[HOWTO] Install Serious Sam : The First Encounter
How-To Install Serious Sam : The First Encounter on Ubuntu 7.10
This tutorial will help you to install Serious Sam : The First Encounter on Ubuntu 7.10, not using the standard Wine way (which doesnt really work very well)
One — Downloading the custom installer
Firstly you need to go to http://www.liflg.org/?catid=6&gameid=71 and grab the Loki custom installer for Serious Sam. Download the file to your desktop either through bit-torrent or through a direct download (I used the direct download, so i dont know how many seeders the torrent has). Once you download the file, move it to your home directory if it isnt already there.
Two — Preparing for the installation
Now it is time to dig out your Serious Sam disk. Load it into your CD drive and mount it if it doesnt automatically. Then open up your terminal and type:
This should load up the Serious Sam installer. If it doesnt make sure you set the permissions correctly and try again.
Three — Installing the game
Once the installer has loaded it is a simple point and click interface. Remember where you install the game (A directory within your home directory is recommended (i used
/bin/serioussam)), and make sure you tick the «Put symlink in Home directory box», to make things simpler later. The game should now be installed but dont run it just yet! Just one more thing to do.
Four — Creating launcher script
The final job is to create a simple bash script so you can launch sam just by typing serioussam into your terminal. For this you need to be able to use sudo so make sure you have sufficient privileges to use it. Once you are sure you can use sudo open your terminal and type:
Once gedit has opened type:
Save the file and go back into your terminal and type:
Serious Sam : The First Encounter should now load and run.
**If there are any problems with the bash scripts above please tell me**

Why do you believe a serioussam script needs to be created? Have you ever used a gamepad in this game? Why does the game only take a square portion of the center of the screen surrounded by black? I guess Linux just isn’t much of a gaming os, and I’ll have to use wintendo. @$%@#$%^

Re: [HOWTO] Install Serious Sam : The First Encounter
1) A script has to be created so that the game appears in the applications menu.
2) I have not.
3) Because the Resolution is set lower than your monitor’s resolution.
4) Get more games to come to Linux and it will become a better gaming OS.
Re: [HOWTO] Install Serious Sam : The First Encounter
Just typing ssamtfe would start the game for me. Maybe /usr/local/bin is not in your path, and you should add it there. I can tell you how if you need help doing that. Even if you did not correct your bash, the script is not needed. You could simply put this as the command in your applications menu
I got the game for the split screen multiplayer. It took me a while, but I finally got it working in 64 bit. Actually there is a hack to get Serious Sam 2 working in 64 bit Linux. No one knew the solution to this. I saw several people on the gentoo forums with the same problem. I spoke directly to the developer of the problem. He was not aware of the problem. He gave me a solution to the problem. He couldn’t test it out himself because he was away from his office, so I tried it, and it worked. I’ll make a how to and post it up on the forums. If anyone has an account to the gentoo forums, he or she should link them to the how to.
Do you know of any other games that allow 2 or more people to play from the same computer?
Have you or do you know how to get a gamepad working with Serious Same FE?

Serious sam  linux
Great question. There is only a Windows icon right now. Croteam supports Linux for other games, and has been really focused on Linux in the past, so I was shocked to find out this didn’t have day one Linux support.
Any news from Croteam about when the Linux support was coming?
package for linux supposedly exists, same with osx and VR versions https://steamdb.info/app/257420/depots/ but it’s not advertised on store page and probably won’t download it?
Empty depots, not even any private branches have files, so probably leftovers from ealier development 🙁
> Croteam games have a good Linux support
That’s but a lie, their support was bad at best and horrible most of the times.
Seriously, the same games on the same hardware manage to produce 60-80% less FPS just because it was built for a different target?
Croatian software development skills seems to suck a lot.

Sorry but I got the same amount of FPS while playing on Vulkan, both on Windows and Linux. When it comes to Linux gaming, there is a lot of variables involved, like drivers. Have sure to install ALL games in a EXT4 partition, because ntfs-3g driver has a really big performance hit.
You can tune your distro to improve the performance by reading this:

Go to liflg.org and download Installer, extract.
Download zipped archive from HumbleBundle and extract.
Copy files from Installer folder to Game folder.
Done.
Why isn’t this available on steam? It makes no sense whatsoever. Also, the binary should be recompiled so as to play nice with pulseaudio because the latency is horrible with the current one.
Here is the old linux installer: http://liflg.org/?catid=6&gameid=71
Still: how to get the windows files with steam because you can’t load a windows-only game from within linux…
Go to liflg.org and download Installer, extract.
Download zipped archive from HumbleBundle and extract.
Copy files from Installer folder to Game folder.
Done.

- You can get the Windows files by various ways:
— Humble Bundle: Zip file; no problem whatsoever.
— Steam: Install the Windows version of Steam via PlayOnLinux.
— Steam: Use SteamCMD; https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/2uvj4p/linuxgamingprotip_use_steamcmd_download_steam/
Extraction code for old Linux installer;
The First Encounter:
The only files that you need from the extracted Linux installer are binaries from bins.tar.bz2 file. Copy all of them to Bin folder of the game.
Install osspd-pulseaudio package from Synaptic or Software Center etc. in order to avoid sound delays.
You are good to go.

Serious Sam 4 Linux DXVK Wine
Serious Sam 4 Linux DXVK Wine – how to play this game on Linux.
Humanity is under siege as the full force of Mental’s hordes spread across the world, ravaging what remains of a broken and beaten civilization. The last remaining resistance to the invasion is the Earth Defence Force led by Sam “Serious” Stone and his heavily-armed squad of misfit commandos.
Croteam returns with a high-powered prequel to the Serious Sam series that scales up chaos to unprecedented levels. The classic Serious Sam formula is revamped by putting an unstoppable arsenal up against an unimaginable number of enemies that requires players to circle-strafe and backpedal-blast their way out of impossible situations.
Serious Sam 4 Linux DXVK Wine – how to play this game on Linux.
The guys from Croteam disapointed Linux gamers for Serious Sam 4 isn’t available for this operation system this time. All Serious Sam games have Linux version but Seriuos Sam 4. However, you can play it on Linux with some tweaking. let’s start.
For this game you’ll need a particular Proton version, DXVK, some config files editing and file and folders creating.
The first step is to download Proton. You’ll need Proton 4.14 GE 2 which you can download from GloriousEggroll’s GitHub page here. There are reports the game is running fine with Proton 4.15 GE 1 too and you can try it.
If you are using the Steam version of the game, create a
/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d directory if it does not exist and extract the archive in compatibilitytools.d/ folder. Restart Steam and enable proton-ge-custom.
If you are using the GOG version, you have to extract the archive and use the dist folder where you’ll find bin, lib, lib64 and share folders. You should point to Proton and should export the wine prefix where you are installed the game:
You can create a script:
#!/bin/sh
export WINEPREFIX=»/path/to/the/prefix/
/path/to/proton/bin/wine/ /path/to/the/game/game/exe
Now you can start the game with double click. But hold for now.
The next step is to install DXVK. If you don’t know how, you can learn from our easy DXVK installation tutorial.
d3dcompiler_47 is also needed for Direct3D11 or Direct3D12 modes. You can install it via:
Now enter the game’s root folder (where’s the game exe) and create folder UserData and put there a minimal configuration file UserData/SeriousSam4.ini with the following content:
gfx_strAPI = «Direct3D11»;
sfx_strAPI = «OpenAL»;
If you are using the Steam version, there’s no need to create SeriousSam4.ini. You can find the file in:
Note*
When you start the game for the first time, this file will be populated with all the needed settings. Later you can change gfx_strAPI = „Direct3D11“; to gfx_strAPI = „Vulkan“; but be advised – there will be artefacts and graphical glitches.
Update:
Now you can use the latest Wine and Proton with this option:
It fixes the flickering.
In the game’s root you’ll find a file named UserCfg.lua. Delete it’s content and put the following:
gfx_strAPI = «Direct3D12»;
sfx_strAPI = «OpenAL»;gfx_strAPI = «Direct3D12»;
sfx_strAPI = «OpenAL»;
Now go to:
/Content/SeriousSam4/Config/
and edit CheckDriver.lua with the following content.
You can also use ESync for a FPS boost.
You are ready! Now you can play Serious Sam 4 on Linux. Enjoy!
- Wine version used in the video: Proton 4.14 GE 2 with ESync enabled.
- DXVK version: 1.7.1
