Hi, guys/gals. I have the same problem. Mine is an F Series VAIO. I found one way to make it work although I would consider it temporary meansure: In the Device Manager, locate the Ricoh SDXC device under IDE/ATA. Right click on it and select Disable. You’ll then see the device grey out. Then right click again again to Enable it.

Viola, for me at least, it works and I can now read and write to my SD card. I ejected it and put it back in and it’s still working. Not sure if it would continue to work when I reboot.

Hopefully, this could help you read files when you are in a hurry.

I also have a VAIO F series (F23CE5) and the same problem. I found that I have to have a card in the reader during boot to have it work. If I boot without a card in the reader I can’t get it to work.

If I have booted with an SD card in the reader I can take out and insert the card without problems. The card will be recognized. But if I remove the card from the reader and bring the device into sleep mode it doesn’t recognize the reader anymore after I wake up the system.

If I put the system to sleep again, enter the card, and wake up the system, the reader is still not recognized or listed in device manager. If I display hidden devices I can see the greyed out device, but I can’t activate it. I can only deinstall it or update the driver. I tried updating the driver. It didn’t work either.

I tried deinstalling the driver and searching for new hardware with inserted card. The sd reader was not found.

So the only «solution» right now is to re-boot the system with an inserted card. Since I have plenty of programs and windows open for work it is a nightmare and an extreme waste of valuable time. Especially since I can’t bring the system into sleep mode.

I do understand your concern however, follow the below suggestions and check if it helps.

Method 1 : I would suggest you to set the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps. Setting the system in a clean boot state will help to identify if any third party applications/drivers or startup items are causing the issue. Refer the article and check if it helps.

Note: After clean boot troubleshooting steps, follow the section «How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot» in the provided link to return your computer to Normal startup mode.

Method 2 : Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Press Windows and X key together and select Control Panel.

Click on Troubleshooting.

Click on View all option on the left side of the Windows.

Click on Hardware and Devices option.

Click on Next and follow the onscreen instructions to troubleshoot the issue.

You may also try installing the latest chipset drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check.

Please update us with the status. We will be glad to assist you.

Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller is working porrly with cards, T420s

I’ve T420s, Ricoh PICe SDXC/MMC Host Controller, and several SD cards. Right away I can say that the cards (Kingston, Samsung, Transcend) are all right, tried them on different computer and phone, they work well, so I assume this is not a card issue.

I never used Card reader extensively, so I can’t say if it started lately or was always like that, my T420s is about 1 year old and I’m running Windows 7 32bit.

Here is the problem.

Device seems to be switching on and off all the time when the card is inserted or taken out.

I can say this as I’m keeping device manager window open.

It seems like the connection between card reader and motherboard (?) is very bad, as I have to press on the device to pop out and press it back in to appear in the list of devices. When I plug in the card, it might actually show up, but then, when I pop out the card and pop it back it, it won’t show again. So I have to take out the device itself again to have a chance of accessing my card.

I’ve seen this: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/SD-Card-reader-not-working-Code-22-ThinkPad-General/ta-p/759031 But even if the device appears under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, there is no «Ricoh SD Disk Device» under «Disk Drives» most of the times when I insert cards.

Anyone had similar issues?

Re: Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller is working porrly with cards, T420s

I would make sure that the BIOS is up to date. If the BIOS is not up to date, the motherboard may not be fully recognizing when a card is present in the port. The latest BIOS for your machine is 1.35, and you can find that here. So definitely make sure the BIOS is up to date and see if that helps the issue.

Re: Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller is working porrly with cards, T420s

Bumping as I have the same problem with a T430s.

Deprecated from Win 8 to 7 and everything’s working fine except for the Ricoh card reader.

I did reflash my BIOS with the latest one on the support site.

Used TV Update which selected the same drivers as listed on the support site.

The reader seems down until I insert a SD card. Laptop makes the ‘device added’ sound and shows the

Ricoh host controller under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager (not Storage Controllers). Remove the

SD card & it plays the ‘device removed’ sound & the Ricoh host controller disappears.

Uninstalled the driver & tried the T420 driver, no joy. For giggles loaded the Win 8 driver & it shows up under

Storage Controllers but is disabled because the driver isn’t signed properly.

Any thoughts appreciated.

The same problem troubled me for more than 3 years. It appears timely.
