Where are Minecraft files stored?
There may be scenarios in which you would want to access your game files directly, such as to back up or transfer a world save, or to modify files. The following lists how to access your game files directly:
Minecraft: Java Edition
The file to run the launcher is wherever you put it. This may or may not default to your desktop or downloads folder. The remaining launcher files can be found by starting the launcher, logging in, going to «Launch options», choosing a launch configuration from the list («Latest release» is the default) and clicking the little green arrow to the right of the «Game directory» option.
Windows computers
Press Win+R, then type %appdata%\.minecraft, then press Ok.
OS X
In the Finder, from the Go menu, select ‘Go to Folder’, then type:
/Library/Application Support/minecraft, and click Go.
Linux

How to Find Minecraft Windows 10 Edition Save Location / Folder
Minecraft Windows 10 Edition saves all worlds in a single folder. Follow these steps to find Minecraft Windows 10 Edition save location.
Minecraft is one of those games where you can spend hours doing a wide range of things like building, enchanting, crafting, fighting, exploring, etc. There are a variety of Minecraft editions to play and Windows 10 edition is one of those. If you playing the Minecraft Windows 10 edition then it is important to know the default save location of Minecraft Windows 10 Edition.
Knowing the default save location lets you manually back up all Minecraft worlds as and when needed for safekeeping. After all, nobody wants to lose a Minecraft world they spent hours, days, months, and years in making.
Additionally, the same save location is used to install the behavior and resource packs. This means that knowing the save location allows you to manually add custom made or downloaded resource and behavior packs to Minecraft.
Where are Minecraft Windows 10 Edition Save Files Located?
The Minecraft Windows 10 edition save folder is located here:
%LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds
Unlike the regular Java edition, Minecraft Windows 10 edition is a store game. Which means that it has limited access to the Windows file system. As such, the default save location of Minecraft Windows 10 edition is different from the Java edition.
Like any store app, Minecraft Windows 10 edition stores the save data in its own folder inside the AppData folder.
Quick Steps
- Press Win + R.
- Copy and paste “%LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds” in the blank field.
- Click “Ok” or press “Enter“.
- As soon as you press Enter, the Minecraft Windows 10 save folder will be opened in the File Explorer.
Steps to Find Minecraft Save Location in Windows 10
1. First, press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
2. In the blank field, enter the below path and click on the “Ok” button.
3. The above action will open the MinecraftWorlds folder located inside the AppData folder. In this directory, you will see one or more folders with random names. The number of folders will depend on the number of Minecraft worlds you have.
For example, I have three worlds in Minecraft Windows 10 edition so there are three different folders corresponding to each world. Put simply, every Minecraft world is saved in its own folder.
4. To know which folder belongs to which Minecraft world, simply open the folder of your choice and double-click on the levelname.txt file.
5. As soon as you double-click, the file will be opened in a text editor like Notepad. In there, you will see the name of the Minecraft world.
Once you’ve identified the world, you can back up the entire world by simply copying the root folder. If you want to, you can add resource packs in the resouce_packs folder and behavior packs in behavior_packs folders.
Wrapping Up
That is all. It is easy to find Minecraft Windows 10 edition save location in Windows 10. Though finding the save folder is pretty easy and straightforward, you cannot change the default save folder of Windows 10 Minecraft. Mainly because it is a UWP app and has limited access to the Windows File System. That being said, as long as you remember where you can find the save folder, it shouldn’t be a problem.
I hope that helps. If you are stuck or need some help, comment below and I will try to help as much as possible. If you like this article, do check out how to automatically backup Minecraft worlds to OneDrive.

Looking to put some of my old Java saves in the Win 10 Edition, can I drop them in the saves folder?
Also, where does Win 10 Edition save files?

You cannot transfer saves from the PC Edition to the Windows 10 Edition. They are both separate games, Windows 10 Edition is essentially MCPE.
In any case, save files for the Windows 10 Edition are stored here,

Anyone know if there is a way to change the default save directory?
For example, I’d like them to reside on a folder in my Onedrive so that I can access the same saves from multiple Windows 10 machines and have them synced for me. Is this possible (yet)?

There is not. You can make use of symbolic links instead, that’s assuming your cloud service allows them.
I’m not sure if OneDrive supports it, but you can refer to this for information on setting up a symlink: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/
I’ll see if I can make a better guide.

So to be clear, I should be cut-pasting the minecraftWorlds folder from its appData location into Onedrive or wherever, then Right click -> Pick link source, and then create a hard link clone in the com.mojang folder where it used to be, correct?
I did this (and tried others when it didn’t work), and while I could open the hard link and see the world folder, minecraft did not show the world when it loaded. On top of that, when I created a new world, it somehow showed up when opening the hard link, but not when I manually browsed to the folder it was supposedly linked to.
I couldn’t get it to work using any of the other link types, either. Could be that Onedrive doesn’t support them, but I feel like it should work considering all of the Onedrive files are local on my machine, and the only thing the Onedrive program does is detect and auto-upload/download new files or changes.
Minecraft Save Files Location in Windows & Mac
Do you want to backup your Minecraft save files? If so, you need to know the save file location. Here’s how to create a quick backup of all your save files!
Windows Save Files Location:
The save files are all stored in the .minecraft folder:
- Hidden folder located at C:\Users\[yourusernamehere]\AppData\Roaming\.
So all you have to do is go to that location and copy the entire folder to create a backup of your save files and all other minecraft files (e.g. skins, textures, etc.)
1. Step In order to see the Minecraft folder you have to make sure that you can see hiden folders. If you don’t know how to do that, click here: Unhide hidden folders
2. Step Next, we open the Windows Explorer (Windows key + E). Then navigate to C:\Users\[yourusernamehere]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft (if you can’t see the folder AppData, repeat step 1)
Let’s take a look at the content of the minecraft folder:
The Minecraft folder includes 3 subfolders, bin, resources and saves. The saves folder obviously contains your save files.
3. Step Select the saves folder and copy the saves folder via CTRL + C and paste it anywhere else on your hard drive via CTRL + V.
Minecraft Save Files Manager
If you are on Windows, you can also use this handy tool to manage your save files. Because the save files are kinda important (they’re your worlds after all!) in Minecraft, this could be really handy to have!
Head over to http://sourceforge.net/projects/minecraftsavmgr/ to download the Minecraft save manager
Mac & Linux Save Files Location
Are you on a Mac or Linux? If so, the save file location will be different.
Mac Save Files: Stored in
” = username)
Linux Save Files: Stored in – to be added – (enter locate .minecraft into shell and you should find them)
Minecraft Files and Save Folder Location
There are many reasons you would need the Minecraft files and save folder location. Maybe you want to backup your save files and your worlds, you might want to install some mods or resource packs or you want to find the screenshots you have been taking of your creations. Below is a description of how to find your Minecraft folder.
How to find the Minecraft files and save folder location in Windows 7:
There is now an easier way to find the .minecraft folder if you’ve already run Minecraft on your machine:
Step 1: Start up Minecraft
Step 2: Select «Options» from the main menu
Step 3: Select «Resources Packs»
Step 3: Now select «Open Resource Pack Folder»
Step 4: Then go up one level to get to the .minecraft folder (click .minecraft at the top)
(This has been updated for Minecraft 1.7.9+. If you’re using an older version, instead of resource packs look for Texture Packs on the main Minecraft menu.)
Manually finding the .minecraft folder: Here is another way. (Note: For some people, you may have to turn on the ability to see hidden folders on your windows instillation). To do that:
- Click Start.
- Control Panel.
- Select Appearance and Personalization.
- Click Folder Options
- Go to the View tab.
- Check Hidden Files and Folders: Show all files and folders.
Now to find the Minecraft files and save folder location:
- Click Start and in the little search box type in %appdata% and hit enter.
- At the top you should see the .Minecraft folder.
Or for the actual location: C:\Users\[yourusernamehere]\AppData\Roaming\.
MAC Minecraft Folder Location: /users//library/application support/minecraft
Linux Minecraft Folder Location: /home/[username]/.minecraft (enter locate .minecraft into shell and you should find them)
Backing up your Minecraft world saves: If you want to back up your save files, just go into the Minecraft folder, then the saves folder and right click on the folder name of the world you want to backup. Copy it, and then paste it to a folder of your choice for later use. Having backup saves of your world is very useful because in Minecraft you never know what will go wrong.
There are even times where your world could get erased because of a crash. Or, you could be carrying 300 iron, 30 diamond, full diamond gear, and take a wrong step into lava because you were too busy starting at the TV. With a backup folder, even though it would be a little cheap, you can recover your stuff. Everyone makes mistakes. Of course abusing this would make the game less fun, but there will always be those times you wish you had a backup save.
Note that making backup saves when using mods is very important. Mods can cause issues with Minecraft and your world saves are even more prone to corruption.
