manufacturers website.

Windows 8/8.1

Windows 8/8.1 users are sometimes limited in this respect, this is especially true for owners of certain form factors such as Ultrabooks that do not have optical drives normally used to facilitate the restoration of a system. In this case, you will have to manually download a copy of Windows 8/8.1 in order to reinstall the operating system. Unfortunately, this can be quite a chore. Fortunately, due to possible feedback and ongoing refinements and third party advancements, reinstalling Windows 8/8.1 since its release in 2012 is a lot more convenient.

Downloading Windows 8/8.1 — things to take into consideration

If you were running Windows 8.0 prior to upgrading to Windows 10, think deeply whether you want to go back to this release or just go directly to Windows 8.1 with Update 1 which can be easily downloaded. Windows 8 users have until early 2016 to upgrade to Windows 8.1 with Update 1 in order to continue receiving support. January 2016 might seem like a long time away, but its best you do it now to save you all the trouble. Besides, its way more reliable, considering that for Windows 8 installations, upgrading to Update 1 is a staged process, you have to first upgrade to Windows 8.1 through the Store, then install Update 1 through Windows Update. By simply downloading Windows 8.1 with Update 1 media, you avoid all this.

How do you do it?

Microsoft recently released a new Media Creation Tool which you directly download and create a .ISO file for Windows 8.1 with Update 1.

Lets take a look at how that is done.

First download the Media Creation Tool from the following link and save it to your Downloads folder:

Double click Media Creation Tool file to launch setup.

Wait while setup begins

The following window allows you to select the Language, edition (Core or Pro), Architecture (32 or 64 bit).

The above example shows all of the selected options.

To determine if your system came preinstalled with Windows 8 Core or Pro, look at the bottom of your laptop or on the chassis of the machine for one of the stickers.

Choose how you want to prepare your files.

Install by creating media

This I think is one of the most important steps, a lot of persons do not have fast Internet Connections, or they are using metered Internet Connections which prohibits them from downloading large files using their ISP over a period of time. Windows 8 is a 2 GB download which is still significantly large for some Internet Connections.

USB flash drive

If you have a thumb drive with 3 GBs of available space, you can use that to create a bootable copy. Thumb drives are very cheap these days, so pick up a couple and create one as your first backup option. This is especially recommended for persons using Ultrabooks which do not include optical drives (DVD) or Netbooks. There are some desktop systems that do not include one.

ISO file

An ISO file is a digital or virtual replica of a physical disc. In order to use an ISO you must burn it to a optical disc. In the case of Windows 8, a blank DVD. If you are using Windows 7, you can create the .ISO and burn it using the built in Disc Image utility. If you are running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you can using a third party burning tool such as ImgBurn or Roxio/Nero.

Creating a .ISO file

For the purposes of this exercise, we are gonna use the .ISO option.

Select ISO file, then click Save

Select your location and click Save.

Wait while the .ISO image is created.

After obtaining the .iso file you use the Microsoft .iso to USB/DVD tool to create a bootable DVD or USB (requires a blank DVD or USB flash stick of at least 4 GB).

Starting the installation.

Once your computer is set to boot from the DVD, you should see this option.

If you are installing from a thumb drive, see the following instructions how to prepare your computer to boot from one:

The Windows logo will appear on screen, this might be here for a while, as long as you see the indicater, everything should be ok.

The setup screen will eventually appear, select your time and currency format then click Next.

Click Install Now

Wait while setup starts up

You will be prompted for a product key during setup. You can use a generic key which you can find at the following link.

Accept the End User License agreement and click Next

Click Custom install Windows only (advanced)

Select the system drive where Windows 8 is installed.

You will receive the following warning:
The partition you selected might contain files from a previous Windows Installation. If it does, these files and folders will be moved to a folder named Windows.old. You will be able to access the information in Windows.old, but you will be able to use your previous version of Windows.

(At all cost, do NOT click anything named Format or Delete or Partition. So even doing a custom install, your personal files are still preserved. Click OK
Setup will now start the installation. During the installation, your machine will be restarted several times.

When the installation is complete, you can complete the Out of Box experience such as selecting your computer, create a username, password, your time zone. You can then proceed to download the latest updates for Windows and reinstall your applications and drivers.

You can then recover your personal files from the Windows.old folder and reinstall all your applications and drivers. Or you can use Windows Easy Transfer to restore your backup.

Retrieve your product key:

With Windows 8, Microsoft has changed from stickers that have the product key that the user has to type in when installing the operating system to new BIOS embedded product keys. The idea is that by eliminating the sticker, you eliminate one of the easier ways for nefarious users to get a legitimate product key. Eliminating the product key sticker also removes any worry that the sticker might get damaged while at the same time eliminating the long and irritating process of typing in various letters and numbers when installing the operating system.

If the user has to reinstall the operating system on a machine that came with Windows 8, the installation process automatically grabs the software product key from the motherboard BIOS with no input from the user. This means that those familiar Windows product key stickers will no longer appear on the Windows 8 computers.
