stuck at «Restoring your previous version of Windows»

I bought a HP sleekbook about 3 months ago. Last night it recommended that I update from windows 8 to 8.1, so I installed the update.

Today the screen alternates between being completely black and the message «restoring your previous version of windows.» I.e. no login screen or anything!

I’m not brilliant with computers but was told to try a hard reboot, it has made no difference. Short of taking it to be repaired I have no idea what else to try.

Would really appreciate any help anyone could offer!

This issue might be happening due to the boot files are corrupted. I suggest you to try the following steps and check if it helps.

I like to suggest you to disconnect any external hardware (monitors, printers, USB devices etc) from the computer except the keyboard and the mouse.

Now, hard shutdown the computer and then try to perform the System Restore with the Windows 8 DVD. Check if that helps.

If you are not able to boot the computer then you should require a Windows 8 DVD or the USB to fix the issue.

If you don’t have a Windows 8 DVD, you can refer to the article mentioned below to know how to create a bootable USB for Windows 8.

Create installation media for Windows 8.1

b) In the “Windows Setup” dialog box that appears, set the Time and currency format, Keyboard or input method and the language to install and then click “Next”.

c) Click on “Repair your computer” from the lower left corner.

d) From the “Choose an option screen”, click on “Troubleshoot”.

e) Click “Advanced Options” in the “Troubleshoot” screen.

f) In the “Advanced Options” screen, select “System Restore”.

g) Follow the on screen instructions to restore the computer to an earlier state when the computer was working fine.

Now check if you are able to boot the computer successfully.

Note: The System Restore restores the computer back to an earlier point in time, called a restore point. System Restore doesn’t change your personal files, but it might remove recently installed apps and drivers and also reset the recently changed settings on the computer.

Method 2:

Once you boot the computer to desktop, I suggest you to disable the antivirus software installed in the computer and unplug all the external devices connected the computer and then try to update Windows 8.1. You can refer to the following link for more information

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you’re done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Go the same issue; latest build needed extra space OR external device; the drop down offered to use my SD card with tons of GB available; averything went well but after a few reboots it asked me to «Insert the removable Media» . well since nothing was touched and the SD card was already in, I clicked OK. It asked me again after 30 sec. and again. and again. and. so I clicked cancel; then it rebooted, and started the «Restoring your previous version of Windows» . and its been rebooting to this for the last 8 hours, looping endlessly.

I would suggest you to try rebuild BCD and check if it help.

Please follow these steps.

Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows from it.

In the ‘Windows set up’ page, select the ‘Language to install ’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘Keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.

Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshooter’.

Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Command Prompt’.

At the prompt, type the bootrec command as shown below and then press entre.

The bootrec command will search for Windows installation not included in Boot Configuration Data and then it will prompt if we would like to add one or more to it.

At the installation to boot list, type Enter Y, and hit enter.

You should see this on screen:

The operation is completed successfully.

Restart the computer.
