Scan hardware changes windows

Scan for recent hardware changes,Scanning might not find new devices attached to your computer and install them. in windows 7 home premium

Hi George,

1. Does a hardware device connect in other computers?

2. Were there any recent changes made on the computer prior to the issue?

Please follow the links and steps:

Method 1: Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.

Alternatively you can try the fix it mentioned below and check.

For more information, refer the link:

Note: It applies to Windows 7 as well.

Use Device Manager to scan for hardware changes

Use Device Manager to scan for hardware changes. After your computer scans for hardware changes, it might recognize the USB device that is connected to the USB port so that you can use the device.

To scan for hardware changes, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and type devmgmt.msc in the Start Search box and hit enter.
  2. Device Manager opens.
  3. In Device Manager, click your computer so that it is highlighted.
  4. Click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
  5. Check the USB device to see whether it is working.

Uninstall and reinstall USB drivers.

You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

a. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

b. Click System and Maintenance, click System, and then click Device Manager.

Note: If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-click System, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

c. In Device Manager, double click to expand «Universal Serial Bus controllers«, right click on the Host Controller, click «Uninstall» and click «OK«.
Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.

d. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under «Universal Serial Bus controllers».

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

Note: Connect the USB devices to the Computer only after the conflict drivers are uninstalled and once the Computer is restarted.

If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update.

Stuck on «Scan for Hardware Changes»

I’ve reviewed the system specifications and it looks like your computer’s model is a Lenovo Flex 3-1480 and Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

Based on the information provided, I can recommend that the following tasks should be done (in this order):

Troubleshoot Network Connection

  1. Right-click on the WiFi icon in the taskbar and select Troubleshoot problems.
  2. Wait for the troubleshooter to finish and any errors should be detected. Windows can fix some errors.
  3. Continue to the next method if this didn’t work.

Clean Installing Drivers

  1. Disable automatic driver installations (select No, let me choose what to do; select Never install driver software from Windows Update; uncheck Automatically get the device app and info provided by your device manufacturer). Save your changes.
  2. Go to device manager and Show hidden devices (under View). Under Network adapters, right click and select Uninstall on each driver.
  3. Visit this link to download official drivers.
  4. Restart computer if prompted.
  5. For component: Networking: Wireless LAN ; Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit .
  6. Download the drivers.
  7. Re-enable automatic driver installations (as I explained in my previous post).
  8. In device manager, select Network adapters.
  9. Right-click and select Scan for hardware changes.
  10. Wait for any drivers to be reinstalled.
  11. Continue to the next method if this didn’t work.

It is Dell Alienware 17 R5 2014.

By reinstalling «graphic card» driver, do you mean the Intel one or the NVIDIA one?

I have exactly the same problem.

Initially I thought it was skype related as it always occurred during skype video calls.

As I went to all procedures described in the thread (manufacturers site to update drivers). I even upgraded my BIOS.
I also performed a sfc/scannow for corrupt system files from elevated command prompt.

All was working from last wednesday until yesterday.

I now suspect the problem is related to the inbuilt webcam. The drivers are from microsoft and from. 2006 and the system reports it as updated and the latest release.

Today, as I barely touched «scan for hardware changes» I immediately got the BSOD and the VIDEO DXGKRNL FATAL ERROR.

I honestly have reached my limit, knowledge wise and was not expecting to buy a new computer.
I have a Dell Inspiron 16GB ram Intel i7

Windows 10 does not automatically scan for hardware changes when I plug in any USB device.

When first installing Win 10, I had no issues regarding automatically detecting USB devices being plugged in. All of the sudden when trying to play a game with a wired Xbox 360 controller or plugging in a USB thumb drive, the lights flash for a split second and then go dark. No sound from windows indicating a device being plugged in and it doesn’t show up on device manager. It still detects immediately when a USB device has been removed. As soon as I manually click «scan for hardware changes» it works just fine. If I unplug and plug it back in afterward, then I have to manually scan again.

Note: all of my device drivers seem to be up to date, and the devices work as expected after manually scanning.

Is there a service or something that needs to be started in order detect these hardware changes automatically? Maybe a registry key I need to add or modify?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

This issue can be caused if any of the following situations exist:

The currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupt

Windows 8 freezes when running «Scan for hardware changes» in Device Manager, requiring forced shutdown

I’ve just installed Windows 8 Pro on a system that ran Windows 7 w/o issue. After completing a clean Windows 8 Pro setup, I went trough installing drivers, but found that the installer package for my sound card drivers caused Windows 8 Pro to lock up and become completely unresponsive. I had to force a shutdown by pressing the power button for 4 seconds.

In troubleshooting the issue, I found that manually installing the drivers via device manager caused no problems. Also, installing the drivers available through Windows Update also worked w/o issue. However both of these methods fail to install parts of the driver that the drive package include. I then went to uninstall the device the driver package again. I uninstalled the Sound Card via Device Manager and selected «Delete the driver software for this device.» When I followed this with a «Scan for Hardware Changes» to re-list my sound card, I found that Windows 8 hung again.

After trying other possible solutions with no resolution, I tried re-installing Windows 8 fresh. To rule out a possible problem with Windows 8, I opened Device manager as soon as I was able after Windows setup and ran «Scan for hardware changes». Again Windows 8 freezes. I cannot place fault on any post setup software or driver. This appears to be an issue with Windows 8 itself.

One final note, occasionally «Scan for hardware changes» will actually work, but most often it causes the system to hang.

Is anyone else having this issue? Can anyone provide assistance? (specs below for comparison)
