How to prevent Windows 10 screen display from turning off

You might have seen that the screen display turns off automatically when you leave your PC idle for a certain period of time. This function is very helpful to increase the device’s battery life and to some extent, it even prolongs the screen life. However not every person likes this feature. Many people prefer to keep the screen from turning off regardless of whether they actively use their computer or not. On Windows 10, there are multiple ways using which you can prevent your screen display from turning off.

Prevent Windows 10 screen display from turning off

To keep your screen from turning off on a Windows 10 computer, you may use one of these options:

1. Through Settings app
2. By using Command Prompt
3. Through the Control Panel

Let’s see all these methods in details:

1] Through the Settings app

If you want to prevent the screen display from turning off, you need to perform some changes in the Settings app:

1. Open the Windows Settings using Win+I keyboard shortcut and then head to the System > Power & sleep.
2. Move to the right pane and locate the Screen section. Then click on the drop-down menu and set “On battery power, turn off after” as Never.
3. Similarly, click on the drop-down menu and set “When plugged in, turn off after” as Never.
4. After following the above steps, your computer screen display will not turn off automatically.

2] By using Command Prompt

You can also keep your screen from turning off by running a simple command in Command Prompt. To do so, open the Run dialog box using the Win+R keyboard shortcut.

In the text field, type Ctrl+Shift+Enter keys to open Command Prompt with admin privileges. Click on the Yes button if UAC popup on your computer screen.

In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:

Press the Enter key to set timeout setting to never

Furthermore, you can also set your screen timeout settings to never when your PC is running on battery. To do this, type the following command and hit enter to run it:

After running the above commands, it will set your screen timeout setting to never turn off.

3] Through the Control Panel

The next option is the control panel using which you can prevent your Windows 10 screen display from turning off. So let’s see how to do this:

Go to the upper right corner of the screen and make sure the View by option is set to Category.

Now go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.

From the left pane, click the link named Choose when to turn off the display.

In the Edit Plan Settings window, set the “Turn off the display” option to Never using the drop-down menu for both On battery and Plugged in.

Here please note that the “On Battery” option is only available for the laptop computer.

Follow these steps and check the status.

— Access “Control Panel” and click on “Power Options”.

— Click on “change plan settings”.

Set “never” for “put the computer to sleep”. This will ensure that the computer does not go to sleep mode.

Select couple of minutes for this option “turn off the display”. When you select 1 or 2 minutes for the turn off display, the battery power consumption is also reduced.

Once this is done save the settings and check if this helps.

For anyone with this problem

after a few days and hours of trying and searching, i found a solution though linustechtips forum.

It seems that its something USB related/connected.

someone on Linus forums said that after unplugging his joystick, the timeout for his screens started working again.

so i unplugged my Xbox controller and within 1min. my screens went off as they should 🙂

so i guess that something is not working as it should in windows, and the reason for only a few having this problem is that they are using some sort of joystick/controller and it keep windows ‘Active’ somehow

Date-8-14-2015 after a few hours of looking around and trial and error. Found this on razer site. If you do have a game controller of any type including game pads windows ten has a issue with them. So far this has worked the best for me. Razer orbweaver stealth was not letting my pc sleep, screen saver and screen timer work. Hope this helps..

Since I started using Windows 10 my computer will not go into sleep mode and my screen saver mode will not come on.

This happens due to a compatibility issues between Joystick devices and Windows 10. To avoid this please disable the game controller device under Device Manager >> Human Interface Device >> HID-compliant Game Controller. However, do note that when you disable the game controller, you might lose virtual joystick related features in Synapse.

Same here, with Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick. Installing the most recent drivers, from the manufacturer’s site, did no good obviously, since multiple brands of joysticks and controllers, and thus drivers, are exhibiting the same problem.

On a side note, I noticed that when rebooting with the joystick plugged in, the OS refuses to see the joystick. Go into Control Panel, and it is not in the Devices lineup. Triggering the search for new hardware will not find it. You must unplug the joystick, and then plug it back in again, to get the OS to register its presence.

My point being that while plugged in, in either state (recognized by the OS or not), it causes the monitor to never go into sleep mode, and the system will never go into hibernate mode. Unplug the joystick, and leave it that way, and all is good (even without a reboot), with sleep & hibernate.

Desktop computers usually come with a dedicated button to turn off or on the screen/display. The dedicated screen on or off button helps you save a lot of power as the display is the most power consuming component of a computer.

Turn off Windows 10 laptop screen using power button

By default settings, pressing the power button on your laptop shuts down your computer. You can configure Windows 10 to turn off laptop screen (without putting into sleep mode) when you press the power button. Here is how to do that:

Step 1: Open Settings app. Navigate to System > Power & sleep.

Step 2: In the Related settings section, click Additional power settings link to open Power Options window.

Step 3: Here, in the left-pane, click Choose what the powers do link. This action will open System Settings window.

Step 4: In the Power and sleep buttons and lid settings section, you can configure what Windows 10 should do when you press the power button. Next to When I press the power button option, select Turn off the display for both on battery and plugged in.

Finally, click Save changes button. That’s all! From now on, whenever you want to turn off laptop display, simply press the power button on the laptop once. To turn on the display again, press the power button again.

To force shut down or turn off your computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until your computer is turned off.

Turn off laptop screen with Turn off Screen script

Turn off Screen is a script file available for download from Microsoft TechNet repository. The Turn off Screen bat file turns off the screen.

After downloading Turn off Screen bat file, simply double-click on the bat file to turn off the laptop screen. When you double-click on the bat file, you will see a Command Prompt window for a few seconds before the display goes off.

You can pin the Turn off Screen bat file to the taskbar, start menu, or save it on the desktop for quick access.
