How to Remove Flash From Windows 10

By Bryan Clark 03 November 2019

If you’d prefer to rid yourself of a program that could lead to security issues later, we’re going to help you out.

Windows 10, in 2019, still comes with Flash pre-installed. We don’t understand why, either. Flash has, for years, been a real security threat to most modern machines. And worse, it’s not needed now that HTML 5 has become the web standard.

If you’d prefer to rid yourself of a program that could lead to security issues later, we’re going to help you out. Unfortunately, Flash isn’t completely uninstalled through the Uninstall programs menu in Windows Settings. But, Adobe does have an uninstall utility. Just remember to remove the Flash plugin from your browsers after you use it.

1) In a web browser, open https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

2) Click the Uninstaller link to download the file.

3) Right-click the executable file once it is downloaded.

4) Click Open to run the uninstaller.

5) In the Uninstall wizard, click UNINSTALL.

6) When the process is complete click DONE.

7) In Microsoft Edge, click on the Settings menu icon ( ⠇) in the upper right corner.

8) Click Settings.

9) Click the Advanced Settings icon to open additional settings.

10) Switch off the toggle button for the option ‘Use Adobe Flash Player’.

11) Click X in the upper right corner to close the window.

How to completely uninstall & remove Adobe Flash Player from Windows 10

Modern-day web browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and others include an embedded copy of Flash. So, if you are running a Windows 10 computer, you can have up to 4 copies of Adobe Flash Player: one for Internet Explorer, one for Microsoft Edge, one for Firefox, and one for Opera, respectively. Also, you may find instances where two Flash players are running simultaneously, one installed in Chrome as a single plugin and the other installed in Windows, trying to parse the data.

At such times, you may want to remove or uninstall one of the versions of Adobe Flash Player. This post walks you through the process of removing the Embedded Adobe Flash from Windows 10 PC.

How to remove Adobe Flash Player from Windows 10

Before proceeding further, you should sign in with your administrative account and disable the Flash Player in your browser, even if you are not using it or set it as the default browser.

To completely uninstall Adobe Flash Player from your Windows 10 computer, you can follow any one of these methods:

  1. Use Adobe Flash Uninstaller
  2. Run KB4577586
  3. Manually remove Flash.

Let us take a look at these methods.

1] Use Adobe Flash Uninstaller

To completely uninstall and remove Adobe Flash Player from your Windows computer, download Adobe Flash Uninstaller by clicking here.

Next, close all your programs including your browsers and run Adobe Flash Uninstaller. It executes on both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of the Windows operating systems. Then delete all the files in these folders:

  • C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
  • %appdata%\Adobe\Flash Player
  • %appdata%\Macromedia\Flash Player

Once you do this, restart your computer.

Then open your browser and check the status of Flash Player by going here.

2] Run KB4577586

Adobe Flash Player will go out of support on December 31, 2020. To help users, Microsoft has released KB4577586 to uninstall Flash from your PC. You can use this Flash Removal Tool, by going here.

3] Manually remove Flash

Next, open File Explorer and go the following address C:\Windows\servicing\Packages and check for the following entries-

    Adobe-Flash-For-Windows-Package

amd64…. (version number of the Flash Player)
Adobe-Flash-For-Windows-WOW64-Package

amd64…. (version number of the Flash player #)
Adobe-Flash-For-Windows-onecoreuap-Package

amd64… (version number of the Flash Player)

Note down these Adobe-Flash packages names.

Now, open the Registry editor by launching the ‘Run’ dialog box and entering ‘regedit.exe’ in its empty field. Hit ‘Enter’.

Right-click the three keys which have the above 3 names, individually, one after the other, and select ‘Permissions’.

Enable Full control for the Administrators account by checking ‘Allow’.

Now, select each of the 3 keys one after the other and then select Visibility DWORD on the right side. Right-click on Visibility and change the Value Data from 2 to 1.

Repeat the same procedure for the other keys as well.

Having done that, you will now be able to remove Packages using the DISM utility. So open an elevated command prompt and execute the following 3 commands one after the other:

NOTE: The numbers at the end could be different in your case, because of the version number difference, so use the numbers on your system.

This action will remove everything inside the Macromed folder under System32 as well as the SysWOW64 folders.

Restart your system.

This completes our action of completely removing the embedded Adobe Flash Player from Windows 10.

How do I uninstall Flash from Windows 10?

How do I uninstall Flash from Windows 10? The Flash plugin in Chrome has a propensity to crash if there are two flash players running at the same time trying to parse the data. There’s only one installed in Chrome — a single plugin:

Description: Shockwave Flash 15.0 r0
Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\38.0.2125.101\PepperFlash\pepflashplayer.dll
MIME types:
MIME type Description File extensions
application/x-shockwave-flash Shockwave Flash
.swf
application/futuresplash FutureSplash Player

But there’s also one installed in Windows. When I hit the Windows 10 Windows button (Start button), then type in «Flash» I get an Adobe Flash with an app-like icon next to it, but right clicking on it does nothing. Left clicking brings up a «Flash Player Settings Manager». I don’t see Flash (or Shockwave or anything Adobe) in the Uninstall menu in the Control Panel. When I click the Start/Windows button then click the All Apps dropdown, I don’t see Flash listed there. But it still seems to be installed somewhere. So how do I uninstall it? I can’t find an unambiguous list of every installed app that lets me choose what to uninstall.

That’s not quite true. I’ve already gone in and uninstalled Internet Explorer.

Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

Turn Windows features on or off

Then I unchecked Internet Explorer 11. IE shouldn’t exist on my computer anymore.

I’m not concerned about Flash as a security leak, I’m concerned that it keeps **** up my Chrome pages. I shouldn’t be stuck with a malfunctioning Adobe Flash installation, I should be able to delete it if I want.

Banaticus, is technically correct, in that you have turned the feature off, the program data is still on your computer, but because you have turned it ‘off’, the program is no longer working or using up any resources on your PC, for all practical purposes it is ‘un-installed’.

The ‘Flash’ element in Internet Explorer is devised and develop specifically by MS for IE, it has nothing to do with ‘Adobe’ and because you have turned IE ‘off’, the MS Flash is not running and is not causing interference with your Chrome installation.

If you did not have Chrome installed you would have no requirement to install Adobe / Shochwave Flash, unless you had another browser installed that required it ie: Firefox.

If ‘flash’ is causing a problem contact Chrome support.

I received a email about your post today 9-22-2015. The flash player settings manager you get when you do a windows search should be located in Original (windows 7) Control Panel / System and Settings bottom of page.

Windows 10 installs flash player with absolutely no means of uninstalling it. I even tried third party uninstallers. Even when you turn it off through edge it is still active on your computer because you open IE11 and flash is active in that browser. You can turn of activeXfilters or delete flash from Manage add-ons in IE11, but flash is still installed on your computer. Your ahead of the game because you’ve uninstall IE.

The flash uninstaller won’t uninstall flash player from windows 10.

I went ahead and ran it anyway. If you follow the instruction from step 3. and manually delete the content from those folders flash will be removed from your computer.

I had to change the permissions of those folders and their content in order to delete them. For the average user that is a complete nightmare.

Or it was for me at least.

I am now getting Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3087040) — Error 0x800f0922 from windows 10 updates.
