Safari 11 for macOS Sierra & OS X El Capitan Released

Apple has released Safari 11 for macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6. The update to Safari includes various security patches, bug fixes, and includes a handful of new features for the Mac web browser.

Perhaps the most noteworthy feature of Safari 11 is that it stops media from automatically playing audio on most websites, thereby helping to prevent the user from having to mute tabs and tracking down which tab is playing sound when unexpected audio starts playing on sites like Facebook or many news websites.

Mac users can find the Safari 11 software update available in the Mac App Store Updates tab. You must be on the most recent version of Sierra or El Capitan to find the software update available, if you’re running a prior release of either Mac OS version the update does not appear to be available.

The release notes for Safari 11 include a focus on the following features and changes:

• Stop media with audio from automatically playing on most websites
• Adds the ability to configure Reader, content blockers, page zoom, and auto-play settings on a per-website basis, or for all websites
• Improves AutoFill accuracy from Contacts cards
• Includes updated media controls for HTML video and audio
• Enhances performance and efficiency

Safari 11 as a separate download is only available for Sierra and El Capitan. Safari 11 is included by default in macOS High Sierra 10.13, which is due for widespread public release for Mac users on September 25.

Question: Q: Safari Update on El Capitan

I recently upgraded from 10.10 Yosemite to 10.11 El Capitan. I’m now on 10.11.6 and have installed all available updates in the app store. However, my Safari version is still 9.1.3.

Safari 10 and 11 are compatible with El Capitan — but the app store doesn’t push them to me, and I can’t find a direct download link after alot of searching around. What to do?

You will need to systematically apply all of the El Capitan updates in order as shown from my post. The criterion for update 2017-003 (Safari 11) may be the existence of the others, and explains why you are not getting any update notices.

What is the highest version that you see? Just below Safari, will be your security updates. Look for 2017-001, 2017-002, and 2017-003. The latter contains Safari 11.

I have «Automatically check for updates» enabled.

So that means I just have to be patient — Safari 11 will show up as an update in the future?

(It was released on September, 19th).

Okay, this is getting interesting.

I have no security updates for 10.11 showing up.

When I did the upgrade from 10.10 -> 10.11 on September 26th, it booted up immediately as 10.11.6, and no additional point updates or security updates came up through the app store. So I assume, everything up to that point was part of the installer or somehow applied during the upgrade without showing up in this list.

Scrolling through the Installations list, I see that I got Safari 10.1.2, while still on Yosemite in July. However, the version in my Applications folder and the one I am running is 9.1.3. Where did the new one go? 😮

Something seems to be wrong with my Safari installation.

Question: Q: OS X El Capitan with Safari 9.1.3 .

Hi, i got a message that my Safari was outdated.

Which surprised me because I run El Capitan 10.11.6 and App store> update says: Safari version 11.0, installed sept 20 2017.

Then i checked Safari>about and it says: version 9.1.3 .

Did I -by accident- reinstall an older version of El Capitan? How can i (re?) install the latest version of Safari?

(I have an Imac early 2009)

You can do an non-intrusive re-install of Mac OS from the recovery partition. Non-intrusive means that it will not affect your data files, apps or settings it will only fill in missing parts of Mac OS. Safari is considered part of Mac OS. However even though this is non-instrusive it is wise to have a backup of your complete system, I.e. Time Machine, a bootable clone etc. Once you have a backup that you have tested then do the re-install.

To do the re-install reboot the computer in the Recovery Partition (Command + R) and install Mac OS.

Check your current version of El Capitan using «About This Mac» in the  menu (top-left of screen). It should show Version 10.11.6

Click on the version number to see the build. It should be 15G1611

If it’s older, such as 15G1011, it’s because you installed the defective version of El Capitan that was released 2017-09-25

Your screen shot shows an El Capitan install on 2017-10-06, so you probably have the bad version. That version will not do security updates, or the Safari 11 update. See if you still have the installer in you Applications folder. It is named «Install OS X El Capitan». Do a «Get Info» (⌘i) on it. The bad one is Version 1.7.55, created 2017-08-08.

The good one is version 1.7.50, created 2016-05-18

Look in the Purchased tab of the App Store app for the correct version of «OS X El Capitan», dated before 2017-09-25, and download and install it, You can then use the Updates section of the App Store to bring it up to date and install Safari 11. It make take more than one update. The install will not delete any of your files.
