Restart on Crash is a lightweight Windows application whose purpose is to help users automatically relaunch any program that hangs or crashes.

Since this is a portable tool, it is important to mention that it doesn’t leave any traces in the Windows Registry.

You can copy it on any USB flash drive or other devices, and take it with you whenever you need to monitor utilities and restart them on the breeze, without having to go through installation steps.

Restart on Crash boasts a clean and intuitive layout that offers several configuration settings to tinker with.

It gives you the possibility to monitor an application by selecting the EXE file. Plus, the tool is able to list the processes that are currently running on your computer and lets you pick the one to be processed.

What’s more, you can add multiple utilities, edit or delete the selected one, restart the current program if it’s not responding to Windows messages and running, as well as wait until the tool is relaunched for a user-defined time.

Other notable characteristics worth mentioning are represented by the possibility to make Restart on Crash execute a custom command and kill the process (if it’s still running) after a crash. The aforementioned configuration settings can be applied for each utility.

Additionally, you can check the log section for details about the entire process and possible errors, and make the application run at Windows startup.

During our testing we have noticed that Restart on Crash carries out a task quickly, and no errors showed up throughout the entire operation. It is quite friendly with system resources, so the overall performance of the computer is not affected.

Работающие в Windows 10 приложения могут внезапно закончить свою работу или намертво зависнуть, так бывает. Это совсем необязательно указывает на нестабильность приложения и наличие в нём ошибок, такие неполадки могут вызываться и другими причинами. Приложение может «упасть» или зависнуть, если в самой Windows наблюдаются проблемы или компонент, от которого оно зависит, поврежден или работает некорректно. Некоторые приложения умеют перезапускаться после аварии, но большинство программ такой способностью не обладают.

Компенсировать этот недостаток может Restart on Crash — небольшая портативная бесплатная утилита, предназначенная для автоматического перезапуска сбойных и зависших процессов. Находясь в активном состоянии, она отслеживает статус добавленных в её список приложений и перезапускает их, если по какой-то причине они перестают отвечать или завершаются некорректно. Restart on Crash имеет легкий интерфейс и минимум настроек, посему взята она может быть на вооружения даже начинающими пользователями.

Единственный минус — в утилите нет русского языка, но это не должно стать особым препятствием.

Запустив утилиту, нажмите кнопку «Add» и выберите в открывшемся окне нажатием кнопки «Select a file» исполняемый файл приложения, процесс которого намереваетесь отслеживать. Также вы можете нажать «Select a running application».

И выбрать приложение из списка запущенных процессов, однако будьте осторожны, так как в нём перечислены и процессы в самой Windows. Если не знаете, за что отвечает тот или иной процесс, лучше не трогайте его.

В этом же окошке можно задать настройки мониторинга, например, указать утилите, при выполнении каких условий проблемный процесс должен быть перезапущен: когда он не отвечает или же когда он внезапно падает. Можно задать время повторной проверки отклика зависшего процесса, а также уточнить действие, которое должно будет выполняться после падения сбойного приложения. Доступны принудительное завершение процесса (если окно закрыто, а сам процесс еще висит) , закрытие всех не отвечающих процессов и выполнение определенную команды.

Когда Restart on Crash обнаруживает, что приложение не отвечает или не работает, он ждёт 60 секунд (это время по умолчанию) , а затем перезапускает его. Restart on Crash хорошо показал себя с десктопными программами, чего нельзя сказать об универсальных приложениях. Работу с некоторыми из них он поддерживает, с некоторыми нет. И ещё. Утилита предназначается исключительно для перезапуска приложений, она не сохраняет никаких результатов их работы и уж тем более не создает снапшотов состояния.

Automatically Restart Crashed Or Hanged Applications

Don’t you hate it when programs hang or crash? I find it especially annoying when a background application like an IM client or a bandwidth monitor silently crashes – sometimes I only notice the problem hours later when I’ve already missed a bunch of messages. I’m sure you’ve encountered a few “Not responding” errors and some irritatingly crash-prone applications yourself.

If you have an unstable program that you absolutely need to run at all times, but don’t want to waste your time monitoring and manually restarting it every time it croaks, I might have something interesting for you.

Restart on Crash is an monitoring tool that will watch the applications that you specify and automatically relaunch any program that hangs or crashes. You can add any number of applications to monitor, enable/disable them individually and edit the command line that will be used to restart an application.

Restart on Crash doesn’t require installation and stores all it’s configuration data in a “settings.ini” file in the program’s folder, so it’s portable. It should be compatible with most NT-based Windows versions.

• To add a new application to monitor, click the “Add” button or press the Ins key.
• To delete on or more applications from the list, select them and click “Delete” or press Del .
• To edit the per-application configuration, double-click the corresponding row. This will open the editing dialog (see below).
• You can also access the RoC configuration by clicking “Settings” and view the activity log by clicking “Show Log”. The log contains information about crashed/hanged applications, executed commands, and so on.

Well, this one should be pretty self-explanatory 🙂 One detail to keep in mind is that enabling the “It isn’t running” option will make Restart On Crash treat the application as if it has crashed even if you have purposefully it closed it. You can get around this by disabling the monitoring of the application before you close it.

Windows 10 Taskbar Keeps Crashing/Restarting

This is a significant problem mainly because it happens every minute or two and because every time it happens, Windows Explorer closes and I have to re-navigate to my desired file folder again.

So, here’s what happens:

• Every 2 minutes or so, the taskbar goes all black — there are no icons there any more
• If I’m in the middle of an action (like entering a formula or using a menu in Excel) that program will hang or freeze momentarily. If typing a formula in Excel, I will need to re-enter it.
• The taskbar flickers once and then the icons reappear. It’s as if the taskbar is constantly rebooting
• The above issues are annoying, but at least the programs I am using (Excel, etc) remain open.
• The biggest problem is that Windows File Explorer appears to restart every time the taskbar does. As stated above, this means I have to navigate to find whatever files I need to use all over again.

It’s totally ridiculous. It’s a serious bug that is hampering my ability to do work on this computer. As of now, I completely regret upgrading from Windows 7. How long does a roll-back take?

There are other posts regarding this, but none of the answers are satisfactory.

So I am asking again.

P.S. I already opened a command prompt as an administrator and did a system scan (sfc / scan now, I think). It came back clean.

I also uninstalled my IDT sound drivers and rebooted.

Assistance is much appreciated.

I would suggest you to use DISM command and then check if taskbar crashes.

a: Press Windows key + X.

b: Then click Command prompt(Admin)

c: Now type the following command and hit enter

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Important: When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files.

Please revert if you face any issues with Taskbar crashing.

Also, can you do the following:

Windows Key + S > type view all problem reports then click on «View all problem reports Control panel»

Can you right-click on a few of the «Windows Explorer» «Stopped working» errors > View technical details

What are the details of the errors?

Unfortunately, nothing really happens when I run the program.

This is what I see:

UPDATE: It’s now starting, to run, 20 minutes after I started it. It’s at 20% now.

UPDATE 2: It’s 100% completed. All I see is «The restore operation completed successfully» and below it «The operation completed successfully». That’s it. Do I reboot?

Interestingly, I used the Windows Snipping tool to capture this. When I used the «Save As» option to save my file so that I could upload it here, there was a lot of «Not Responding». I also created a «New Folder» folder within my Pictures folder to store future images for this thread, but it never showed up. I had to «Save As» again from the Snipping Tool to see the folder.

Also, please monitor my responses to other suggestions in this thread. For example, another person on here suggested that I go to the Control Panel. This is another issue that happens: accessing the Control Panel causes it to freeze, hang and crash much like Windows File Explorer or the taskbar. When I need to access something in the Control Panel, I have to search for the sub-item in the task bar (eg. search for «Systems and Maintenance») and go directly to it. It will not work when going through the Control Panel.

Oh, and finally, I tried to reply to this thread while in Chrome, but when I pressed the «Submit» button, nothing happened. So I had to copy over everything to Edge and try to post. This also happened when registering here. It didn’t work in Chrome. This is immensely frustrating.

Disable Auto Restart on Crash in Windows 10 Kiosk Mode

Assigned Access is a feature of Windows 10 which implements Kiosk mode for the selected user account. If you create such Kiosk for the specified user account on your PC, that user will be forced to interact with a single app without the risk of compromising the system. If Windows 10 crashes in Kiosk mode, it may automatically restart. You can change this behavior.

You can use assigned access to restrict users to using only one Windows app so the device acts like a kiosk. A kiosk device typically runs a single app, and users are prevented from accessing any features or functions on the device outside of the kiosk app. Administrators can use assigned access to restrict a selected user account to access a single Windows app. You can choose almost any Windows app for assigned access.

Here are some notes.

• Windows apps must be provisioned or installed for the assigned access account before they can be selected as the assigned access app.
• Updating a Windows app can sometimes change the Application User Model ID (AUMID) of the app. If this happens, you must update the assigned access settings to launch the updated app, because assigned access uses the AUMID to determine which app to launch.
• Apps that are generated using the Desktop App Converter (Desktop Bridge) cannot be used as kiosk apps.
• Avoid selecting Windows apps that are designed to launch other apps as part of their core functionality.
• In Windows 10, version 1803, you can install the Kiosk Browser app from Microsoft to use as your kiosk app. For digital signage scenarios, you can configure Kiosk Browser to navigate to a URL and show only that content — no navigation buttons, no address bar, etc.

Starting in Windows 10 version 1709, it is possible to create kiosks that run multiple apps .

To disable Auto Restart on Crash in Windows 10 Kiosk Mode, do the following.

1. Configure the Assigned Access feature if required.
2. Now, open the Settings app.
3. Go to Accounts -> Family & other users.
4. Click on the link Set up assigned access on the right.
   
5. On the next page, disable the option When the device crashes, don’t show an error, and automatically restart.

So, if Windows 10 crashes, you will see an error message/BSOD. The computer won’t be restarted automatically.

Alternatively, you can apply a Registry tweak to disable or enable this feature.

Disable Auto Restart in Kiosk Mode with a Registry tweak

1. Open the Registry Editor app.
2. Go to the following Registry key.

On the right, create a new 32-Bit DWORD value DisplayDisabled.
Note: Even if you are running 64-bit Windows you must still create a 32-bit DWORD value.
Set its value to 1. A value data of 0 restores the default behavior.
