Question: Q: samsung Ml 1520 and Lion

I have recently upgraded to lion MAc os X 10.7 and my samsung laser printer ML1520 will not print any more is anyone got it to work?

I have tried different drivers and gostprint but nothing seams to work before bying a new printer I would like to know if anyone has foud a solution

I could manage to print few pages from openoffice and from safari but could NOT print PDF files NOR files from iWorks. Do you know by any chance the reason?

Donatello, PDF files print correctly. you first thought that the error when printing — but the printer hummed and printed page PDF document is sent. iWork not tested — because they do not use it.

Printer Drivers for old models of Samsung, Xerox or Dell printers ( like Samsung ML-1520)

I’ve got a quite old Samsung printer, model ML-1520. I can not find any drivers for it. Samsung seems to have stopped supporting OS X, and Apple only offers drivers for models not older than ML-1630.

I’ve tried to install the drivers by Apple and setup my printer as 1630 and other models, but it doesn’t print.

Where can I find proper drivers?

_{(I’m writing both Q&A. For the purpose of search optimization I’ve added extra vendors in the header. My solution is applicable to all those vendors).}

First to do: check if your printer is supported by Apple. It was not true in my case, but may be true in yours.

There are at least two opensource driver packages, supporting the printers which are abandoned by their vendors:

SpliX.

a set of CUPS Printer drivers for SPL (Samsung Printer Language) printers. If you have a such printer, you need to download and use SpliX.

Personal experience

I first installed SpliX and it worked well with documents printed from MS Word or PDFs. But it failed with printing .jpg images from Preview app or command-line lpr utility. So I switched to Samsung-GDI, which handles .jpg well.

Also, if a printer is set up twice with different drivers it doesn’t work with any of them. So you should only have one printer in Settings > Printers (per each device). You can have both driver packs installed on your system, though.

I do not like doing upgrades

Especially operating system (OS) upgrades.

The reason, why I do not like them, is because usually after update something is not working as before or even not working at all.

The feature from software is changed, drivers not available anymore, software is not working with a new OS, sometimes new OS is slower than old one, etc.

The only reason why I do upgrade is if I have to (some feature is only working on new OS) or have new hardware (then anyway I need to install OS so I can try the last version).

Regularly I upgrade only iPhone and iPad because I do not use it for work, more for fun (if some software is not working anymore I can live without it).

I bought new SSD

For my 7 years old computer, I decided to upgrade my HDD to SDD because it was the bottleneck.

Upgrade will be done from OS X 10.9 to OS X 10.12.

At that time 10.13 was available as a beta.

But I will not use the beta if I do not have to.

When I did iPhone development with XCode I usually had to use newest OS X to have access to the last SDK.

Always test before upgrade

Luckily I have one Mac Mini, so I decided to do a test installation on it first.

So that I am sure that all software that I use is working fine before I upgrade my main computer.

The biggest problem I had with my Samsung ML-1520 laser printer.

I do remember that even on OS X 10.9 it was also not working by default, but with http://guigo.us/mac/splix/ I manage to have it working.

On OS X 10.12 http://guigo.us/mac/splix/ are still needed, but will not get the job done.

After 2 hours, I manage to have it working on OS X 10.12 (Mac OS Sierra) but it was not easy.

652 WLXKJ USB network server

I have Samsung ML-1520 connected to 652 WLXKJ USB network server so that I can share Samsung ML-1520 as a network printer.

For last 7 years, 652 WLXKJ is working with no problems.

There is no official support for it (I do not even know who made this thing), and you have to figure things on your own (like to add USB stick to it, if you want to use it as network print server).

Samsung ML-1520 on OS X 10.12 (Mac OS Sierra)

The only way how I have found that Samsung ML-1520 laser printer can work with OS X 10.12 (Mac OS Sierra), is to add a PPD (Postscript Printer Description) file manually but http://guigo.us/mac/splix/ must also be installed.

Luckily, PPD file is available at SpliX website, download the source code, unzip it, ml1520.ppd is inside splix-2.0.0/ppd .

There is also ml1520fr.ppd (French language) and ml1520pt.ppd (Portuguese Brazil language), .

After this printing of PDF and DOC documents did work (and I have only tested with PDF and DOC documents).

Steps for installing Samsung ML-1520 on OS X 10.12 (Mac OS Sierra)

Install Splix-2.0.0.mpkg

Splix-2.0.0.mpkg can be downloades from http://guigo.us/mac/splix/ as Splix-2.0.0.zip , unzip it and install it.

You will have the error message The installation failed but this is fine, you need to have, I know it is strange.

This is an important step, if you do to it, later when you install Samsung ML-1520 you will have The software for the printer was installed incorrectly. Please reinstall the software from the manufacturer error message and Samsung ML-1520 will not work.

Add ml1520pt.ppd Postscript Printer Description for Samsung ML-1520

Add Samsung ML-1520 in System Preference. inside Printers & Scanners
Most important is to in Use: select Other. and then Open file ml1520pt.ppd , remeber you need to download it from SpliX website.

Address: , Protocol and Queue: are specific in my setup because I am using it with 652 WLXKJ USB network server.

When all is finished, Samsung ML-1520 is working fine.

This is why I do not like upgrades.

Here is how I got my samsung ML-1520 to work.

Note: there are some steps I did that may not be really necessary. I indicated them with (?) at the end.

• Download and install Samsung Printer Drivers v3.92

• Download splix-2.0.0 from http://cl.ly/2A1A0c160P27/download/Splix-2.0.0.zip (This is an unofficial location, but the zip does not seem to exist anymore on the official site only a source tarball)
• Unzip Splix-2.0.0
• Copy pstoqpdl and rastertoqpdl from Splix-2.0.0.mpkg/Contents/Packages/target.pkg/Contents/usr/libexec/cups/filter to /Library/Printers/Samsung/UPD/Filters (I navigated there using Finder, you need to right click on some files and show contents)
• Copy ml1520.ppd from Splix-2.0.0.mpkg/Contents/Packages/target.pkg/Contents/usr/share/cups/model/samsung to «/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/Samsung ML-1520 Series»
• Make «Samsung ML-1520 Series» executable (?)
• Edit «Samsung ML-1520 Series

Change line *cupsFilter: «application/vnd.cups-raster 0 rastertoqpdl» to *cupsFilter: «application/vnd.cups-raster 0 /Library/Printers/Samsung/UPD/Filters/rastertoqpdl»

• gzip «Samsung ML-1520 Series»
• Make folder ML-1520 in /Library/Printers/Samsung (?)
• Copy contents of folder /Library/Printers/Samsung/ML-2160 to /Library/Printers/Samsung/ML-1520 (?)
• Rename /Library/Printers/Samsung/ML-1520/ML-2160.icns to ML-1520.icns (?)
• Plug in your printer
• Add printer and use driver «Samsung ML-1520, Splix V. 2.0.0»
• Now I was able to print!

Thanks Apple and HP for not supporting our printers.
